Re: Here's the truth behind the Nexus "delays"
Appreciate the post, for sure. Though I feel the rep is just giving you their take on it ... which, honestly, I'd put as much stock in as any of our random conjectures on this forum.
For one thing, if VZW had released by now they could have had Nexii in the hands of at least some customers while they worked to back-order the rest. Satisfying even 20% of demand would have been better than the current 0%.
Moreover, the remaining 80% would've been happier with VZW on the whole simply because they would have been communicating with us. The complete radio silence has one of the major complaints with this launch.
And second, they only have about two weeks left in order to meet their self-imposed "by the end of 2011" deadline. If VZW doesn't have sufficient phones ready to go by now, I don't see them conjuring them up within the next two weeks.
By all accounts, many VZW reps weren't really aware of the GN upon enquiries from all of us until just a couple of weeks ago, when VZW training and promo material began arriving at stores. Which means that, at best, they only really have a couple of weeks' worth of enquiry data recorded and only another couple of weeks produce sufficient phones to satisfy it. At best it's only going to provide a rough estimate of the people who are already aware anyway, not taking into account people who might be "wowed" enough to want a GN after seeing them on display.
I dunno ... just feels like that would have been a very ham-fisted way to approach initial supply/demand. They would've done better to offer a long preorder period: better data, zero obligation to satisfy demand immediately on announcement, better PR overall.
