sprint navigator updated to telenav gps

No this update will not be automatically pushed to the device. Just like you have the option to install HTC and Sprints updates. You do not have to.

Like I didn't know that already... but thanks. LOL

I'll stick with my outdated one through Sprint. Don't need another way to big program stuck on my internal memory.

Hi everyone,

My name is Kenji and I'm with TeleNav. If you have any questions about the update, I'd be happy to answer them. :)

Kenji
Is there a way to turn off alternate route suggestions upon route start? I've got the app set to avoid traffic delays, which means it often doesn't use the original route chosen anyway, so that's an extra second wasted waiting for the app to show alternate routes...

So, this update is in no way "Affiliated" with Sprint. Now, I don't know if I should uninstall it or Not?

Hmm, this is a great question. As it's the first time I've encountered it, I'm going to have to get the official scoop from our product team. Let me do a bit of research and I'll certainly follow up when I find more info. :)

To answer your question, TeleNav has always powered Sprint Navigation and it's actually the same navigation experience you're used to - we've just changed the name and added some new features. In terms of having any reasons to be worried about this update, there's no reason to be - we are still partners with Sprint. Hope this helps answers your concerns.

At this time, no it is not being pushed out. If you'd like full details on how to update your device, please check out this post.
After watching and learning more about "TeleNav" I've decided this actually is a better navigation system than the one I previously had.

Thumbs up for that informative video KenjiatTeleNav

Kenji: Are there plans to address the issue of it running as a background service when not in use?

I believe just like other applications that runs in the background - it doesn't really show any significant drainage unless being used. Once you turn GPS off after using it - then there isn't anything to worry about.

Also, you can always check to see what's draining your battery -- (menu - settings - about phone - battery - battery use. And to see which application is running at all times > menu - settings - applications - running services.

Let me get back to you on this. Can I ask what your main concerns are? I'll provide your thoughts directly to our team who worked on this update for the EVO. :)

I don't like the fact that it runs as a background service and automatically starts up. It eats up memory for an application that I might use once a week if that.

Here are my observations after using it for a week:

* ]Doesn't seem to use any more power when off or on as the the old Sprint Nav was.

* Starts up much faster. Also exits much faster as I don't have to confirm exit if the routing is not active.

* Alternate route is handy since I have two routes home from work and if they are close in time I actually prefer one over the other even though it's longer.

* Like the addition of a home button but would prefer it on the main screen. Like to the left of the mic button.

* Looking up places seems to work well. Speaking an address not so much. Google Nav works better in this case.

* Would like to use the Commute Alert function but don't want to pay $5 a month to get it.

* Would like more space used for map when navigating. Top header seems oversized. Ok on the EVO but can imagine smaller screens are a problem.

* Like the green bar indication when you approach a turn.

Wow. Thanks for the in-depth feedback. I think our team who worked on this version will find your thoughts extremely useful. I really appreciate you taking the time.

In particular, I would agree with you about placement of the "home" button. Its actually the feature I use most often and it would probably be more useful being placed on the homepage. Thanks for sharing.

Any service running in the background has the potential of using additional memory and battery consumption. I haven't heard if it is keeping the phone from sleeping, which would be even a more concern.

I thought that it was being pushed possibly due to fact that there was an issue with it staying in the background, so as of now I have not yet updated due to the background task.

Why would it be running in the background if it is not in use?

Let me look into this. I'll do some research on my end and try to find out some information for you.

Ugh, really? Running in the background ALL THE TIME? Contrary to what you think Telenav, I DON'T use your software every waking hour, and I DON'T want it using my precious resources. Sigh, this alone made me uninstall the update... thanks for making it simple for me.
