Has anyone else seen this sort of behavior?

I've been struggling with it off and on for weeks, where the phone is trucking along late afternoon and suddenly dead. Go for the charger and the charge goes from 0% to a much higher %. In this case today it went from 0% to 40% and turned right back on.
I've been into ATT and they said I have to run a factory reset to "troubleshoot" the issue before they'll warranty the unit, which is still within it's warranty period.
Any ideas out there before I take the plunge and wipe it?
