The HTC One will be a hit, pass Galaxy S4 for ONE reason..

It's all in the marketing. I've seen one add for the One on TV so far and I believe that was just an inclusion in a carriers normal add here in Canada. If HTC flooded the airwaves and internet with adds the same way Samsung does people would truly see that HTC makes superior devices. The average consumer isn't going to be on sites like android central and many won't even bother checking for reviews. I hear it from customers all the time about how Samsung makes great hardware and is taking market share away from Apple, it's all image though. I show the One and reviews of it to people and most of the time their jaws drop and they are amazed by the difference in quality. I helped a customer with an S3 the other day and it felt like holding a damn toy in my hand, that is not how a flagship phone should feel.

The emphasis should be on Specifications, Build Quality, Software, Extra features in that order. Samsung seems to have a tie between Software and specifications and only add in extra features in terms of software. Build quality is taking a back seat for them so they can offer removable batteries and micro sd expansion. Now why can't they build an aluminum body phone that has a removal back, it doesn't have to be unibody to be high quality. Another case of quantity over quality.

I have to agree with teknha... The Samsung S4 might be TOO large of a phone for me. I'm looking forward to trading my EVO 4G for an HTC One. It looks very sharp, and will only be slightly larger than my phone now (I think).

Let's go HTC One! :):):):):):p:p:p:p:p

Just want to point out that although the S4 has a 5 inch screen the S4 is physically about the exact same size as the S3 and even a tiny bit thinner.

I'm happy that android phones are finally being talked about and being compared to each other and not just against iPhones. This is good, because it means that android has finally got the attention of the consumers.

I agree, it's like Android has finally come into it's own instead of being looked down on by big daddy apple.

I think Android passed iOS in terms of total UX with ICS 4.0... it just takes a year or so for the general public to realize it. Now with JB, Apple has a lot of ground to make up to become competitive again in UX. They will still sell like crazy because they make good devices, but if you want "the best device out there", in my opinion, the iPhone 5 is barely in the top 10 right now.

I pray to God no one says this in this thread. Hands down the most idiotic argument to make when comparing Samsung to HTC in terms of why Samsung has better sales. The average consumer does NOT care about a SD card or removable battery. I don't know why ppl try to relate their needs with what feel are the needs of everyone else. Why does the iPhone sell?? Plus, the One comes in 32gb and 64gb. I don't know why ppl wanna carry 1000 songs, 5 movies, and a whole season of Seinfeld on their phone at one time. Its a phone..

I'm an average consumer and having the ability to quickly swap a drained battery for a fresh one is of huge importance to me. I don't care about the SD card issue for the very reason you stated but both my son and I (we have the same phone) absolutely have depended on quick battery swaps innumerable times. We do what we want free from a cable to the wall or external battery charger. And when we need to swap out, it takes less than a minute to be back up and running again. Of course, we plug in overnight or while in the car but otherwise, we have a battery easily available to us at a moment's notice.

My wife, on the other hand, has an iPhone and laments constantly about having to be stuck to a wall outlet to charge her phone when it typically is very convenient for her to do so. She also doesn't care about the SD card thing but she is very eager to upgrade to an Android with a removable battery. She's commented a number of times how envious she is about our ability to swap-and-go while she cannot. Why did she get an iPhone? Because she didn't know any better at the time, was a newbie to smartphones and appreciated iOS's "simplicity" and thought it was "hip" to have an iPhone. because it was a supposedly superior and reliable device. Apple's marketing is so good, it convinces potential buyers that its weaknesses are actually good things. Samsung, HTC and the others are no different in their intent to do the same, they are simply not as good as the BS as Apple is (yet).

So while I haven't seen a statistical analysis performed on user surveys about removable batteries, I would suggest that there is a certain segment of users out there that definitely appreciate (and require) removable batteries.

Back to the original post, while I would like to see HTC make up some ground against the S4, and think that the S4 is not particularly inspiring, the trends are not encouraging:

I really have no problem with people liking Samsung, but they're starting to be samsheep. The very same as the hipsters that lust over Apple. What bothers me more is that Samsung had the choice of several mock ups for the gs4. And inexplicably picked the absolute cheapest one for their flagship device. Why do people not see that they don't care about them, only profit margins. It's becoming apparent they are comfortable in their situation and feel they can do what they want and people will take it. This is sad for the consumer, because this will force other companies to do the same. If kia and Cadillac were the same price, would you buy a kia? I would bet you wouldn't, you'd buy the Cadillac. Force Samsung to conform to quality instead of forcing the smaller companies to cheaper and cheaper build quality. Then us, the people spending our hard earned money will win.

I believe the HTC One will be a better seller then their previous phones but it won't dethrone GS4. When the HTC One was unveiled it was like the Blackberry Z10 with my crowd, nobody mentioned them. The GS4 was unveiled and everyone's talking about it even one of my brothers that rarely calls me about anything, called to about it for a half hour. Most forums I read there's a lot ex HTC owner vowing to never own another. I had six HTC phones without issue but I went to the dark side because I wanted the Note 2 and now I can't go smaller.

I sadly agree, Samsung will still sell more. Rome wasn't built in a day, and it really doesn't matter if Samsung or HTC are on top. Just for all android fans sake, the others need to be in the ballpark. If not, we'll have Apple all over again. And things will be dictated by the way Samsung does them, cheap.

The HTC One even if it wanted to sell well wont. With a 200 minute die cut process for each phone (not including assembly) that's one of the longest production times for any phone I've ever seen. They can't keep up with even a launch, do you think they can produce enough if this thing becomes a hit? With HTC betting everything on this phone that they can't produce even for the launch it does not look good for HTC Hopefully they can pull together their production and some how speed it up.

Joe Blow consumer absolutely does care about removable battery and expandable sd card. I sell these things for a living and can't even count how many times a customer is down to the GS3 or the One X or other non swappable model and ask about the battery, and upon hearing it's not remove able go with the Galaxy. Only the iPhone is chosen regardless.

I spent 4 days unexpectedly in the hospital recently, and let me tell you having that spare battery in my purse was a godsend.

You underestimate modern production. Apple can pull it off, and HTC uses a lot of the same suppliers. If apple can turn out 100 million iPhone 5s in a year, HTC can produce several million Ones.

No, they don't. Your anecdotal evidence isn't proof of anything.

I agree that the case the one sits in is beautiful. No doubt about it. Durable? The jury is still out there, but if people dont drop them and case em up, I bet they stay relatively scratch dent free.

Looking at the bigger picture and taking this subject into context, people that clamor samsung is junk because they use plastic are shortsighted imo. I almost want to buy a s4 and one and just do the drop test all ready. The plastic in the s3 and note 2 has held up well for most of the world. It is the same thing as me saying the one is a tin can. Fact is, htc has one of the best phone designs I have ever seen. But I am also not ignorant enough to run around AC claming samsung plastic is junk every second I get a chance to. I give the case win to htc. I give the software win to samsung. The software in the s4 is innovative to the tune of another apple crushing victory imo.

Can I load 4.2.2 TW on a one with a 2600mah removable battery and sd card slot? Because then I would have almost the perfect phone.

There isn't anything innovative in the S4. Everything has already been done before, and Samsung was even beaten to the punch by lg for some of their gimmicks.

I'll disagree with that. Software should not be lower than build quality. When you use your phone you interact so much with software that it can't take a backseat to build quality. Even specs are just used to add to the software experience. Most people don't know or care how much ram their phone has as long as it works. I just gave up my evo (great build quality) for a sammy because sense was the worst thing to ever happen to that phone. That and quality issues and horrible support from HTC.

At the end of the day though to succeed you really have to do everything good enough. Sammy may not have the best build quality but they don't really fail in any category. Their build quality is good enough that it's not a problem for most people. Love it or hate it I think tw is way less bloated than sense and it gets the job done. The phones have good specs and they do a good job of marketing all of the extra features that they add even if most are very gimmicky.

With HTC phones it always seams there's a weak point and they just don't get their act together and that's why you hear more and more people moving away from them. They will pick up a lot of new people with the "one" but they better not screw it up. If that phone doesn't get adequate support or sense 5 is a bust then HTC will be in a world of hurt

What's so terribly innovative about the "one"? It just feels more innovative because it came from HTC and HTC hasn't put out anything recently to get this much attention. "more of the same" is a good thing for Samsung, they're in a position that if it ain't broke don't fix it . The most popular argument here for the one over the s4 is that it isn't a Samsung product because the HTC fanboys think sammy is evil.

You're right. Clearly all those consumers specifically stating they are going with one over the other because they want to be able to swap a battery is patently untrue, and you speak for all. How silly of me, oh all knowing one.

I'm one salesperson who has experienced it on numerous occasions. I doubt I'm an anomaly. But you clearly are some all powerful, all knowing person who speaks for all. Fact remains the iPhone is the one exception to the rule of what I've experienced. I'm sorry if that's inconvenient to your little fanboy worldview.

The 200 million iPhones in the wild prove you wrong. Your anecdotal evidence means nothing when the market shows so clearly that consumers as a whole just don't care.
