Hey there boys and girls, so same here,
Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300
I9300XXEMR2_I9300VFREMA3_I9300BUEMA1_HOME.tar.md5 firmware
JKay framework
ClockworkMod Recovery
The phone would constantly freeze both with the screen turned on and off. The only way to get it back working was restarting it (either by taking out the battery or holding down the power button), only to see how it would freeze again; sometimes it would take a few minutes, sometimes a couple hours, but I could never know, it wasn't trust worthy.
I tried a few methods posted here and I came up with some of my own. The "fstrim" method through the "LagFix Free" app. helped in other ways but the phone kept freezing. I noted that turning off the wifi would make the periods between freezes longer, so did using it with power-saving off. Uninstalling apps like Facebook and Chrome didn't really make any difference... and such, but to no avail.
Finally I decided to start from scratch, fudge it! What I did was to restore phone to factory settings in order to restore modem, csc, phone & pda settings, you should use the ones from your country so it matches frequencies and such. Then upgrade with original Samsung update to 4.1.2. Then you can root and add frameworks, ROMs, etc. This is how it's done.
This is what I did to get my phone [seemingly] working, this may or may not work out for you, it also seems like some motherboards may actually be defective.
Follow this steps under your own risk, I assume no responsibility, etc.:
Get the following files:
- Original firmware, in my case I9300JKBLH3_I9300OJKBLI1_PTR-4.0.4.zip (Israel Orange) - Look in the internet, samfirmware.com is a good source. (to restore the original modem, csc, etc.)
- Clockworkmod recovery (if you want to root later)
- Latest firmware version, in my case I decided to go with one before the latest version (XXEMB5) because the last time I flashed the latest one (XXEMR2) the freezing started to happen (I actually believe that the problem may be in XXEMR2).
- Odin
Method:
- Backup, blah, blah, blah. (by this point you've already done this or don't care anymore)
- Have drivers installed and working (plenty of posts here about it)
- Open Odin, click on PDA, chose original firmware
- Restart phone in Recovery Mode (Pwr, vol+, home)
- Wipe data factory reset
- Restart phone in Download Mode (Pwr, vol-, home)
- Connect phone to computer through USB cable
- In Odin you'll see the Message "Added", click start.
- In Odin you'll see the Message "Pass", after the phone restarts disconnect it from the computer.
- In Odin click on PDA, chose new firmware (ie.: to update to 4.1.2)
- Restart phone in Download Mode (Pwr, vol-, home)
- Connect phone to computer through USB cable
- In Odin you'll see the Message "Added", click start.
- In Odin you'll see the Message "Pass".
If you want to root it flash the ClockworkMod recovery through the same PDA button in Odin. Uninstall undesired apps using TitaniumBackup.
That did it for me, my phone seems to be working for almost 48 hours now without freezing.
If you're using this tutorial to restore your phone to factory settings and send it to warranty, use the "Triangle Away" app from the market to restore the binary counter, otherwise they may refuse to service it and possibly even flag it (you know how it is these days).
Hope this helps some of you poor lost souls
