There's a storm brewing...

HTC and VZW made an agreement to release the phones. The conditions around the release changed on VZW's end and they had to work out the kinks (pricing, plans, etc) After revisions were made, VZW has to resubmit the changes the HTC for review to make sure they are cool with the changes to the agreement. Then the phone will be released. Think of it as a joint business venture.

I think that is highly speculative. There is no reason to believe that it is not a simple supplier-customer relationship between VZW and HTC. I also almost guarantee HTC has no input whatsoever on plans and pricing. From what I have read (all rumors but it sounds reasonable) the details are long term maintenance (service) contracts and details of those contracts to insure HTC (who can actually do the nitty gritty technical work) offers appropriate fixes and updates to the HTC software (firmware and or OS). Now of course you have HTC acting slightly more like a partner in that they are advertising. That is not that abnormal though as they want to have name and brand recognition. Not just for the TB but across their line and across carriers.

Maybe I'm nitpicking, but doesn't T-Mobile still offer unlimited "4G" for $40. And if I'm not mistaken, the new rates leaked this week were for mobile broadband, not smartphone data.

Edit: oops, it's cheaper -- $30 for unlimited "4G"

You're correct about those new rates being for mobile broadband, but it confirms that they are beginning to shift their data pricing structure since cell companies generally increase rates on mobile broadband first, then follow with an increase in smartphone data packages

All the blogs seem to think this is where T-Mo is headed. Sure, they could be wrong, but the best way to predict the future is to analyze history ;)

Hate to say it, but from the looks of things tiered MIGHT stick.

Adios Verizon! Hello Sprint!

It's like buying a Ferrari and being limited to 5 gallons of gas a month. You guys need more competition and a swift reality check.

I find it funny that people can express unequivocal disdain over Tiered pricing but don't' even know what it is yet. Talk about the "glass half empty" philosophy.

Let's get this thread back to guessing release dates. :) I wish we had a pool going.

Do the carriers most often offer grandfathering? Since I am on AT&T now I am waiting to switch to VZW until right when the TB comes out. Obviously looking forward to better reception and a killer new phone. However, if I can get unlimited 3G data at $30/month and have that grandfathered over to the TB and 4G, I would just cruise over to BB and buy an Incredible ASAP (for exchange, obviously). I know we can't predict exactly what they will do but I'm curious about grandfathering in general from VZW and from other carriers. What has been done in the past?

As an aside all of this charging for data in a tiered fashion just reeks of the early days of dialup and ISPs who charged by the minute (often outrageously). The obvious competitive trend that worked there was unlimited data, fixed price. If we cannot get that also by mobile today it only means there is not enough competition. I certainly realize VZW will only do what it thinks will absolutely maximize profits. Unfortunately I believe the greed of tiered plans is simply so flagrant it will absolutely hurt them. It is a tough line to walk as well since 4G is not incredibly wide spread yet. Charging folks for what they can't use yet is also terrible (in the eyes of a customer).

Last but not least the distinction between mobile broadband say on a USB device for a laptop and data for a mobile phone is a distinction I just cant swallow. Mobile is mobile and data is data. Who cares if the data is sent to a 4" screen or a 15" one. The value is identical and the price should be as well. Having the data card plans priced higher again only says to me that VZWs thinking is "hmmm OK this is a business customer, they will pay more so we should charge more". I even a bit surprised that those devices continue to sell. Who doesn't have a mobile with data capability? Praise the lord for jailbreaking and rooting that allows one to totally mask this distinction (i.e. tethering).

With all due respect Frank I think the data pricing is an essential topic for this phone. We all will be stuck with what VZW offers out of the gate and for some of us it may influence the decision to jump on the 4g / TB bandwagon or wait... For myself I am concerned what it might mean to my data and text $20 a month discount for each line. If lose that my bill could go up $80 a month if they tier the data pricing and don't offer unlimited. If that is the case I will go to competitors to see what they have to offer.

Have fun with Wi-Max, lol we'll be passing you on the freeway

You're not in a position to tell me what me needs for high-speed Internet are. Perhaps 7-9 down perfectly suites my needs. Is that ok with you?

To use your analogy, enjoy sitting on the side of the road because you're out of gas as I ease by you on my merry way.

7-9 down in your dreams, you'll be lucky to pull 4-5 down.

I agree that it could actually be a good thing, but I just have no idea where to start since I've never had a smart phone and because nobody knows how fast LTE will chew through minutes. I would be more than willing to pay $40/month for unlimited 4G LTE like you would with Sprint for unlimited 4G

Wi-Max is plenty fast. I have a bunch of friends who have it and they never get less than 4-6 mb/s. That is more than fast enough for me. Heck, that is faster than I get on my cable internet at home. If sprint had a better nationwide coverage area I hands down would be with them. The fact that Sprints coverage area sucks overall is the only reason I am considering VZW. And if they get carried away, I am not currently with VZW and they won't get my money.

I could care less about the tiered data I am always around wifi even at work I have a hub right above my desk so I could deal with a 20 dollar 2 gig fee, I dont plan on watching netflix, so if you have wifi around you should not be that mad either

what does the gas stand for in this analogy?

VZW hasn't changed the data pricing. So, what is there to discuss?

-Frank

You are right but they also have not released the phone should we quit talking about that too? There is a high probability that they will change the data pricing when this phone is released... if not it is coming this summer for sure.
