The kinda-official LG G4 bootloop thread

I hadn't heard anything after 7 days so I called the hotline to check the status and the rep said it was on its way back to me. Great! So it is all fixed and ready to go? "Ahh, yeah, all set!" I thought cool, dodged a bullet. Then I get the device back with a note saying 'No Repair: Reason Code - Liquid Trigger'. The guy I bought it from had affixed a fake liquid trigger by the battery, the one by the motherboard was tripped. >= (
So, they won't repair it just because someone put a void water-damage evidence sticker, even though the bootloop issue is actually quite apparent now?

Wow. And just 2 days ago, I found out that LG refused to repair a H815 that suffered from the bootloop as it was an international model.

I'm actually kinda baffled.

Yeah, they never called, no email. Just shipped it back with the status of "unrepairable" due to the water damage. On top of that, they took off my Tempered Glass screen protector!!! I paid $25 for that...why would they take it off if they weren't even going to attempt to repair the device?! I'm calling LG on Monday and I want them to at least reimburse me for the screen protector. There is no reason that needed to be removed especially after doing zero work to the device. Oh...and it is still boot-looping.

Wow. So, what do you plan to do?

I've recently heard about this "bootloop" issue.
Well I've got the international (uk) h815 model and my serial number is 507. Ive had the phone for more than a month without any issues. I shouldn't have any issues in the future...right?

Also has anyone from the UK experienced these issues?

Hi all. Im from the uk i have the G4 im on vodafone and i am experiencing the same bootloop problems. I have removed all apps and even the stock apps that come bundled with the device and it still goes into bootloop. To get out of the bootloop issue i remove the battery then re insert it press volume down and power key together. As soon as you see the lg logo release the power key quickly once and then depress again and hold until you see the factory reset option. Once you select factory reset ( you will lose all your data but In a bootloop you already have) and the reset has completed you can then set the phone up and it works fine for however long it chooses to (i noticed about 2 to 3 weeks) then it goes back into bootloop again. I have done this several times now as i am trying to see if there is a pattern but I'm getting fed up losing all my settings and apps now and it seems to bootloop more when i mess around with the wireless connecttion settings or Bluetooth settings. Its difficult to say 100% what is causing my phone to do this but what i can say 100% my G4 has a fault that is causeing it to go into a bootloop. If it was a hardware fault then resetting the phone straight after it going into bootloop would not allow the phone to work straight away for another 2 to 3 works and then repeat the procedure and it works again for another 2 to 3 weeks. Removing all the apps from the device still makes no difference the same happens and if you repeat the reset process straight after bootloop then again it works for several weeks no issues. I will be speaking to vodaphone today to about getting a replacement phone as i can't spend anymore time messing about trying to find a pattern. Hope this helps someone or maybe even some insight for LG.

Cheers

Have you tried the freezer trick before resetting to see if it works then? The well known bootloop issue is in fact a hardware problem, but that's not to say you couldn't have a different problem with similar symptoms. Many things could cause a bootloop.

If the freezer trick works for you (and for some, it doesn't work because the phone is too far gone), then I suspect the reset you're doing is a little misleading. The common cause is something like a bad solder joint that opens when the phone gets warm and starts to expand. That's why the freezer trick works, because it keeps the thermal expansion down. In your case, a reset phone will naturally run cooler than one with tons of apps installed. As you build up your apps and start having them run more often, then your phone will start to work harder and eventually cause the thermal expansion to open up the bad solder joint.

Again, this is just some educated guessing on my part, in that either you're having a different issue or your way of temporarily fixing it has lead you down the wrong path.

Is his problem actually THE boot loop? I didn't think you could even reach the option to factory reset. I couldn't when my G4 went into boot loop.

In my case, if the phone was already warm, it would loop immediately and not let me get to the reset option. When put in the freezer, I could use it normally. I think it just depends on how bad the problem solder joint or whatever is.

Oddly enough when it was time to reset before sending back, I didn't think to freeze it first simply to save time. I accessed the recovery menu and selected to reset. As soon as it started the reset process, it started to loop. I froze it to try resetting again, only to find out it was already reset. Not sure how it reset without going through the full process, but didn't matter to me at that point.

I guess it's different for everyone. Mine was straight up fried. No saving anything.

In my case I could after the first attempt at repairing the phone by LG. Resetting it did not fix it or helped in any way, so it was sent back for a second and so far final repair.

NOT TRUE! If your G4 experiences the boot loop issue you have NOT lost all your data. Perhaps you are experiencing a different issue, but the true boot loop issue is a hardware problem and cannot be resolved by software changes.

Many people report varying levels if success with the freezer trick others, like myself, would occasionally get it to run for 30 minutes or so before it would reboot.

If you can get to the point of navigating to the factory data reset option, you have booted your phone and could copy pics, etc. to an SD card.

If you you want to try to copy data to an SD card or something, I put mine in the freezer for about 5 minutes and it would boot long enough for me to get my pictures, downloads and a little more stuff off onto the micro SD. If it freezes and doesn't give you enough time keep it in the freezer longer. Try to work in the freezer too. The colder the better! And it really works I'm not lying. Mine was so cold there was ice if that helps!

So I just joined the club ☹️☹️☹️. Was on my laptop this morning and turned to my phone...boot loop no warning. Managed to backup my data by putting my phone in the freezer alongside my laptop (after about 10 attempts). Currently my phone is in the freezer in an attempted factory reset. This is ridiculous and most likely the last of many issues I've had with this phone. I've had it for nearly nine months and no longer live in the UK where I bought it since I'm done with uni. Used all my previous phones for at least 2.5 years so safe to say this is my first and last LG purchase.

I don't understand why people are not sending their photos to the SD card in the first place. Why would you not do that? Or use Google Photos, which instantly sends the photo to your Google account.

My G4 bricked yesterday, 1 year and 3 days in, SN begins with 505. Streaming Amazon Music at the time. VZW is sending a "new" one. Hope it will last at least as long.

I use SD for photos or whatever I can.
Every pic I take goes to Google Drive.

The truth is if my G4 craps I really don't keep critical items on the phones internal memory.
I can see how loss would be a large problem for those who depend heavily on their phone for business or any other important activity.

Oh yeah mine's a 505 and I bought it pre owned (phone was manufactured in May and I got it nine months ago so it was still like new). Does anyone know how I could check the warranty on the phone?? Because I want to assume the phone wasn't bought by the previous owner immediately after manufacture.

Did you put the phone in with the battery inside of it? And how cold was your freezer?

Took out the battery although I tossed that in the freezer too. Not sure how cold my freezer was exactly but I'd think if your freezer is any good then it should work...maybe keep the phone in there for a couple of hours or so
