Samsung Galaxy S3 charging issue

I use the 2A Note2 charger.
It seems fine.
A lot of people have problems with USB cables.
Genuine Blackberry cables are cheap on Ebay and well built.

If you are trying to charge from USB 2.0, the standards are for only 500mA, so you will be trying to charge at a 1/4 of the $10 Note2 chargers output.

MY S3 also has the same problem. Bought in Dec 2012. Problem appeared in March 2013. Went to Samsung service center, they replaced the whole charger(adapter + data cable) and said phone is alright. Developed the problem again in July 2013. Now the service center says to pay money to the charger as Samsung gives only first 6months warranty and mine was in 7month. Everyday I charge my mobile with somebody else phone charger (Note 2,Grand,HTC). Other charger works great. In 2-3 hours the phone is 100% charged.
Really frustrated. S3 is great but charger really sucks.

Sometimes I think to buy a new phone but then if so much expensive S3 works like this then how can I trust any other costly smartphone!! :-\

Have you even bothered to read any of the 59 posts above yours? Apparently not, or you'd know the problem is most likely the cheap USB cable, which can be easily replace for $10 or less locally, or for a couple of bucks mail order.

After somewhat happily owning my S3, a few days ago, my phone is no longer charging. I did some troubleshooting (e.g. different battery) and it's likely that it's the microusb port that's the problem. I brought it to the AT&T store, and the associate tried another charger. Fortunately, despite my phone being out of warrantly, AT&T is nice enough to send me a replacement. However, I am concerned that this may happen again. It's got me thinking of selling the phone, as it looks like this is a known problem. I know that I can buy an external battery charger, but it would be a pain in the a. With the announcement that AT&T will be selling the Lumia 520, I've been thinking of buying this as a backup, selling my S3 and buying some other Android phone (?? Moto X, S4, or other).

The actual item listing for the Samsung Note2 charger I bought was taken down by the seller and relisted @ $90.95.
Samsung Universal 2Amp Travel Charger Adapter Detachable Micro USB Cable White | eBay
I don't know that it is Genuine, (it was listed originally at $10.95) but it does put out a stable (measured) 2A and seems very high quality.

You know the Ebay game...
Always find a new listing, By It Now, Free Shipping, 99.6% or better seller rating, with thousands of items sold.
People that misrepresent and sell shoddy merchandise don't last long.

The cable was much the same.
Bulk packaging. The right labels. High Quality judging from the moulding/finish, and plastic stickers/wrapping.

You're plugging this in at least twice a day.
Maybe careful, maybe not.
Surely the plug gets bumped once in a while. It is only soldered to the board.
My micro USB has had a silicone plug in it for the last few days, and I intend to use it only for flashing the phone.

Hopefully, wireless charging FTW.

Is trying a different battery all the troubleshooting you've done? If so, you certainly can't say the problem is the USB port. Try a different USB cable, and a different charger first. And yes, while there have been some USB port failures, you need to remember Samsung has sold more than 40 million of these. There are probably thousands of SG3 owners on this forum, and very few people have this issue. Finally, every Android phone sold today uses a micro-USB port, and I suspect a small percentage of these fail with every phone.

Thanks for the suggestion, but in my message, I mentioned that the AT&T associate tried another charger (with a different USB cable), and the phone still would not charge.

You might try Qi (or TouchStone) charging.
The contacts are internal... beside the battery.
I have been doing this for a few days since I got the parts.

It seems to charge quickly and avoids the USB plug altogether.
It's not a pain at all.
Infact it is really simple and convenient to just drop the phone onto the dock.

The only issue I have is that when it reaches 100% the phone will then beep-boop as it cycles on and off. 99%, 100%, 99%, 100%

I've tried one of the Bravolink tags currently available from Amazon for my S3 and although it works well, it seems to interfere with my PayPass/Wallet functioning, because it sticks directly to the battery where the NFC antenna is.

This wasn't working out for me, so I bought a Pixi back and a spare S3 battery cover.
(placing the Touchstone antenna way down towards the bottom of my phone)

It's been about a week now and seems to be working as expected.

To be precise, you didn't mention that he tried a different USB cable in your first post.

Again, thanks, but I did say the associate tried another charger ( which means that a different USB cable was used than mine). Yes, I didn't do it personally, but I didn't have a spare charger or mini usb cable, and brought the phone there specifically to the AT&T store to rule out that the USB cable as a possible cause.

Guys, same problem applied to my S3 and by the time I was thinking I had been the only one who had faced it.
First of all, phone was working fine for roundabout 4, maybe five months.
After that period I realized that they were significant drops in battery level, and everything seemed to be an issue associated with software.
First thing that was broken was connection between phone and PC via USB. I have tried going back for the factory settings then upgrading the device, then I have even managed to do the format. Nothing happened and that resulted in USB cable change and adapt it from previous phone (Wave533). Everything was working fine for a couple of days, then connection with this cable was broken as well.
After next days I realized phone is not going to recharge completely and I had an OEM charger for S3 along with the older charger from Wave. Tried the second one, no result.
When I arrived at an oil rig, this phone has not been charging at all. Maybe the environmental conditions did damage to socket or battery itself (had been very, very damp everywhere). Once the battery level has come down to critical, device has automatically switched off and the only one thing I can do right now is to check the other battery and if it's not a reason, then the last line of defence will be service.
Now I'm waiting for the delivery of a new battery, same as per OEM spec and will let you know if it solved that problem or the problem persists, but concerns anything else (the last hardware thing I am wondering about may be just micro-usb SOCKET).

Coz you remember all the older phones, that prior to some directives have been built by manufacturers either with separate socket for charger or separate for USB connection. Ca. 1.5 year ago the micro-USB was chosen as a standard socket for both of them. Everyone uses same socket up to a couple of times a day.

PS. I dug up an old Wave and if the OS is in idle although the battery is more than 2 years old - it lasts for longer than 6 days, ridiculous, isn't it? :p

I even tried charges other than the one came with s3, the issue was the same. so it doesent seems the issue of charger, its more software related, n samsung must provide some solution to this.

I think it is the cable system for I'm not the only one that has the same problem my nephew's friend has the same phone as mine S3 32GB bad charging system my nephew got HTC one hour complete charge his other friend MY TOUCH phone one hour complete charge all Android I have iPhone 4 32GB also complete charge one hour. That is not all on my iPhone I got 34K photos plus 18 app 15GB used my S3 8K photos on Screen shot and down load plus 20 apps 11GB used to many GB for so little photo and apps in phone

Fretech:

If the problem is, in fact, the micro-USB port, and your phone is no longer under warranty, you might consider this as a solution:

Amazon.com: Boho Tronics ? Set of 2x (two) 2300 mAh Batteries Now With NFC! (Supports Google Wallet) & 1 wall travel USB Charger - Compatible with Galaxy SIII S3 i9300: Cell Phones & Accessories

Keep multiple batteries charged (with the external charger), and swap during the day as necessary, then recharge when you're at someplace with AC power.

Mohk:

While there are certainly many software issues that cause excessive battery drain, I have yet to see any evidence or examples where a software problem prevents the phone from charging. That is, from what I've seen here and on other forums, invariably a hardware issue. Most often it's a bad USB cable or charge, but sometimes a bad USB port or battery.

I seldom contradict Meyer ;) but if the microUSB port is the problem I'd vote for a wireless charging solution rather than fiddling with swapping batteries - but that's just me.

That option would work, too, but I think it's probably quite a bit more expensive (and sometimes I'm a cheapskate!). You pays your money and makes your choices, so do whichever you think works better for you.

You can buy a Touchstone dock for $9.95 and a compatible charging back for $30. (or hack a $3.95 Pixi one)
That's about 5x as expensive as your $8 batteries, but it does make it easy to charge and avoids both the USB port and having to constantly pop off the battery door.
