The HTC One has kind of saved the mobile market...

Kinda what I was alluding to earlier.

Samsung: Galaxy S4 sales to hit 10 million next week | Mobile - CNET News

Samsung's Galaxy S4 is on pace to easily surpass its predecessor's sales record, Samsung Electronics co-CEO Shin Jong-kyun said Thursday in an interview.
Speaking to the Korea Times, the co-CEO said that Samsung's Galaxy S4 will sell through 10 million units next week, making it the fastest-selling smartphone in the company's history. Shin told the Korea Times that the Galaxy S3 took 50 days to pass the 10 million sales mark. The Galaxy S4 will hit that level less than a month since its launch.
The Galaxy S4 is the most feature-packed smartphone Samsung has launched yet. It comes with a 5-inch display, a 13-megapixel camera, and 4G LTE service, along with a host of innovative software features. In her review of the Galaxy S4, CNET's Jessica Dolcourt gave the phone 4.5 stars out of a possible five, saying that the handset "is the top choice for anyone looking for a big-screen, do-everything smartphone."

They aren't losing any ground, from the looks of it they're actually gaining it. Again, the One is a great phone, but you should probably just let it be that and not think much about the sales aspect.

I can't believe anyone read the op and actually thought they implied that Android was dying and needed saving.

Just me but how I read it was phones like the HTC One among others are somewhat needed just to keep a bit of balance with Samsung.

With Samsungs dominance in Android is nice to have options like the HTC One, Optimus and so on

Imaging this (for giggles) apple making an android phone or Samsung or htc making a iPhone variant. Would be fantastic for competition

The thing is, having the option doesn't really mean much if people aren't buying them. I mean, people are acting as if having the HTC option is new. When there was the Galaxy S there were the Evo type variants. When there was the Galaxy S2 there was the Evo 3D/other carrier varients. When there was the Galaxy S3 there was the Evo LTE/other carrier varients. With the Galaxy S4 there's the One....the option has always been there. Yet somehow Samsung keeps gaining and HTC keeps losing no matter how good of a product it is. That's the real issue, not just simply having the option. If you can't keep up with sales that options isn't going to exist for long....that's something HTC i'm sure is sweating about at the moment. They went from excellent sales with the initial Evo to Samsung nearly cornering the market 3 years later.

:)

While the One is a nice phone, the smartphone "war" only has two main players - Samsung and Apple.

But if you remember recent history, that wasn't always the case. At one point it was Apple or....nobody. Samsung was busy turning out dumb phones and weak efforts like the Instinct. Since that time, but only in the last few years, Samsung has stepped up it's game. At one time, even Apple did not exist. Point being, things change...out of nothing comes something. HTC is on to something with the One. The buzz is there. The reviews are there. But yeah, the proper marketing is not..that's the real problem. But, if nothing else, HTC has shown there can be a nicely built Android device. Something that draws iPhone users in. Something different. Not the usual cheap looking plastic that we have dealt with all along. And finally something with better speakers too. It's definitely notable and not at all like the HTC devices of the past. Will that be enough? Time will tell.

You are right things change, HTC has not changed. They need marketing.

Sure things change. It wasn't always Apple vs. Samsung.

But sadly, the HTC One isn't some sort of savior that'll let HTC play with the two biggest players.

Personally, I don't see any buzz with the One. In my circles, none of the non-phone geeks know about or care for it. Still, if you're seeing the buzz, I can't dismiss that.

For HTC to be a supposed savior, it needs to break through the Apple-Samsung dominance. Just like Apple blew away the Windows Mobile and BlackBerry phones. Just like Samsung broke through to be in the same conversation as Apple.

Units shipped/sold plus marketing spend will tell us if HTC can be a player.

This ^^^ The only time i believe Htc 1up'd Sammy was between the OG EVO and The OG Galaxy s. The Galaxy s never really interested me but ths Og Evo was something awesome. But Sammy quickly learned from their mistakes and leaped over htc. Ill still be getting the One despite theres the s4.:D

The marketing may not be any better, but you can't say nothing has changed. Clearly they have produced a better device and taken some risk with their latest effort that they didn't before.

Personally I think if/when Intel releases their Windows phone we might see some real competition. Because Intel doesn't do anything half-heartedly. I wouldn't be shocked if we finally see a real x86 line of tablets and phones to actually be realized.

In my opinion, Samsung didn't have a worthy product until the Nexus and Galaxy 2, which is one of the best smartphones ever produced. HTC could be on that same path with the excellent One. Only time will tell, but they desperately need a marketing breakthrough that connects with people.

Still, we should be thinking BIG picture and stop fighting with each other. Android is kicking some serious ***.

I'm sorry but the HTC one has no hype outside of tech enthusiasts. At my job they always ask me what phone is that when they see my one. They however all went and bought the s4 because it's a brand they know.

Well that's nice that ppl at ur work like Samsung. Have you seen the commercials they play all the internet ads. Now how many have you seen that are for other phone brands other than apple Samsung and the occasional wp8.

Not if it's a windows phone we won't

I literally had NO idea. Of course I felt some wouldn't agree with my opinion, but damn aha.

Don't you know the Android community has long since degenerated in tribalism. This is the human condition.

Once Android started to well and truly exceed iOS in market share, new rivalries had to be found.

It is undoubtedly their best effort yet. Unfortunately, their best just isn't on the same level as an Apple or Samsung. Doesn't mean you should enjoy the device any less. I certainly don't.

It's good enough for me to give it a second go-round after enjoying the S4. The Stealth Black version is just, in my opinion, the best looking phone I've ever seen.

People that think there is some sort of buzz or groundswell favoring the One are spending too much in these forums and reading reviews. In reality the Galaxy has become synonymous with Android and the only real iPhone alternative when you look around and see what people are carrying. HTC has curiously aimed the features and marketing of the One at the demographic with the least purchasing power and that is the early 20 somethings who have a high unemployment rate and lots of debt. Interesting and risky choice on their part.

Wow way to point out your view on this. So how many ppl do u know that are unemployed and own a HTC one compared to an iPhone 5 or s4? I dont understand how purchasing power comes I to play either when any one can get a phone for $200. If you want to point out demographics look in craigslist was see what phone is for sale or trade the most.

Also galaxy is synonymous with android but so is the evo brand.

I don't think any phone not carried by vzw has any significant effect on the American market.

Just look at the respective commercials. HTC shows a bunch of club going 20 somethings partying whereas Samsung shows grown adults at a graduation party. Samsung aims for the fat part of of the market and HTC aims at a niche.

I also question that anyone associates Evo with android.

Do you guys even flash custom roms? HTC is the only one that will unlock your boot loader for you without even charging for this service. NEVER b4 has a phone manufacturer done this. plus these quad core phones are only as good as the OS thats on them. benchmarking scores mean squat in the real world and I love the 3d effect of my evo3d, it kicks ****. And most people are trendy and buy out of popularity more than functionality. And you guys show your ignorance as to the role the carriers play in the functionality of smartphones. ( ill correct myself buying saying that these are actually PPC * pocket personal computers * smartphones dont have touch screens. And people buy iphones and samsungs because they dont know anything at all about the hardware which is in these devices. Carriers restrict functionality of these phones by picking what features they what to pay for when they have the Branded rom created for them (example is i had the htc mogul which had gps capability, but it was not enabled because sprint didnt want to offer it as an option, but when it was learned that the htc kaiser "which has the same chipset as the mogul" had gps enable because verizon paid for it in thier branded OS, i was able to port the drivers from the verizon rom and enabled the gps function on the mogul. three version of the HTC One have the same exact chipset as the EVO 3d, You guys dont mention anything about the hardware in these phones so how is it that u guys think that those I phones and samsungs are better. I bet you guys have know clue as to what processor, chipset , type of memory that are on these phones. Its the lies in the marketing that people buy hook line and sinker. you guys probably think 4g is faster than 3g, its not, you have 2 dump trucks that go 5 miles an hour but 1 has a 1/2 ton bed and the other has a full ton bed, one can carry more than the other but they travel at the same speed. its is flat out lying by carriers to try and justify the ridiculous prices they charge for 4g connection, So dont think that a phone is better than another just because its sales more, that is dumb! I can tell what is a good phone buy its hardware, not its looks or how much it has sold. The carriers love people like you who dont have a clue as to whats under the hood, you think quadcore is better because theres 4 of them, but you dont know is that only 5 percent of the usage does all 4 cores actually run, most of the time 2 of the cores dont even run because they are not needed and if they did ur battery life would be about 20min from a full charge to dead, so what is it that u think makes a good phone?? ive said enough, i just get tired of people talkinhg like they know whats up. Have good day

Well of COURSE you are going to see more people carrying Samsung these days as there are all those variety of Galaxy models floating around out there. The HTC is what..a few months old? Most people I know still have at most, a SG3. So if all those earlier models of Galaxy's didn't exist it would be a more even playfield. But since it's not, of course there won't be many Ones out there yet. That's just simple math and logic. As I pointed out earlier, Samsung was once at that place too, and not that long ago. Things change.

Okay real talk here did anyone really expect otherwise ? Samsung could've put out an empty shell and change the name and they would outsell their predecessor people are buying off of brand loyalty and following trends. HTC dropped the ball 3yrs ago and its going to take at least 3-4 phones great ones at that in order to gain that foot hole like Samsung has right now...Say what you want Samsung was going to start pulling off an apple but with HTC new found vigor that will be a different story...Now HTC needs marketing like a man in the dessert needing water...and then just raising the bar on build and quality with each phone....
