Samsung keeps tweeting that the delay in release of 2.2 from 2.1 is due to the complexity/unique funtionality. But is that saying that the software is different and that's where the problem is, or just the upgrade in general? And if so, is their a big software change from 2.2 to 2.3?

At this point, I think the only things that could have caused the delay are: (1) incompetence or (2) malevolence. I suppose it could be a combination of the two.

I mean, DK28 doesn't work any worse (or better, really) than the current 2.1 release does on the Epic.

Yeah I ran DK28 for a day before going to a custom rom and I saw no problems other than a gps lock issue, which I was able to fix. In fact I thought it rean great.

The only issue I am having with DK28 is sometimes WiFi won't turn on, it just says error. A reboot fixes it....

I'm not sure what exactly to think of delay at this point, and I've been doing a lot of defending of Samsung on this issue the past month or so. I continue to believe at least half of the blame is on the carriers (or at least is the case with that maintenance update on the Fascinate with Verizon). Regardless, it is now getting a little ridiculous.

This was my biggest (possibly my only - I can't think of any others right this second) issue with DK28 (I've recently downgraded back to 2.1). Now, if this were really the only issue with DK28, it should have been a fairly quick fix ... but if found during testing, it should not have been released until this issue was fixed. However, giving Samsung the benefit of the doubt ...

Perhaps they've seen other bugs just as or worse than this that no one else has really run into? I dunno ... it is dragging on a bit longer than it should have.

That being said - I really didn't see a whole lot more in 2.2 on the Epic than in 2.1.

Samsung!!!!

You have no problem at all with developing new things like new phones......new tablets......new google tv's...... It sure would be fantastic if you could support what you already have before you cook up something else..... You have a pretty freakin bad case of ADD!!!! I just had to get this off my chest. My wife would think I'm nuts if I went off and said this to her.....so I'm saying it to the people that would "get it"!

Thanks for listening!!!

Well everyone is charged up about this, and being on this inside i know that you are yelling at two different departments. Samsung , like LG and other companies are split up into different groups for instance LG has LG mobile and LG Display, LG mobile is out with this new phone with a NOVA display while LG has a seperate division(LGD) that is spending millions on OLED displays. so LG mobile is talking about how great NOVA is, meanwhile they are going to be moving into OLED's in the future. So basically LG is the head that doesnt know what its limbs are doing.

Meanwhile the same princple applies for Samsung there is Samsung mobile and SMD (I'm using their display divisions as an example cause im most familiar with displays) both going in directions that the other doesnt know about.

So what im saying is that although Samsung has a mobile design team they also have a seperate team that is in charge of software updates while another departmeant concentrates on the newest iteration of the software.

Also chances are that these show display models have not gone through the process of the fully bloated verizon version of their software so it was easy to apply froyo on it and it will probably need some time to add the bloatware to it.

But in the end, I get what your saying lol

As I've said before, I blame Google for this as much as anyone. They have allowed this fragmentation to get out of hand. Stricter limits and upgrade windows need to be applied for this free OS they're providing to all of these carriers and handset manufacturers.

Might be impossible when the os is open source

I'm not sure about the specifics of how they are distributing it, but I think they can place some limitations through licensing on the commercial use of the code?

Far from an expert on this, of course.

The thing is they give android away for free so how and why would google put so much control on it

Google already restricts acccess to the market and use of the google name in advertising. If they wanted to they could end fragmentation in products from big manufacturers overnight.

Google is in a tight spot with that. If they want to keep their open source concept (and not piss off AOSP), there's not much they can do.
