There are data recovery apps available that you could try. The safest approach might be to remove the card from the phone and put it in a card reader attached to your PC, then see what you can get viewing the card as a drive with Windows. You can also run Windows' file check/error correction on the card from the drive properties.

Thanks, I will try this! :)

PROBLEM FIXED!!

Thanks to one of our IT guys, he sent me these fix instructions he found online. Props to whoever the original poster of this was.

All my pix and files are there, apps are back, it's back to 100% now (crossing fingers!)

Warning: to anyone with only a little space left on the SD Card that they're trying to fix, DO NOT USE CHKDSK

Chkdsk requires a certain amount of space to be available on the card in order to repair it.

FIRST: Download Recuva (it's free), and in the Advanced area, check the box for 'search for items that have not been deleted' (something like that) and you will be able to recover ALL OF YOUR pictures and videos (etc etc).

I just used Chkdsk FIRST for my 32GB sdcard (1.7GB left), and CHKDSK was unable to fix the card due to 'insufficient space available'.

I then used RECUVA. Guess what? I could see the 10,000 FILEXXXX.CHK that CHKDSK had left there, but not recover any information from them. If I hadn't used CHKDSK first, I would be able to recover my files (despite them being invisible in Windows).

Just something to beware for anyone in this situation!

Chkdsk on PC (Windows 8.1) worked for me! I was able copy the contents off my SD card with a card reader as my card was nearly full. Then I ran chkdsk as described and all is working well now. No data loss. Great tip! :D

I am having this same problem and I am very tempted to format my SD card and the only reason I am is because I have download an app called Dropbox and mind you that it connects to my computer, tablet and phone and I suggest that anyone if in future face this problem to download this app and connect with your computer. It will backup all photo's and any files that you feel that you need to save. You can even create files to backup just your music.

https://www.dropbox.com/

I am just saying this saved me big time. Although I am disappointed that I have to add everything back in. Apps are recoverable since you can download them back from google play but music and photos/files are hard to recover. This saved me a lot time too! I suggest that everyone download this and the more gadgets you add the more space you are given to save in dropbox for about a year but it will be more than enough.

I hope this helps somehow! At least if this happens in the future you have everything backed up. Also there is another function in newer android phone,Samsumg galaxy s3, s4, and s5 that can back up files for you as well. I am not to sure what it is called at the moment but I will check it out on my s3 and let everybody know.

I had the same problem with my s2 after flashing a rom using a stronton sd card . I inserted the card into a card reader and plugged it into the pc and dowloaded mini partition tool . In this I checked the filesystem and while checking it found errors and fixed my card . Hope this helps.

hi friend, i am having a problem with my new 32 gig ext sd card it doesn't shows the unmount and formatting option as it was showing before with my 4 gb ext card ....pls HELP.........................

I think i found the reason and remedy for this error...
I got the same error today and followed the steps listed earlier by some of the folks for Chkdsk...
Once windows was able to read the files, I started backing up my data...
I found that there was a file 100+MB in the Lost.Directory folder on E drive...
I deleted the file and left the rest of the files (around 32kb) in there...
I was ready to format the card when I put it back in the S4 but to my surprise error msg "Damaged card , please format" was gone...
Thanks...

I tried using CHKDSK /x /f <Drive Letter>
but CMD replies:
--->Cannot open volume for direct access.

CMD replies like this because I cannot connect my phones's USB to PC (remember the interface where you tap "USB Connection On," something like that with Android logo on top, and it does not appear whenever I connect my phone to PC)

I tried to Mount SD Card using Setting>Storage>Mount SD Card only to fail maybe because my SD Card is "Damaged"

I cannot Format it both in PC and in Android.

Please help me.

Like the title, my new sd card (Samsung 16gb) of 2 weeks is continuously unmounted and saying it is damaged, then miraculously working g a few minutes later. This is now the third card I have used, having already tried SanDisk and Lexar, I know there are threads about it happening during boot and other stuff but mine is happening all the time, and will likely become unusable by the end of the week like the others. Any input or suggestions?

i just got the same thing try this - first open the command prompt by putting cmd in the search bar from the start key. then open the command prompt and click on "run as administrator" then run the prompts

Note 4 I removed from phone, no good. Did Setting, Storage, Mount SD, it worked. Error gone, nothing loss. Granted it I was available to view information on card before just getting error on phone and I have all my pictures auto backup but wanted to remove error on the phone and not reformat the card.
