The Notch... it's Big... it's Black... it's Bold... it's Beautiful

What we need is a low slung "phone" holster like Wyatt Earp had. The phone would be handy, protected and we could practice The Pixel Quick Draw move. The pictured rifle would be an add on accessory -

As much as I understand anyone's dislikes for the notch I'm convinced in the end it doesn't matter all the much. But hey...we are all free to buy or not buy the things we dislike.

True. If the headlines didn't mention the notch half could care less.

How the heck can a app or anything hide that notch.
Give me a break !

Google's Bread ain't Dun sticking a big notch on a phone.

Yeah this. I don't understand how anyone can "hide" the notch.

The only thing I can think of is the SW will add more notch to cover the top of the screen so it makes it look like a huge bezel and no notch.

If that's the case then that's pretty freaking stupid IMO.

Yes the software will black out the notch area and just put notifications to the left and right of the notch...I hope.

Basically the purpose of the notch is to move notifications out of the usable content space, thereby giving the user more usable space.

I see it exactly the opposite. A notch appears to cut -into- the useable space rather than giving more, thereby making an unsightly shape which is not even (meaning it's not a perfect rectangle) and therefore taking away from my viewing experience.

This isn't a question of opinion, it's actually just a mathematical statement. The Pixel 3 XL, is objectively giving users more screen real estate than the Pixel 2 XL, which shares its dimensions almost identically. Though it is a small amount, it is still a larger value than the Pixel 2 XL.

Here's the math: In the case of the Pixel 3 XL, it is the Pixel 2 XL display only extended an additional approx. 1/3" taller, then about 38% of that additional area is taken up by the notch, while the remaining 62% is additional screen area that is now dedicated to the notifications. Notifications currently take up approximately 50 pixels in height, which is about 1.7% of the height of the Pixel 2 XL display and because of how multiplication works, it is also about 1.7% of the total screen area of the Pixel 2 XL. The Pixel 2 XL has an area of 4,147,200 pixels, 72,000 of which are devoted to the notification bar, leaving an effective area of 4,075,200 for content and the navigation bar combined. The new Pixel 3 XL display, by moving those notifications out of that part of the display, is returning all 72,000 pixels to the usable area, meaning that the usable space is now the entirety of the 4,147,200 pixels, an increase of 1.8%.

TLDR - The Pixel 3 XL, by using the taller display and the notch, is giving users a 1.8% increase in usable display area.

BUT it IS an opinion. All math aside, Likeability of notches is subjective.

What other screen have you ever seen that cuts a piece out of a perfect rectangle?

It is most people opinions that the notch creates a jarring viewing experience effectively rendering the extra space moot.

For me at least, that "extra space" does not in any way make up for the unsightlyness of the added intrusion of the notch.

It might push the notifications down. I hope it doesn't do that but I won't use that feature if does.

Yes whether or not you like it is an opinion. What I was saying is that there is a purpose and that purpose is being successfully fulfilled. The purpose is more screen real estate and that is definitely happening because the new screen area is greater than the old, both in terms of total area and usable area. Whether or not anyone appreciates the aesthetic aspects of it is a separate issue. And whether or not the benefits outweigh the poor aesthetics, for those who dislike it, is also an opinion. I'm not saying you should like or dislike it. I'm saying that they did it for a reason.

There are other brands doing the same thing.

Yep and I won't buy one of those either.

This whole discussion is weird and funny to me because all of my friends with iPhone 10's say they don't even notice the notch. One even asked what I was talking about lol.

Granted that's iPhone users... Kinda hard to trust most of them on any OS related question honestly.

Gotcha! I may have misunderstood what you were saying at first. I'm on board now.

Still hate the notch though whether I have a good reason to or not, it's my money and opinion to use as I choose.

Not many choices out there without the notch ..

I don't like to generalize people who pick a particular OS. I'm sure they don't all like the notch. My only objection to the notch was when I first saw it. Now, it doesn't matter to me one bit but if it did I would just buy something else.
