About 8 inches where I live. Biggest snow storm we've had in the 10 years that I've lived here.
I lived in South Carolina for most of my life. I know what you mean. Getting snow was like an adventure and exciting event. Especially for the kids.

No kids, and I grew up in New England, so kind of old hat to me. But my Florida born wife was outside making snowmen as soon as there was enough on the ground.

<bad snow>

Y'all can keep it.

Current Home: Florida
Original Home(s): Wisconsin via Illinois

Our bougainvillea got a bit stressed the last few cold/freezing nights, but this plant still looks amazing. Auto and no 'adjustments'.

Yes auto mode does indeed suck. Macro shots are not the right way to judge a camera's prowess, any decent lens with a good minimal focusing distance can take good macros.

If you ever look at a histogram of the V30's auto shots, HDR in particular is lacking. I never use the stock app except for wide angle shots, all my photos are shot with the Google hdr camera port and then almost always edited in Lightroom.

The phone has great hardware but LGs post processing is severely lacking. See Juan Bagnell's (Pocketnow) real camera review of the V30, he nails it when he says the V30 is a good camera if you know you way around post processing manually.

Honestly, I like the pics I've seen in auto for the most part and others seem to be very complimentary of the pictures I've been sharing on my social sites too - most being in Auto.
The 'macro' shots have awesome detail and color to them. I also appreciate the depth to those (like the ants). I used another 'flagship' phone and couldn't get a picture that clean to save my life. I'm sure some of it was software, but even after installing the Pixel camera to it, it didn't help. I digress...

The fact that you edit your pics with lightroom after you've taken them with Google hdr camera might imply their HDR software for auto-mode isn't any better, no? I could be wrong.

Not looking for an argument here, but I'd be interested in understanding why you think the Google HDR software is better if you require manual post processing anyway.

I'm going to check out Juan Bagnell's (Pocketnow) review... thanks for the referral.

Don't take this the wrong way Rick, I don't mean for this to sound high and mighty - the more you know about actual photography, the less you will rate the LG's auto camera. I recommend you watch Bagnell's real camera review, he's a top photographer and does great camera reviews.

Also, I have a Note 8 and Pixel 2 XL as well and frequently do side by side comparisons - see my comparisons earlier this thread and also the pixel 2 photo thread or Note 8 photo thread. I am not a pro photographer by any means but know the basics and own pretty much every high end camera phone that comes out.

When you are post processing, you want the raw file or even jpeg to retain as much detail as possible that you can then work with polishing. The V30 stock camera app does not capture nearly enough detail compared to the google app. Also, post processing in light room is optional. If you just take auto shots in google app versus stock app, you will find the google app photos 100% better. Most people will just leave it at that and be happy. I did detailed tests of the V30 stock app versus google app in this very thread a few pages back - I suggest you look that up to see the difference.

Google's HDR+ post processing is remarkable. Best in the industry. The pixel's have the best camera not because of the lens, but because of google's computational algorithms. It's too much to explain in this post and I wont do it full justice anyway, so I recommend you just google what they do. Its fascinating.

Not high and mighty at all. I appreciate the conversation... and your tone isn't confrontational in the least. You're absolutely correct in your assertion that I'm a complete novice with photography. I just know what I personally think looks good to me.

Great explanation - So in most cases, if a person is using auto... even with Google, unless it's RAW would it make sense to do your own post processing? There's a lot of pictures in this thread, so I'll have to go back and have a look at the differences. Hardest part is the compression if you posted directly to AC instead of linking from another site.
Speaking of which, someone recommended Lensdump as a place to post pictures up to 100MB! Worth sharing.

I'll look around to get the google camera APK. Cheers!

Glad you didn't get mad. Everyone hates a know it all, so I hope I didn't come across that way. Its just that I have spent hours and hours geeking out over phone cameras that I get excited :)

Here you go, here's a comparison I did of the V30 stock app versus Pixel 2 XL:

Here's the V30 going up against the Note 8:

Let me dig up the post I did comparing stock app versus google app. That shows the differences clearly!

@xxaarraa1983 - congratulations for all your work! I have 3 questions:

1. can you upload same photo (whatever you want) in 3 samples: Lg V30 Auto, Google Camera UNEDITED, Google Camera EDITED? I don't have any skill in photo editing and I'm courious about the UNEDITED Google Camera results comparing with EDITED photos.

2. Why you reccomend an outdated Google Camera version? It is better than 5.1 (last version) ?

3. I saw your versus V30 + Google Camera vs. Pixel 2 . There is no differences between photos. Can you provide an exif for both?
If not, my impression was that you make a hard postprocessing work in Lightroom, in order to achive the same image from both phones, in a RAW format. I doubt that original jpeg files from V30 with Google Camera and Pixel 2 with same version of GC, can be 100% equals. A person that don't read about your test, can simply say "is the same picture form Pixel 2, copy / paste" :)
