temp root for wifi tether?

Is it possible? I know I did it in the past with my EVO Shift.
wifi hot spot is the only reason I would want to root.. I dont use it often, but there are times (more often than you think) that my Sprint phone has service and my VZW wireless air card (provided by employer) doesnt have signal.
Its good to have in a pinch!
