The X is not an iPhone killer, it's a Blackberry killer

So from everything I've heard, there are a crazy amount of people jumping ship from blackberry to use the droid x. Of course I understand that the iPhone is not on verizon, but I'm sure RIM is very nervous about this new handset taking many loyal users like myself.

Raw stats say if you're upgrading a smartphone there's a 47% chance it's a Blackberry. Add Verizon into the equation and it's much higher. However no phone will kill another, each has its own fans and my Tour isn't going anywhere.

I love Blackberry, been using one off and on for years. The reason Blackberry is falling behind Android is their unevolving OS. The reason Blackberry still has a near 50% share is its unevolving OS. Its both a pro and a con for them.

For younger, more techy users, like I imagine most Android users are, Blackberry simply fell behind the times to a newer, fancier, flashier system. For older, professional users, Android is too much for them, and they stick with an easier to use, less flashy Blackberry.

RIM is locked in with the professional crowd. They are loosing with the young tech crowd. I think their place is secure, just not ideal for all.

When the Droid came out, the forums were flooded with Verizon Blackberry converts. It happened again when the Incredible came out. Then the EVO came out and the forums were flooded with Sprint Palm users. It's kind of fun watching you guys as you flip over, because both groups have specific things they ask when the convert. The Blackberry users, in particular, immediately want to know how to do task management, and use the phrase "battery pull" a lot when talking about their BB platform. I don't think I've ever done a battery pull since I've been on Android. Did they several times a day though when I had Window Mobile and the old Palm based Treo phones.

Theres really no Phone Killer, but with phones like the DX it definitely makes some phone (*cough* BB) look like something from the ice ages.

The Droid X has essentially killed the chances of me going back to the BlackBerry platform. I was an avid BlackBerry fan but it got stale. Yes, I am in the demographic for the cool things (I'm 18), but I like y phone to work, not require me to remove my case to remove the battery, and for it to not freeze up when closing an application. Also, being a CS major helps with rounding out the geek factor.

I have read some of these studies and have yet to see one with actual statistical merit. Just my 2cents.

BB is a messaging and calendar powerhouse. It is fast, efficient, and integrated. Even facebook, twitter, and myspace have excellent integration components for the BB.

Android has many pros as well and is what I am currently using. I think there is a market for both devices and I personally enjoy both platforms. Admittedly .. I am excited to see what RIM does with OS 6.

I somewhat miss my blackberry. Namely the keyboard. But the simple texting was also the best.

I wish these two phones could fuse together.

To be honest, I don't think anything is a "killer" There are too many devices out there that will have a niche market.

If the iphone was called the palm_XXX it would not be selling like it has..... That is just my opinion.

I also think that apple now is playing catch up to the Incredible, Evo, X and D2...

If the next os for apple has widgets, look out!

I think I mis-read your statement as saying that 47% chance people are leaving BB for other platforms ... which is what I was disagreeing with it.

You are saying that there is a 47% chance a person will adopt a blackberry? That I would believe.

The Blackberry is going back to being an enterprise work phone platform. Why you would really want one as a gadget-geek is beyond me; they do what they are supposed to do but they are imminently unexceptional compared to any of the more trendy smartphones. It's nice having a built in messenger that works quickly and doesn't involve an expense (as does SMS) but it's only really an advantage if you are around other BB users. The only real use case for them is when you have a critical mass of users (like a workplace) and you want them to actually get **** done instead of spending all day playing with task killers, facebook widgets, battery monitors, signal strength apps, and loading hacked ROMs so they can watch HULU on their phone.

To any major corporation, even the Iphone with it's 4 years of popularity is still just barely on the radar of acceptance as a productivity device; it takes many years to change a major business platform. It will be a long time before Blackberry is displaced from that world, if ever.

My BB was difficult to use. Difficult to download and keep current my address book. It slowed my computer and was a giant mess. It froze all the time.

I never wanted an iPhone because I would NEVER go to AT&T. My X is a great alternative. I might actually keep this phone for a long time.

For years blackberries where the smartphones to get if you were going to get one. Then the iPhone came out and there were a lot of converts but not nearly as many as the converts on Android and the answer is simple. The iPhone is only on one carrier here in the US. So for the blackberry users looking to get a better phone but refused to go to AT&T, an Android device was the obvious answer. I'm sure if the iPhone was on all 4 major carriers you would see blackberry users jumping onto both iPhone and Android near equally. But since Android has several devices on 4 carriers it gives blackberry users the option to stay with their carrier and upgrade at the same time.

One thing we all can probably agree on, there are iPhone users on AT&T that can't wait for the Samsung Capitivate or any high end Android device and there are Incredible/X/Droid etc users on VZW are dying for a Verizon iPhone.
