sprint navigator updated to telenav gps

The ability to have it running as a background service is okay; the inability to choose is the problem. Those who would like to keep it running should have the option, but if there's a way to set it to not run in the background, I would exercise that option.

Kenji: Thank you for looking into the background task issue.

Ditto. Hey Kenji... how are you and MB?

Since I use the software fairly often, having it run in the background is pretty good for me. Having an option, though, is not a bad idea.

Thanks for the heads up with this update. Would have never knew about it.

So far seems good after the install. Definitely feels faster than the 2.8 version.

Hmm, this is a great question. As it's the first time I've encountered it, I'm going to have to get the official scoop from our product team. Let me do a bit of research and I'll certainly follow up when I find more info. :)
Thank you, please do.

Kenji: Are there plans to address the issue of it running as a background service when not in use?
Normally, I wouldn't be concerned, as in my use, I have not noticed any noticeable change in battery drain after installing the update.

However, it seems that, for some unknown reason, it has frozen on me at least three times in the past week, whereas it's never done that prior to the update. If I wait for Android to give me the option to force close it, and run it again, it starts up fine. I can only guess that perhaps somehow sitting in the memory for too long causes it to have issues restarting, because if I close it manually with Watchtower before I start the app, it doesn't freeze.

I haven't heard if it is keeping the phone from sleeping, which would be even a more concern.
I can assure you that it's not keeping the phone from sleeping--My phone's battery life has stayed the same this past week as it had before, and between going to bed and waking up for work, my battery had only gone down from 100% to 96%... if the phone did not go into sleep during that time, I'd see a much larger drop in battery percentage.

Hey all - I want to assure you that I haven't forgotten about this. I've let our team know about your concerns and they are currently looking into this. I'm going to follow up with them right now about this and will let you all know what I find out. Thanks everyone for your patience.

Glenn - Sorry to hear about your phone freezing after the update. This is specific problem new to me so I'm going to have to research this one a bit.

I'm doing great - life here at TeleNav is good. Always doing something different (which I really like) and it's fun working in the GPS/mobile space. Regarding MB, I'd certainly say she's doing well. Besides working hard here, she spends a lot of time with her family. She's a really good boss. Overall, I'd say we're doing good! :)

I agree with you about the button and all the feedback I have received here is extremely helpful. To tell you a little bit about my role here at TeleNav, I handle our social media efforts and what I do is, I take feedback I see online back to our teams. Whenever our customers have a concern (like this for example), I want to be able to let our product team know about it and it's my goal to act as a voice for our users internally here at TeleNav.

No problem! Speed was actually a huge goal for this update as a lot of the customer feedback about the previous version was about the quickness of the app. I actually have an EVO myself so I'm well aware of the experience. On a personal note, I like you, am very happy that the speed has been improved. :)

KenjiatTeleNav,,,

Anyway on next update to have the actual speed appear like the garmin nav units have? That would be a nice feature. Love that on my brothers garmin.

Thank you for the update. I'm waiting your feedback on the background issue before I install, so I truly appreciate your assistance.

A few questions.

1. Will this update work on the Sprint LG Optimus S? I currently have Telenav version 5.8 which was automatically loaded as a part of the 'Sprint ID' pack.

2. If OK for the Optimus S, will installing the update overwrite/replace version 5.8 or should I uninstall v5.8 first?

3. What is the installed size of the new version? (5.8 takes up 8.96MB of space.)

4. Any way to move new version to the SD card in Android 2.2? Version 5.8 cannot be moved to the SD card.

Thanks!

I use to use google navigation all the time because it was so much better, but this update changes everything for me. Sprint navigation is now my choice of gps navigation. Many great features. The fact that it is running in the background i have not even noticed it.

I installed the update yesterday and I really like the theme but it does run in the back ground and I did notice a large battery drain, enough that I had to uninstall the update. I did attempt to force close but it would start right back up again. Hope telenav gets a fix as I do prefer it over Google.

Wait - your EVO drops only 4% charge all night? Wow! My phone drops 8-10% or so in the first 10 minutes after I disconnect it from the charger (right after the charge light turns green. I've tried the other options (like turning the phone off, charging till green, turning it back on, charging till green, dancing in a circle holding the phone over my head etc... ) same results - on the stock ROM (unrooted), 2600mAH battery (or the stock battery)

Sorry, didn't mean to derail the thread. I'm waiting for an update on the app-in-the-background too before I take the plunge. For now, google navigation will have to do (I especially like the caching feature in the current version of google maps)

The latest TeleNav v6.2 may be running in the background, but I have had it installed since it was posted on this forum and I have not had any adverse battery effects.

A program running in the background is not necessarily eating up your battery. All it does is load some data to the RAM so that when you do start up and use the program, it starts faster. I just checked Spare Parts and it says that none of my battery use is due to TeleNav and that makes sense because I haven't used it since the update.

That means something is preventing your Evo from going into sleep mode, you've got Wifi off, have got 4G on, or a combination of these conditions.

My money's on your phone not going into sleep. If you haven't already, install Spare Parts. Then charge your phone back to 100%, unplug, and turn off the screen and leave it alone for about 10 minutes.

After 10 minutes, turn your screen back on and run Spare Parts. Go into Battery History. It should look something like this if your phone has gone into sleep mode:

If, on the other hand, the bar for "Running" is at 100%, that means your phone never went into sleep mode, even though it should have about 3 minutes after your screen turned off, if not sooner.

If you tap on the bars, you'll get slightly more details. For instance, here's the details from my "running" bar:

And even after that, my battery was still at 100% when I took the screenshots (it soon dropped down after that, of course, with the screen on and me running different apps).

If your phone never went into sleep mode, check your usage statistics, and see if you can figure out what app is preventing it from going to sleep.

I can confirm I _DID_ have adverse battery affects. I had noticed a significant drain in my battery and when I wet to check what had used the battery since I had unplugged over 70% of it had been used by Telenav. This was after using it once to try it out and then thinking I had closed it.

BTW, as an aside did the update get pulled? All I did to get the update was to go into Sprint Navigation. My wife did the same thing and it said it was updating and it still shows the sprint navigation and not Telenav so either the update failed or is no longer updating to Telenav.

Thanks Glenn. I did check it and found that the phone *is* going to sleep properly. I keep Wifi/4G/Bluetooth off, while GPS is on. 3G is enabled, but for the test, I turned sync to be manual for all services (Email, stocks, weather, gmail contacts/calendar etc.. ) - charge still drops about 10% within 10 minutes after I disconnect - but then it stabilizes (doesn't discharge that fast after that). I had kinda forced myself to accept that as an EVO flaw (and picked the 2600mAH battery - lasts me about 2-3 days now on a single charge), but when I saw your earlier post about such a "normal" drop, I just had to ask :)

Sorry to have derailed the telenav conversation...

Hi everyone - I promise you I'm still alive. ;) I apologize about the slow reply. Since I last posted, I've passed all of your feedback on to our 6.2 EVO team and they are currently looking into this.

Again, I want to thank everyone for all of their helpful feedback. Please let me know if there is any other feedback you want me to give them because my role here is to be the voice for you all.
