Stand-alone GPS tracking, Endomondo, My Tracks etc.

I posted this as a reply in another thread but it may be more appropriate here....

I had my first GPS tracking test since the update and it was mostly successful. I ran 2 miles with Ghostracer and then 2 miles with Endomondo. The GPS tracking was perfect for both runs. The GR run was first and it synced fine to my phone over cell data. When I finished the 2nd run with Endomondo it didn't transfer the run to the phone. This isn't an update issue since it has happened a few times before the update. Anyone use Endomondo and know the exact procedures to follow at the end of the run to sync perfectly each time over cell data? I've used Endomondo since November and this has happened about 4 times. Not sure what I'm doing differently when it happens. Cell signal is strong every time.

One reason I like GR is it has an option on the phone app to re-sync the last run from the watch when this happens. I wish Endomondo had that.

Does the ghost app work with Runtastic too?

Ghostracer is a standalone running/cycling tracker for wear. You can customize the screens to show whatever you prefer... time, distance, heart rate, pace, lap pace, clock, calories, bearing etc. You can link the app to Strava, Runkeeper and Smash Run to sync runs directly from the phone app. Once my runs are synced to Strava or Runkeeper I also use SyncMyTracks to sync to other services including Endomondo, Runtastic, Nike Running etc.

did you have any accuracy issues? I used the LG Health App and the distance recorded was WAY LOW (and pace - way off)?

I've had occasions when the GPS tracking had some lag during a run and didn't record a tracking point for a brief time, but overall the distance has been accurate when compared to sites like onthegomap.com over the last 4 months.

Oh and I've never used LG Health to track so I can't comment on how well it tracks.

No issues tracking after the update either. I mean there was one Endomondo fluke, but it was an isolated incident and likely not caused by the update.

Since I run in the woods, I have bad cell signal. What I usually do at the end of my runs is stop Endo on my watch, turn BT on on my cell that i leave in the car, start Endomondo on my phone, check history, wait for my run to show up including the map view, ONLY THEN close the app on my watch. Works well, but it can take a bit of driving until the sync is completed , since my cell needs a good signal to download the map.

How much battery did those 4 miles burn (and for how long was the gps on)? Thanks- I am trying to figure out whether with BT on for music and gps on during a run or hike I can get longer battery life than with my Sony SW3 (I get a max of ~4hrs with gps only and a bit less with BT on)...

Yesterday I took the watch off the charger at 4:30pm. I started my run at 5:10pm and ran 4.2 miles in 35 minutes with GPS tracking, bluetooth music, cellular turned on and paired to my phone in the car. I used ghostracer and was in always on mode. When I stopped the run the battery showed 89%. After syncing to the phone and changing my settings back to my usual setup I was at about 85%.

This can vary greatly depending on cell/GPS reception and interaction with the watch. I turn off notifications for email/social apps when I run so it's usually only texts that might come through, but I didn't have any yesterday.

Ok - so ~20% per hr with BT, gps and cell on. Not bad!

My estimate when asked previously was about 25% per hour. But like I said it can vary greatly. Sometimes I've used 30% but may have replied to texts during the run or had more notifications.

One more data point, last one unless requested :), today took the watch off the charger at 11:15am, started run at 12:30pm, had one text and one brief call to voicemail after syncing by cellular data, ran 6 miles, 56 minutes,GPS tracking with ghostracer in always on mode, bluetooth music, audio feedback for the texts, gestures on(forgot to turn off after initiating audio feedback), touched the screen about 3 times during the run to see better on a sunny day, at the end of the run battery was at 78%.

Hi there!
I'm new here.
Just one question to all watch-owners: as I read Endomondo works standalone (without cellphone).
What about Strava or Runtastic?
Thank you!

The last time I looked Strava was in beta for using the GPS from the watch in standalone mode. They may have that integrated now. When I open the app on the watch I see the what appears to be a GPS indicator but I haven't tried it recently. I haven't tried runtastic on the watch. I use ghostracer and it will automatically sync recorded runs to Strava.

EDIT: current version 4.15 for Strava does have a 'Wear' setting to use device GPS

I lose around 17% per hour with BT music streaming, GPS tracking with Endomondo, watch always on, gestures enabled. If the area i am in has bad signal reception, it can be a tad more.

However, my results differ widely from MDW1995's with cellular on: I lose a good 60% per hour then. Better than my old Gear S, but still...
What I have not yet done is disable most notifications and emails. This probably drains some extra battery, but I keep forgetting to change the settings. Wil try today.

It could also be that endomondo is more of a battery hog then ghostracer.

Have not tried those, but i can tell you that Runkeeper sucked when I tried it. Apps that have Android Wear support will have a watch icon in the description on the play store, so you can check up on your regular apps and see if there are any updates. You'd still need to check the description, because there is no separate icon for standalone AW support (Google should really come up with one, or create a standalone AW category).

Ok, I tested the gps for the last 2 weeks.
With screen off i(no BT etc) using ghostracer I get 20% decrease in battery level for 2hrs and 18min. With screen/ambient on it is almost 2x that drain.
Assuming battery drain is linear in time, I get 10+ hrs with screen, everything off but gps (location) and 5.5hrs in with screen on (ambient), and everything off but gps of course. I think that is great!

I'm assuming so, but cellular off as well? Either way that's pretty good.

The battery life on this watch is amazing! This weekend I lost about 13% per hour with screen on, cellular off, BT streaming and GPS.
