So what is causing the delays you think with 512gb?

I agree. I think the OVERALL sales for the Note 9 will be so so. With sales of the 512 a lot more than expected, but the 128 model being well less than expected so overall you get not so good sales. I'm not sure of the profit margins though. If they sold a lot more 512 than expected but sold a lot less 128 than expect it could come out to a wash. The Note 9 seems more popular than the S9 at launch this year.

It "may" turn out to be "so-so, but the whining across the net about not being able to find a 512 (blue) isn't so "so-so"

I myself think sales will be rather good. This is certainly my first note as I moved from the S-Series (was an S3, S5, and S7 Edge user).

Anyway have a look at this.... Galaxy Note 9 is beating the Galaxy S9 in more ways than one. Nothing definitive, but...

There is a parts shortage. And if you're not a procurement specialist with Apple, you can fahgetaboutit..

IS it because Apple has 3 phones at almost the same time coming out? How does Apple get to bogart all the parts?

Anyway, one is crazy to think an iPhone is better than these Note devices. I can't even see using an iPhone after using the Note 9. Would be like going from a Lambo down to a Prius. I got that analogy from flossy carter when he was describing I believe the Note 8 to the Pixel one time.

I'm not an authority on such matters, but information is out there... http://bfy.tw/K0fZ

Apple simply has deeper pockets and phenomenal brand recognition. Not that Samsung is a slouch, but let's face it - Apple's valuation is legendary.

Component makers likely get really excited when they have a customer capable of buying in sustained HUGE bulk quantities and is known to sell huge volumes of end-products. I think...

For North America and Europe yea, but in Asia, Apple has a lot more competition. Over there Samsung as well as Hauwei and ZTE are heavy hitters. Over here it's just Samsung and Apple.

Also, Samsung makes more lines of phones. Maybe get rid of some of the J crap phones or something to free up more internal components.

Samsung just vastly underestimated the popularity of the 512 GB note 9
Exactly. It's as simple as this. Had they forecasted the 512gb devices higher, this would not be an issue. It's not like Apple has never had shortages at launch. I'm always hearing about backorders on new iPhones at launch.

Samsung never convened focus groups or read/consulted any online forums while the Note9 was in its gestational phase? The clamor for greater storage from Note devotees was there. For the two months prior to the Note9's launch folks were hoping that the large storage variant, usually reserved for Samsung's eastern markets, would make it to The United States. Samsung seems to have chosen, in my opinion, to be tone-deaf on the matter.

They knowingly chose to alienate customers and forgo sales and profits? Why?

Marketing forecasts, like weather forecasts, are sometimes inaccurate. Also, limited availability of parts can delay manufacturing, even if the demand is accurately foreseen.

What Samsung did apparently choose, however, is to unfairly prioritize new shipments over some pending pre-orders, even though they'd promised delivery by release date.

Note devices, ostensibly, are for power users. To see only select markets receive the top spec-ed Notes, as in recent years, hints at something casual about Samsung's attitude regarding getting the best device into the hands of willing and hopeful buyers. As I mentioned, Note aficionados were asking for more storage and now Samsung is hurrying to catch-up. Some buyers having to wait for two months for their blue 512GB is inexcusable.

Asian markets though always seem to get the higher spec devices over north america.

Also, Samsung probably also figures the 512gb models people will keep for a few years since it holds a lot. Of course people like me get the new model every year.

Some have remarked in their excitement for getting a Note9 as their Notes 2, 3 & 4 have gotten long-in-the-tooth; I admire those who can get that much service out of a smartphone. Of course, this is from my anecdotal browsing of forums yet my youngest brother is waiting for his OB 512GB Note9 after having soldiered-on with his Note 5 for the past three years. It's a mixed bag of consumers out there from what I've gathered.

At least it's an option now for people to keep their phones longer. With 8gb of RAM and 512gb internal storage along with the ever increasing prices of new phones, you could easily hang onto it for a while.

Except no 5G in any Note.

This is exactly why I think phone sales have gone down, they are getting to expensive. I expect this trend to continue until the prices start coming down.

New phone prices won't come down unless there are specials after release. That's why Samsung is adding features to their mid range phones for people who don't want to spend $1,000. The Samsung mid ranges will probably be what the flagship prices were a few years ago.

That is why I think phone sales will fall, and have been having. Spending over a grand for a phone, people will start keeping them longer, it's just economics. The people on these forums are the minority that buy phones every year if not more. Just my opinion

I agree. Most of us on here are not the majority. I also wonder with the pre orders and such if it's the sales pitch as well playing a factor? I mean the common person walks into Best Buy or Tmobile and they talk them into buying the 512gb model even though they really don't need all that storage or performance but they believe the sales guy and go ahead and get it.

Everyone is also missing another point. If the carrier is spending, let's say, $600 on a phone, and they have thousands of stores to stock, they're tying up many millions of dollars - on that model alone. Now you get someone like Samsung, that has the S9, the S9+ and the Note 9, and you triple the amount of money sitting in the stockroom. It's incredibly expensive, even for AT&T (ST&T Mobility is really Cingular) or Verizon. Apple? 3 models. It's a lot cheaper - and the markup is a lot higher.

Even running a small independent dealership - if you want to stay in business for more than a year, you need a good forecasting model, or you'll either run out of phones, or bankrupt yourself trying to keep enough in stock.

A phone hat retails for $100? Hardly worth worrying about (especially since you probably get $150 or more for signing a customer to a plan).

Right. I agree that phone sales will fall. But just don't think the prices of new phones will come down. I just may hold off on any pre-orders in the future and get the post street sales again. The gifts they try to entice you with haven't been stellar recently.
I buy phones for my own personal use, not some status symbol, who needs to be the first on the block with one. I love new phones, but these prices (and down payments) are getting out of hand.
