Samsung Galaxy S3 charging issue

Make sure you are using the right charger. Do not use any other charger from other devices. That's a big one.

It's also wrong. All micro USB chargers put out 5 volts. As long as you use one that puts out at least as much power as the OEM (700 mA) I think, it will be fine.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3 mini charging issue

I just started using this phone out of the box, bought off the Internet. Everything went well until it needed charging. I was told to allow the phone to discharge completely for the first time and then charge, however when I tried charging the signal that comes on to say it is charging would not come on at all. I am currently using the data cable in the computer hoping that it would charge this way but i don't think this is working or if so very slowly. The phone is currently off and the battery signal that comes on is a thin line of green. I am not the a techy person but I have a samsung Tab 2 and have not had any issues with it, so i felt this was the next logical choice in phone, hope i did not make a mistake.

Susan,
You should use the wall charger rather than connecting the phone to a computer - the wall charger puts out more current, which will cause the phone to charge quicker.
Did you purchase a new phone or a used one?
If the wall charger doesn't work correctly (it should only take about 2 hours to charge fully, particularly with the phone completely off) then you can try using the charger/cable from your Tab - all of these micro-USB chargers should work at a basic level, although some may put out more current than others.

The USB 2.0 standard is 500mA.
I use a dedicated 2A Samsung charger intended for a tablet.
Actual readings show it does charge my GSIII at 1.9~A

All things equal -using a USB from computer, or one that follows this standard-... it will take almost 4x as long to charge as it will using a dedicated charger that has the data pins shorted together.

But the point was to help eliminate what the problem was. If a PC charged it, that shows the cable and USB port on the phone are fine.

I had the exact same problem yesterday. Only had the phone for ONE WEEK. It worked flawlessly until yesterday morning. It was at 100% charged when I went to bed (10 pm) Saturday night. Got up 4 a.m. Sunday morning, it was DEAD. Tried charging for a couple of hours...nothing. And couldn't boot up to retrieve messages, etc. It would stay stuck on the "Samsung" screen. I tried a different charger, I tried charging via usb to computer, via plug to outlet, nothing worked. Then it got stuck on "boot loop"--it would stick on the "Samsung" screen but now when I tried to turn it off, it would automatically reboot by itself (but still just stick on the Samsung screen). By the time I got to Best Buy, the phone was really hot! They wound up replacing the phone altogether. I guess it's lucky it happened within the 15-day return period, but I really hope it doesn't happen again!

hey buddy,

thanks for reply. if phone is on with screen switched on or off, it does not charge at all, it only charges if phone is completely off. I bought new battery "Swees? 3100mAh High Capacity Battery for Samsung Galaxy Note i9220/ N7000" of amazon. it is a strong one really.
however i found some reviews about replacement usb ports not doing the job and even makes more probs. so I suspect my "bargain one " too. I bought today another one hopefully it will finally resolve all of our problems..I`ll get back.

hi guys ive got the same problem, just been on the phone to orange and told them and from talking to them and others its a common problem in the s3 my phones 10 months old and lost charge today just went dead, 3 different leads and chargers and not a hope, also its not been the best at working lately, wont send text and cant always receive them, spoke to orange and they said its sounds like a phone issue not network as others on the same network is all ok.
hmmmmmmmmmmmm so im phone less for a night :(

Hi Guys! I bought my Galaxy S3 on Amazon from a retailer that had thousands of sales and plenty of positive reviews. in about a month I started having charging problems with it. It would charge very slowly. If I was using it while charging it wouldnt charge, on the contrary it would keep draining the battery. The weird thing that in some plugs it wouldnt charge at all while in others it would get 10 % in 5 minutes. My original charger that came with the phone became very slow and I just replaced it with a usb cord from some other samsung device. After I did that I had no problems charging my phone. It would always charge really fast. But two days ago the battery got extremely low and the phone died. Since that time it wouldnt turn on and wouldnt charge at all. When I plug it in it only shows a grey battery for a couple of seconds and thats it. I tried to pull out the battery and then put it back, still no result. I tried different cables, usb cables, my original cable, even another original cable from samsung s3. Still it wont charge, just the grey battery and no red light. I thought the problem was with the battery, but its not. My manager has the same phone so i tried to put her battery in to my phone. the phone turned on and was working but we tried to charge it and it wont. So she put my battery into her phone and charged it for me fully yesterday. I put my full battery into my phone.for about ten hours it used maybe only 7 % of the battery then I went to sleep (my battery was still almost full), I woke up in eight hours and today in the morning I see the message on the phone saying that the battery is critically low. I used to think that the problem was in the charging port on the phone so i was just planning to buy an external charger, but almost the full battery got empty overnight, it makes me think that there are some software problems with the phone. I tried to clean the port on the phone still no result. The phone itself is great and I really dont want to send it back, first of all you never know what is gonna happen to it while shipping and its gonna take the retailer at least a month to either fix it or return the money so thats a lot of pain in the ..... I can not stay without a phone for a month or even more.
Please guys help me to solve the problem!!!

Tatiana91,
The charging issue appears to be related to the micro-USB port, so your best bet would probably be to get a wireless charging solution and just not mess with it.
You could try to find someone that could replace the port for you, but that's rather iffy.

Without some additional information there's no way to know why the phone ran down overnight. Take a look at the various battery threads and stickies to find out what you need to do there, as well as what information to provide if it happens again. Obviously you need to solve the charging issue first.

I am having similiar issues, however if I remover the batter and reset it, i can get connectivity enough to charge at a reasonable rate. I have a spare battery as well. I am researching batter saver apps which are a help alleviate the situation until I find permanent solution.

I have read through the previous posts and seen a lot of responses referencing new cables, outlets, batteries etc. In my case, none of them were the issue...it was the Charge/USB port, and based on my experience I would suggest that many others have the same problem. (If a new cable or battery does not remedy the issue, I would suggest you consider it to be your port as well.)

I have an S3 that after 9 months began to charge erratically and quickly deteriorated to the point where it would lose charge when properly connected to a charging cable. I took it to Sprint, whose technician said it was a configuration issue (obviously not the case) and suggested it was due to using the "wifi optimizer". I tried to explain the phone holds its charge fine so it is not a config or battery issue - but a charge issue. Since they didnt help I was told to try new accessories and then send to the manufacturer. So, I tried several cables (Blackberry, Samsung etc) and none had a different result. So ultimately I sent it to Samsung for repair. After about a week, this is the response I got back in an email (I still have yet to receive the phone back):

Please view additional information below for more details.

Original Problem:
ACCESSORY - CHARGER ISSUES - WILL NOT CHARGE

Problem found:
GROSS ELECTROMECH DAMAGE-ABUSE

Solution:
BER

If you have any additional questions, please call us at 1-888-987-4357 and reference Ticket Number: 412XXXXXXX.

The "BER" referenced above means "beyond economic repair". So basically the problem was identified as being "gross abuse" of the charge/usb port in my phone - and specifically I was told by Advanced Support that it was an issue where the port is soldered to the motherboard. My phone was in a more than adequate protective case (w/ a port cover) and it had no water damage, nor was it dropped. Therefore by "gross abuse" it was concluded that I must of used the charger(s) too much and possibly wiggled it causing the damage. Samsung said it voided my warranty, and this repair is not covered. All the symptoms in previous threads were present on my phone. I steadily lost charging capabilities (not a sudden loss which may suggest I dropped it etc.). My phone was in perfect condition (no scratches etc). I was also told that if it was a defective part/device, it would be evident within 30 days (that was a new one to me). Regardless, I am being sent back a phone that was not repaired, and told that Samsung WILL NOT honor the warranty. I sense that as this problem increased, the cost incurred to repair became too much so Samsung is now returning them back to the owner with BER. This is enough for me to look elsewhere for all future technology purchases, but I am not dumb enough to dispose of an otherwise perfect phone. Looks like the options now are wireless charging pad (Qi technology) or buy a battery charger and spare battery.

This has been a very frustrating process, as I have spent hours on the phone with Samsung talking (arguing :() that my use of the phone was by no means "gross abuse". I cannot comprehend how charging a phone too much could be deemed abuse.

Has anyone had success sending their S3 back to Samsung for a Charge Port issue and actually gotten them to fix/replace it?

Tatiana, I just posted my experience above, and basically had the same issues - and sent it back to Samsung but they refused to repair it. I also did several factory resets and it never worked. I am researching wireless capabilities now. Perhaps that is our only option?

rcterps23,
Sounds like it's class action lawsuit time - Samsung telling you that it was gross abuse is b/s, and it's ludicrous to believe that a problem like that would manifest within 30 days.
This would be a design/poor quality parts/manufacturing issue - the charging port should be able to withstand at least 4 insertion/removal cycles per day for the typical contract period (2 years).

Unfortunately, unless you know a legal-beagle, your best bet is probably a wireless charging solution. Just my $0.02.
