There's a storm brewing...

, but I just need a reliable browser and some apps.

Speaking of browsers, I like iOS browser for the simple fact that it supports most non-English unicode fonts. I am originally from Nepal and iOS browser supports my native language fonts while I have not found any android browser supporting these fonts. But that is not a dealbreaker and I am definitely not going to pick up an iPhone or iPad just for the browser. I loved my iPod touch though but I discarded it after I started using my Android phones as my music player as well.

so with it looking more and more likely that the thunderbolt is coming out this thursday, that puts me in a tough spot. luckily for me, i will be away on a business trip next week... joy (after waiting for this for over a month like you guys)! i am trying to figure out my best route to take to get this phone. of course we still dont have all the info yet (let alone a release date), like if there will be a preorder.

if there is, i will probably go that route, preorder it online and cross my fingers that it arrives by the time i get home next friday so i can play with my first android phone all weekend (stupid storm1).

now i was hoping all along i would be able to buy from this verizon store by my house because i have a $15 coupon (every penny counts) that i can add to my last NE2 $50 discount. but i dont want to get aced out of this phone. i dont want to walk into the store friday evening and have them say, "sorry, we are all sold out." and then have to wait a week/2 weeks/3weeks/whatever to get the phone.

so to sum this all up, my question is, do you think there will be a mad run for this phone and a limited stock, meaning that i should do what i can on thursday to get the phone while i am away (order online/buy from a store while i am away)? not that anyone really knows, but i guess based on your experience from other phone releases. thanks.

iPad2 ordered for myself as well. But I will tell you it will be hooked to my Thunderbolt hotspot for internet.

Phone = Android Only.... after trying Storm 1... nightmares...
Web Surfing = iPad 1 and now 2

That's just the way I roll. Anti to neither, buy what works.....

Myself have alwasy found much easier to order it online. Gets next day, and just login and switch phone line to use it one, easy cheesy. Who wants to stand there 45 minutes waitign for a Verizon rep to set it up.. lol

Yea that's my setup, my OG Droid running CM7 is flying right now. Tethering is a dream, but when it's Thunderbolt time that dream will be better.

The 17th looks like it's gonna be a great day.

Yea, the 16GB on my Droid is plenty for my music. It's a good pmp and I'm happy to carry one less thing around. I came from an Archos 605 wifi though lol.

Why not buy it while you're on your trip?

@ enfuego360

If they do an online presale at all I think you'll stand a good chance at picking one up in store.

Otherwise you have an OK shot, remember they have been making these phones for a while now so stock should be decent.

As a teacher I'm constantly yelling at students to put away their phones. Then, my new rule was, if I see them out, I'm going to play with them. Well, I've played with just about every phone on every carrier. Once upon a time, I thought the *phone was the way to go because the only phone I had played with with Android was an OG Droid which was sluggish to say the least. Then, I got my hands on an EVO...needless to say, the Android OS and that phone convinced me that if you want a phone, why buy fruit?

I have still yet to play with an Android tab other than my Nook Color...and I want to root it sooooooo bad, but I'm almost afraid of screwing it up. :(

I find it awesome that as teacher, you figured out what phone you want by playing with your student's phones. That's so badasss lmao

Hey phone gurus, I have a question. I looked up firmware to get a handle on it. Basically it could be about anything. When these reports talk of fimware updates....what are they talking about? What are some good examples of firmware updates? And does anyone have any idea what the most likely firmaware updates might be on the bolt? It appears a firmware update might deal with something more critical to the operation of the decvice than a software update?

Yeah...just think, with all the delay, they must have a stockpile of these things waiting to go!! lol

I just wish ben5 would of given us some more info, like are they hipping yet, or if bb will sell a day early, I mean I am happy that its still on track but a little more info would be cool.

Do any firmware updates require opening up the device? I would think this is also a critical question?

no no no! it can all be done OTA! and these ones they are talking about will be done when you/VZW rep activates the device.
so no worries! :)

My Crapberry got its firmware updates downloaded so my guess would be no. Most technology today is using some form of electronically erasable programmable read only memory...this is automotive technology I speak of, but a hard drive or memory card would be examples in the realm of computers. My best guess would be the firmware has protection that only certain software can interact with making it downloadable and installable. Then again, I may be wrong...wouldn't be the first time.

Firmware updates are usually handled OTA (over the air). They can also be done tethered to a computer (if there is an ruu or executable file of the update). They can be anything from adding a feature to the OS (yahoo mail was one from last year), bug fixes, to a new version of the OS (from 2.1 eclair to 2.2 froyo). There can be some issues with firmware updates, even resulting in bricking the phone (like what happened to some Evos shortly after launch) but if that happens and it is an official update the manufacturer/carrier is responsible for replacing it.

As far as opening the unit that is not necessary for a firmaware update. Firmware updates are software and have nothing to do with changing the hardware. If any hardware needs to be changed in a phone it would be under a recall.
