Should I get Nexus Protect?

Nexus Protect doesn't cover loss or theft. :(
Neither does Square Trade.

I'm not a big one for these types of warranty's, but went with Nexus Protect on this one. Reason being they are not a common phone and local repair places may not be able to fix them. Plus I've read dealing with Huawei directly can be a very big hassle. Seems like Google is quick to ship replacement phones with no deductible if there is any kind of issue.

As mentioned above, it's very reasonably priced, too, with a modest deductible, at least compared to most other policies.

I agree that warranties are a waste. The only incentive for this device is that if you shatter the screen, the whole device has to be disassembled and there is a chance the glass visor will crack in the process as well. It could easily cost $150-$200 to fix.

I purchased Nexus protect with mine. I dont have a habit of dropping phones, but ya never really know .
But I have had a hardware issues in the past and had to have a phone replaced ( USB port connection)
I got lucky and with that phone replacement that had USB port issue . I got a new phone for its replacement
I also had a refurd replacement been lucky there and didn't have an issue with the refurb
Its more of a habit when I order to get protection upon ordering then anything. So far so good with the 6p :)

I was talking about renter's/homeowner's insurance, you can include electronics and most insurance companies only charge $100 deductible if lost or stolen. I know Nexus Protect doesn't cover it, that's why I brought that up!

Make sure your insurance company doesn't jack up your rates (or drop you) if you file a small claim or two.

One thing to know is that it's impossible to get a screen repaired without it. Huawei has indicated that they aren't doing any repairs out of warranty, even if you pay for it. Break your screen without the protection and you are left to replace the screen yourself. Not sure if any repair services are fixing nexus 6p screens yet?

Ah. I'll check with my insurance company to see if the phone will be covered.

Wouldn't that be covered under the standard manufacturer's warranty?
It would have if within a year.
That was a different phone over a year old so manufacture's warranty was over .I was just using that others phone issue as an example as to why i purchased nexus protect for my 6p :)

Did you purchase the insurance program on your Nexus?

I did. But only because a) it was a one-time flat fee ($89) and b) the deductable is low ($80). And yes, I understand that if I used it, I may be a referb unit in return. But if my phone got damaged enough for me to go through and make a claim, that referb unit will be in much better shape than my broken one.

Not sure I'd go with the monthly plans now, especially since Assurion raised their rates across the board. When I had JUMP, the deductible for my Nexus 6 was $185 I think.... which is about the same price as I would pay to get the screen replaced.

By the way, the reason for the insurance rates jumping is the screens. Everyone's slapping bonded screens in their phones now, where the whole display (glass, digitizer and display panel) are all bonded together, making it near impossible to repair. So the whole sub assembly, which runs $150 to $200+, has to be replaced.

I like to have accidental damage plans because...well...klutz. :-)

I have accidental damage and all that stuff on my iPhone, but I think that's through Verizon rather than through Apple. I was planning on getting a Nexus 6p at tax return time and was kinda sweating about what I was gonna do for accidental damage, since, you know....me.

The 6p is Verizon whitelisted so I know I can at least use the phone on the network, but I'm certainly not gonna be able to get in on any insurance action with it. So I'm gonna have to find some other way.

I haven't heard of "protect" before now. Skimming the thread, I've managed to glean that it's $89, has a $79 deductible, and doesn't cover against loss or theft.

I don't feel that the $89 is unreasonable, nor am I too upset wih the $79. I'm okay with refurb as long as it's squeaky clean software wise and indistinguishable from brand new once it's in a case. I'm troubled by the "no loss or theft protection", though, but that's not an absolute deal breaker so long as it covers against accidental damage and "non-accident-related defect.

So does Protect go at least that far? If so, then yes, I think I will spring for it unless someone here knows of another program that will go above and beyond what Protect will do for not too much more money.

Thanks for the info, guys!!!

Cheers!

Nexus Protect costs $89, with a $79 deductible. It'll protect from accidental breakage and water, and it'll add another year to the manufacturing warranty and that's about it. That's already almost $200. I'm not going to purchase it. Besides, I have my S6 active as a backup in case my 6P would happen to break. I don't see the point of getting that insurance if it doesn't cover loss or theft. YMMV, of course.

you nailed it, and if you're somewhat klumsy I'd suggest getting it. If you don't use it, you're only out $89, but if you do, you'll be pretty damn happy you decided to get it. At least that was my rationale. Also, you can still get insurance through VZ (Asurion) but if something were to happen, they wouldn't replace it with another 6p, but a "comparable device" so who knows what you'd get.

couple other options, renter's insurance would cover your phone if it were lost or stolen. if you own a home, most homeowner's insurance policies give you the option to individually list electronics, which would allow a more reasonable deductible of $100 (instead of $500). As somebody mentioned, make sure you ask if you were to submit a claim for a stolen phone, what if anything would happen to your monthly payment.

Another thing, many bank issued credit cards provide free insurance should you use your card to pay your monthly phone service plan payment. I have a Wells Fargo card, and yeah, covers my phone.

Off thread topic but how does the 6P compare to your Active? I have one and am thinking about the 6P as well and keep my Active which I like.

Same with your car, you don't need it but you have it. Well some states require it but some don't.

I'm on a Nexus 6P, bought the Nexus protect. I've been buying Square trade since at least the Galaxy S3. No problems with that phone. But you can get a prorated refund from square if nothing happens whenever you want.

Now my last phone was a Nexus 5 bought square on it. Happy I did. First time ever I dropped my phone in the toilet. Wouldn't turn back on. I contacted square and they gave me a refund for the original price of the phone which I put towards my Nexus 6P. It was the first time I ever did something like that. As the saying goes **** happens just be ready. And also like others have said I like the peace of mind. I didn't even use a case since I knew I could get it fixed.

Hope this helps.
