Samsung Galaxy S4 Battery Life

I too am wondering how you did this. My usage is similar to yours and I struggle to get 2 hours of screen time. I can watch the battery drain before my eyes whenever the screen is on. It drains 1-2% PER MINUTE when my screen is on at about 40-50% brightness. I'm using GSam battery Monitor so I know that my only problem with the battery is the screen. No problems with high drain due to anything else. I'm starting to wonder if there is something faulty and I should get a new phone. I've had it only for about 2 weeks. So you say that it took about 3 months to settle in? What was your battery life like when you first got it, with respect to on-screen time?

2.5-3 hours on a good day, sometimes 3.5. So still respectable, but it got a little better after the minor Samsung update. When I first got my phone, I had battery savers installed, but ultimately I decided against them. If I had to tell you exactly how I'm getting this kind of battery life, I honestly couldn't.

Do you have Google location services enabled too? When I have Use Wireless Networks enabled I get noticeably more battery drain as well so I've been disabling that. But I leave GPS on which doesn't seem to affect it too much.

Google Now is disabled, but that's about it.
That make a huge difference. If you don't have any other location based functions going and disable Google Now you'll save a ton of battery. You obviously won't get those features, but your screen time will get a lot better if you aren't on your phone constantly.

In another thread I compared how many times my location was checked using the Google API and it dropped dramatically when I disabled location based cards in Google Now. It went from checking my location once every 42 seconds to once every minute and a half and my screen time went from 2 hours to 4. If I avoid using my location based Tasker profiles I get closer to 5. The trick is you have to stop everything that's checking your location so often (which is hard to do). If you leave one that checks it very often you won't get any benefit. It seems like stuff shares location checks (e.g. my Tasker will use the location checks from Google Now rather than checking on its own), so unless you get all of them that want to use your location often you won't see any effect on battery.

Okay I'm experiencing some bad drain in my eyes. Coming from a 4S I was looking for a phone to avoid bad drainage, but seem to not had any luck with my S4. I literally can watch my battery go down when the screen is on. All novelty features disabled, GPS is On and so is Sync. Have an email set to push every 4 hours, brightness at 40%, WiFi Off, Google Now is disabled, signal strength is a solid 3 bars on LTE (ATT). I'm also only a week and a half in to the phone and am also on my second device, as I took the first one back due to the battery being so bad. Barely am able to make it through a day from 8am to 8pm with little-moderate use. Screen time is never more than 3 hours no matter what I do. I experience a drain of 20-25% if I leave it on overnight. Any suggestions? I'm leaning towards taking it back and getting yet another device. Oh and I'm not sure how to post screenshots and I will as soon as I can figure out how.

Now that my 4G LTE is back on track I'm getting less hours of battery time. Oh well! :D

AT&T S4 with stock battery. Mostly on wifi. MDOB rom/stock kernel, all smart features off, power saving mode enabled, auto brightness, dark themes on apps. Usage consisted of browsing, xda, pulse, instagram, FB, youtube, emails, 10 min of phone calls, and texting. No battery saving apps except greenify.

Wow... guys look at mine... what's wrong ?
The battery is GREAT only when screen is off. I saw my battery stay at 55% for half hour when screen is off.
But when I run game app or internet, I literally see the battery percent drop every few minutes.

Is that really normal for my phone to drain so much battery just 1.5hr of gaming and half hour of web-browsing ?

Maybe the phone or the battery are bad?
Are you still in time to exchange it, or do you have insurance for it?

As mentioned in an earlier post, it'd the inconsistency that is driving me nuts. Eg this morning my battery has drained 20% in 2 hours. But with the exact same usage pattern another morning, it could drop less than half of that. There is a lot I love about this phone, but I found my iPhone used less battery and was far more predictable as far as battery usage.

So it is more then likely that you have a bad unit. My first GS4 was like that, I exchanged it and I have better, a lot better battery life.

I think I find why my phone consumes more battery. I forgot to mention that my phone is actually s4 active. I just did a Google research and found out active consumes on screen battery twice as much as s4 because of brighter LCD screen. .:'(

When I try some tests, it gets very good life at times. When I am in my town which has LTE, the battery life is what I would consider good. I get at least 17 hours out of it with a lot of usage. In other areas though were reception is not quite as good, the battery seems to drain super fast. I was in an area like that today and I tried just putting the phone in airplane mode for the day since it was a day off. I took a ton of photos, listened to music, watched some video on WiFi... The phone only dropped about 10% in 7 hours.

I know searching for networks can be hard on the battery, but I just haven't seen it this bad with other phones.

The other behavior that is brand new, I see the almost instant drop from 100% to 90% when I take it off the charger that another poster mentioned.

I may have to try an exchange. The battery issues are kind of making me regret the phone a bit. I am just outside my 15 day trial though. Things seemed to be improving with the battery though, then things took a complete crap.

Well, at least it is removable. Frankly, at home it irritates me more on general principle than anything else. I think I have it under control again. But in daily life, if not using it, I come in, put it on the charger, top off all the time. I'm almost never below 60% as a result. If I'm gone for a long while, an extra battery in the pocket is an easy backup.

Yes, I will likely try another or second battery.

I guess what more drives me nuts with the phone is the battery usage when it sits. I have umproved it through tweaks. The thing with my iPhone was if the phone sat overnight unplugged, or was left at my station at work all day (some days I don't take it with me so I won't be disturbed) it used practically no battery. I wouldn't have to turn off any settings or tweak anything. This phone seems to go through a lot more battery in those cases. But, sometimes it doesn't lol. It's just the inconsistencies. I can have the same settings in the same scenario, and very different results.
