T-mobile $30 Unlimited data, Text, 100Min Voice

As of about 3:30 East / 12:30 West the Walmart website is down for scheduled maintenance. Hopefully the t-mobile updates are being added to the site.

The new 100 minute unlimited text / data plan is now live on T-Mobile's website.

is their a 4g coverage map? and what is tmobiles 3g like? i seem to get 100kb/sec max on VM where i live :\

I wish there was a dirt cheap way to check out T-Mobile's 4G coverage. I'm sure one could easily check out cell coverage by getting a basic flip and doing a minute to minute plan though. I could ask a T-Mobile associate in my area, but I doubt they'd give it to me straight on 3G, 4G, coverage, and expected speeds.

When I saw the prepaid, standard, and micro SIM cards on T-Mobile's website I thought that the non-contract SIM cards could be purchased from a retail store and easily activated over the Internet. Thanks to T-Mobile's activation codes that process can be much more difficult.

I couldn't find a specific prepaid SIM card because they were out of stock at the store. Instead I got a standard SIM card which was to be used as a replacement card for existing customers on postpaid plans. I was told it would work when activated on the Internet because this was a web only special offer as listed on the T-Mobile website.

I entered the SIM serial number on the T-Mobile activation process but could not continue because the website required an activation code. I did not have an activation code because the SIM card I purchased was intended only as a replacement. I was unable to activate at this point.

Upon returning to the store I had realized that the SIM card was completely impossible to activate because the activation codes were locked to specific SIM cards and each activation code included in the activation kit is locked specifically to a certain prepaid plan. The store did not have activation codes for this unlimited plan because it was new.

Proceeding to call T-Mobile support I then had to order a completely different prepaid SIM card activation kit for the new unlimited plan. From what I understand the activation codes are used to prevent customers from reactivating or reusing or SIM cards. Thinking realistically, Do the activation codes and/or SIM cards really need to be locked to different specific plans? When we buy boxed phones from VM, the phones aren't locked to a specific price plan. There's no $35 Beyond Talk Optimus or no $45 Beyond Talk Triumph.

It causes confusion. There should just be prepaid SIM cards with a one-time activation code and the plan should be selected during activation.

That is a bit weird, sounds similar to AT&T though.
I suspect it's to keep people from buying a cheap, cheap phone and putting the sim into an Iphone.

Well. This sounds interesting. How much is activasion fee?. Plus. I get 700kps with 2 bars on virgin (very surprising ) how fast is t-mobiles?

There's nothing to stop anyone from switching phones. I was thinking of buying a flip phone just to get an activation code until I learned that the codes were plan specific. I will use this with a mytouch 3G until eventually I'll switch to an SGS or iPhone.

At this point, anything to throw VM out the window. My speed test for today was "2110ms ping - 80 down - 264 up", what am I paying for?

3G means 3G. Not 2G not 1x and certainly not 0.5x.

I decided to try this plan yesterday, I went to walmart and bought a samsung sparq for $49.99. It came with $3.33 of airtime, so you have to buy $26.67 of airtime upon activation to get the $30 dollar plan. I have a Samsung Vibrant from my old "contract" days, after I activated the sim and plan, I just popped it in there. I have great reception in NE Florida and we do have "HSPA+" I was getting 6mbs download 1 mbs upload consistently throughout the day. That's definitely better than 300kbps down and 250kbps up that I was getting with the OV and Virgin Mobile.

The only problem that I had was that all Tmobile Prepaid plans had "Web Guard" On by default. This means you can't go to certain sites such as Facebook, Twitter or even Android Market. There is an option to turn it off online, once you set up your account, but I did receive errors trying to turn it off. I called 611 and had tech support turn it off. They told me it could take up to 24 hours for the feature to be turned off. It's been 12 hours and the feature is still on. So I'll monitor that today.

Groove IP worked great on 3G/4G, the low ping and high speed helps a lot. Ultimately, if I can get through 1 month on 100 min, I'll port my Virgin Mobile number to Google Voice.

Hope this helps some people out.

excellent news. you HAVE to buy one of tmobiles lesser phones tho? is that whats "available" for this plan? (i understand you can transfer the sim but still, seems silly)

I'll be watching this thread to hear about users experiences.

At this point though, I wouldn't even know HOW to get one of these plans. Seems confusing and convoluted. Maybe I'm just spoiled at how simple VM is to buy phones, activate, switch, etc. No hoops.

No, as I stated before I ordered a SIM card from T-Mobile. Some stores also sell the activation kit.

You can order a sim only kit online for 6.99. I just didn't want to wait.

Do you always need to buy a SIM kit or do the boxed phones on the shelves have everything one would need in the box?

Coming from Virgin Mobile and CDMA, all this SIM stuff is confusing.

That's exactly what I was thinking except none of the stores have the plan in stock also because this is a web only offer they may not sell the SIM cards with that plan.

The boxed phones have everything you would need, however each box is labeled with a different plan. So then the flip phones aren't going to have 5 GB of data.
