Still have missing memory? Only 2GB

OK, when I first got my TB one of the first things I noticed was the just over 2GB memory. I called VZ and HTC and they both gave me some excuse that the total 8GB is there, but it was set aside for the OS. It sounded like a bunch of BS, but I figured I would wait and see if it would be provisioned differently after I installed a custom ROM.

So I have now installs a customer ROM (Perfect Storm 1.2), and the memory still shows just over 2GB.

Does anyone know what is going on here with this missing memory? I had the DInc with the same memory and it clearly showed about 7GB free.

Something is def not right here.

Verizon Wireless told me twice that an update will "fix" the missing memory issue. My guess is that they must have known about this issue and are waiting to see whether they will either get away with it or be sued.

I followed a thread on the HTC site's support forum (which is not actually moderated by HTC) and we came to the conclusion that it's a 4 gigabyte SLC eMMC. Conventional eMMC in phones nowadays is MLC which packs more memory into the same area but is less reliable. It's still much more reliable and shock resilient than disks but SLC has half the memory, twice the read/write performance, and roughly ten times more reliable than MLC.

I don't know why they told you a fix was coming but they're wrong. This is a hardware thing, not a software thing. If they did in fact separated it into two partitions and just did some sort of RAID set up they would have advertised it and if there is a software fix it will wipe all of your internal memory. The actual spec sheet says 4GB eMMC while HTC and Verizon and every other source says it's 8GB. They made a big mistake and so far have done a decent job of keeping it quiet (or people really just don't care that much) but one thing's for sure: if you're looking for more internal memory you won't be finding it:

spec sheet: http://developer.verizon.com/downloads/OEM_PDF/HTC_Thunderbolt.pdf

HTC thread (worth a look over, lots of good sources there even if some posters got a little eccentric): Almost 70% of Internal Memory is Missing. - HTC Thunderbolt (Verizon) - Android Forums - HTC Community

Yeah, it's not 8gb internal, it's 4gb as Willis said. They basically lied to us.

Wow I think we need to make this a big issue with Verizon. They can't just get away with this in light of all the other bull**** they pull

You could do that, I guess. But, the same specsheet that verifies 4GB of internal memory also "verified" a 16GB SD card. VZW might wanna trade you. Be careful what you ask for.

I've thought all along that the reason VZW "gave" us the highly touted 32GB of external memory was because they eventually (before release) realized the error of their ways on the 8GB of internal memory ads.

they should have just changed the spec sheets to reflect this then correct? Its not that its a big deal, but I contacted VZW several times about this when I got the phone and was told that the OS takes up the rest of the memory - so according to tech support the OS takes up over 4GB of space, lol

I just feel that they need to be accountable for these kinds of things. And yes, it is FALSE ADVERTISING

I find that it is a big deal. It was advertised as 8 GB so we should get that. I don't see the OS taking up almost 6Gs. We paid for 8 gigs internal so we should be entitled to that. Anyone else with me?

I don't see how they'd be able to remedy it. They won't be doing a recall, it's not that important (something like a fatal hardware issue on a massive scale) that they'd lose that much money.

Also it'd be incredible to have a desktop operating system take up that much memory let alone a mobile one. The numbers check out for a 4GB SLC eMMC and that's what I believe until new information comes up. It's an unfortunate situation but that's what ya got. I personally like the idea of SLC and the large SD card definitely makes it up to me. Overall I'm very happy with my phone and will be holding onto it.

Yeah that's my point. My exact response to the rep was "so you expect me to believe that the OS takes up over 4gb"? Lol

Most likely I will never use all the space but the fact is that they should not advertise 8gb when there is only really 4gb of which 2.7 is available.

And my Inc had 8gb and after the OS and all apps installed I still had well over 6gb available to me for use. That's the way it should be and would be if there really was 8gb in this phone

The sales rep called HQ after not believing me and then being shocked when she opened a new TB and found out I was right. My guess is that "it will be a software fix" is the standard response Verizon Wireless HQ tells reps to parrot after a screw up. The problem is that this one is a tremendous goof. Perhaps someone thought they could make tons of money and have this one just slip under the carpet. Take a look at the phone specs on Verizon Wireless. The Thunderbolt is the ONLY one without any internal memory listed with regard to capacity (it's 8GB on the HTC website at this time.)

This is one of these "oversights" that I dont understand. Its not like VZW (or any carrier for that matter) does not get to use these phones for testing before they start selling them. When handsets go to the carrier, they are usually put in the hands of engineering, marketing, senior management, etc BEFORE they are even approved by the carrier. Then they still go through more testing before they are brought to the market.

That is why I dont understand how ANY phone gets released by a carrier with last minute software issues, or something like this memory "oversight"

Again, I think they need to have more accountability, and this goes for ANY carrier.

Why dies HTC keep doing this. Same thing happened with the G2 and I don't believe it was ever fixed on that phone and if so then the TB won't be fixed either.

well I sent a long email to VZW today, they always respond within a day. I detailed how they are misleading their customers, and that there is no way that the OS and apps take up over 4gb (like they told me when I called a few weeks ago), etc....

I will post the response here when I get it, I am interested to see what they have to say about it this time. I am sure that they have received MANY complaints on this now.

How exactly *DO* we email Verizon?

The "contact us" link (select 'I receive a monthly statement') loops me back to their stupid knowledgebase.

I bought a TB today and I'm pissed.

Why would you get in contact with Verizon let alone a Verizon Rep. HTC made the phone. And while yes Verizon sales it and advertises it, they did that based on specs/info that was given to them by HTC.

Because they sold me the phone.

Am I supposed to reach out to the worthless broken Engrish speaking Taiwanese who manufacture the phone?

Or the retailer/service provider who took my money and promoted a phone with 8GB RAM?

Exactly, the product was bought at VZW, I didnt buy it from HTC. In this case, VZW is the distributor of the product, and they are the ones that need to back up the product as the retail arm for HTC.

All I am trying to do here is get an answer. I love the phone and have no regret buying it, I just feel that this is VERY confusing and misleading to customers, and they should be accountable for it.

If the specs of the phone said Android 2.2 and you got it home and it was really 2.1 would you not have a problem with that? Or if the processor was specd at 1ghz and when you got it home found it was only 500mhz would you be ok with that?

Like I said its not a huge deal, or dealbreaker to me, but it might be to some, and those people should know the TRUE specs of the phone.

Also, like I said, VZW has this phone for MANY months in testing by MANY people in the company. For nobody to notice this during this testing make VZW just as accountable for it as HTC.

You will not solve issues going to the middle man you need to go direct to the source/MFG. IMO
