Sorry. Rant. Is anyone else as sick of "it just works" as I am????

Adriandb, the iPhone is definitely a status symbol in the sub 25 demographic, even more so for teens and pre teens. Now don't get me wrong, I find it silly that any parent would buy their kid any smartphone but that's besides the point. The iPhone still remains a status symbol in those ages and does carry on into older demographics but to a lesser degree. I still meet plenty of thirty somethings that vault iPhones above other smartphones just because they are iPhones. Apple has done a great job of making iOS desirable to people who don't even know what a smartphone is. For the record, I'm not really putting down the iPhone, just saying what I've noticed are people's perceptions of the device.

If someone says that they bought an iPhone because "it's an iPhone", that implies that it's a status symbol (for them, at least). That's what I was saying in my post.

I disagree. As I said earlier, there is nothing even remotely close to an iPhone out there. For anyone looking for a smartphone that's dead simple to use, has a nice ecosystem and doesn't require that they learn anything new just to use their device there's only one choice. I don't think that describes anyone participating in this thread, but it does describe a huge number of people. For them, they want an iPhone because they want the iPhone experience and no one else out there is offering anything similar.

This isn't a demographic I interact with much. If all the frustration people are expressing here is about some 22 year old saying their iPhone is the best thing around then again, You might just want to get over it. Who cares what they think?

No no, I don't care what they think. I'm just saying that there is a status symbol aspect to the iPhone. One could worry about the notion that the youth are unable to think critically when they make statements like "I want it because it's an iPhone" but that's another discussion. All I'm saying is you shouldn't dismiss the fact that for many, albeit many young and not fully developed minds, the iPhone and Apple products as a whole are considered a status symbol which is often considered by parents when purchasing these devices for their children. Just my thoughts.

I'm not sick of "it just works". Some people love iOS. Apparently millions of them! My issue is "it just works like an iDevice" I would choose any other device OS before iOS. Choice is good and i would choose iOS last. People need to use what they like and stop worrying about what others are running.

Again, you missed the point entirely. No one is saying what you have imagined them to be saying. No one is saying the iPhone isn't great for certain people. How are people continually drawing that imaginary connection between "it just works" and "no one can enjoy iOS"?? Come on people. Not every single thread on here is bashing iOS or the iPhone. If you're itching to fight about it, don't try to create something when there's nothing there.

Okay tiger, you're right and everyone else is wrong. Telling me to "get over it" is impossible because I'm not "in it". I couldn't care less what phone you use, so conversely, you shouldn't care that I don't like the iPhone. The iPhone does nothing for me...perhaps YOU need to accept that, so you can begin to heal.

Exactly...and that alone makes them an iSheep...

It does mean something, and for most people it has nothing to do with an emotional tie to the product or company.

The reason people know they'll want the next iPhone is that there's nothing else like it. When people are iPhone users it isn't because of a feature checklist like so many people use when picking their android device, it's the overall user experience. Unless you've been a long time iPhone user it may not be an obvious thing, but it's just so much more simple, so much easier. You don't have to concern yourself with your device. Your device works for you instead of the other way around. Again, this simplicity comes with a price, but it still exists.

I don't believe this at all. You make it sound like the iPhone accidentally fell from God's hands and we discovered it and every other device is inferior. It's a great device, but so is the One, S4, Note 2, Optimus G Pro, Nexus 4. Also, if there's "nothing else like it" tell that to Apple so they stop suing everybody, will ya? It's funny how in Apple's world, there's nothing else like it when they want to make it sound like it's the best, but then all of a sudden every single Samsung device is so much like it that they can get billions in court. Apple and the fans of Apple love to use the same arguments interchangeably as if they can fight for and against different things with the same phrases. I don't know how that makes sense in their world but everyone who is free from the Apple ecosystem see's it and just has to shake their head in astonishment.

Hah! I'm not saying you're wrong per se, but getting upset because people don't use the same analytical process you do to choose their devices doesn't make it the wrong decision for them. You stated that people would make different purchasing decisions if they used their brains, I'm saying that's a misguided statement.

I don't care what you or anyone else uses, that's my point. I'm not going to be passing judgement or calling people names just because they use a certain device. If that's how you choose to live your life, by all means, enjoy the frustration it brings.

.........doesn't require that they learn anything new just to use their device..........
I would be learning something new to make a phone call on the iPhone. If I was learning something new, I assure you my wife and parents would be as well. I would dare step out on a limb and say there's more people out there like me and that unfortunately makes your argument false.

I'm not an apple apologist. I mean I understand all companies need to protect patents, but some of the legal assertions that Apple has made are ridiculous. I'm also not saying that the iPhone is the Jesus phone, just saying its the right device for a lot of people. I had my reasons for moving away from iPhones to the One and I'm sure my reasons are in line with my many people here use Android devices.

This is a totally flawed argument. Where is your empirical evidence to support this? Why is it so hard for you to believe that an iPhone is the right choice for a lot of people?

You're right, your argument is flawed. Show me where I said the iPhone isn't the right choice for a lot of people. I simply said a lot of people buy them because someone they desperately want to emulate is doing it. I had no idea you required "empirical evidence" to understand something so simple. It's consumerism at it's basic core... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumerism

While it is annoying usually people who use this argument aren't saying other phones don't work.. They are more saying out of the box it's much easier to use.

Actually a good friend of mine thinks just that. He uses that phrase all the time and equates the "other" smart phone with Microsoft Windows XP (which he still uses). He calls them Bill Gates phones (meaning Android). Funny thing is he has never used any other phone, but he "knows" they don't "just work" like his iPhone. I AM sick of hearing it...

Almost every time Apple is brought up in any thread. you're right there telling everyone why it's the best thing available. So I would take a stab in the dark and say you're doing exactly what you just said you don't do. Otherwise, you wouldn't be right in the middle of it almost every time.

I always struggle to understand why if Apple is as perfect as you and others say it is, why are you here in the Android forums? OBVIOUSLY something from Android was appealing to you enough to draw your attention. And if it was, that means that some tiny little aspect wasn't being fulfilled by your Apple product. If this is the case, why do you have to quote everyone telling them how incredible Apple is? Can't you just enjoy your Android without trying to justify to yourself and all of us why you made the choice you made? I have made (I believe) 3 posts in iMore. And 2 of them was to say how much I liked the appearance of iOS 7 and the other I forget what the topic was but my comment was positive. I am 100% okay with people liking iOS and Android for different reasons. But it's bad taste to tell one why the other is better on their "turf". All it does is leads to arguments, insults, and frustration. Enjoy what you have and let everyone else do the same.

Yep...that's what I'm talking about...I work with a guy who says he'd never buy anything other than an Apple phone because "He tried to use a Treo back in 2003 and it sucked". (It actually did suck, as I owned one too, but that was still 4 years before Apple put out their first iPhone) I'm so disillusioned that I don't bother telling him the Treo had Windows Mobile on it, and that Microsoft and Google are two different companies. He also buys Macbooks because he heard they are better than Windows based computers...Yet all he does is surf the internet and check his email. Yep, that justifies it.

THANK YOU! That's all everyone here has been saying! Each OS has it's place among different people. iOS wasn't perfect for you, and it isn't perfect for us. It's not the very best thing available or everyone would use it. Why are we debating it if we all seem to understand that different people like different things!? Whew. Glad we could get that behind us.

The other day a friend of mine was trying to show me some pictures on his iPhone. He had trouble getting the pictures up, and when he finally did a text message came in that I could read that he was bit embarrassed about, and then quickly he tried hitting the home button about 10 times and it wouldn't respond. It just works, indeed..

Really? Care to provide examples? In this thread all I've said is that there is something to the claim that the OP didn't get.

I'm here because I use the One as my daily driver. I switched from the iPhone because even with it being jailbroken I found the customization options limiting. I couldn't stand how data was siloed. I was really jealous of larger screens. When I discovered the One and saw how Android had evolved it was obvious to me that for me the One was a better device than anything else available.

If this is the case, why do you have to quote everyone telling them how incredible Apple is?
Are you sure you don't have me confused with someone else? Apple makes some great products, but it's far from a company without faults. iOS get a disproportionate amount of crap in these forums, but that's to be expected. I'll state my opinion, but again I'm not an Apple apologist.
