Samsung S7 screen going dark randomly

[Android Central Question]

I have had my S7 for years with no problem. Suddenly the screen started going completely dark, I mean dimmed to dark itself but still operational. I searched for solution online and tried going into a dark room and resetting the screen, I've tried covering the top light sensor and managed to get it back to normal. But it keep going dark totally after a while. Can anyone advise?

I have not tried it in Safe Mode because it is still working, just the screen is dark. I have to go into a dark room, cover the top of phone where the sensor is and wait for it to lighten and then slowly remove the cover so the screen does not suddenly sense light and goes dark again...... When I play a news channel on it, it plays it ok. But when I switch the channel off, and the phone goes into screen lock then it is back to darkened screen. So it is still functioning but seems like there is something wrong with light sensor.... any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

You should try safe mode to see if any 3rd party apps are causing this like belodion mentioned.

I just tried running it on Safe Mode, it's still going dark!

At this point either factory reset going fix this or you have to take it in for repair .
