Semi Lag Texting

Was wondering if anyone has a lag when you text and want to use the character symbols? For example when I want to use the exclamation mark i have to hold the letter "a" and wait for the "!" Sign to appear. It sort of has like a 5 second lag. It seemed much faster on the Note 5, weird. So lately I've been just pressing the "Sym" key on the bottom left then pressing whichever symbol to use. Seems faster. What's your take on this?
