DON'T need it on HTC Sense phones :P

just need to edit your PRL profile address in EPST and voila, free hotspot using the official app

best thing about the app is you can still use the internet on the phone while sharing it with another device. On the marketplace apps you can only share the connection and not be able to use the data on the phone. (unless this has been changed since i last used it)

BUT it doesn't require root to access EPST and get it for free either.

???????

is there a walk-through on this posted on AC or another trusted source?

I would like to be able to do this when/if i get the tbolt and help my dad set it up on his Dinc if possible.

Looking at my wife's Incredible and I couldn't find that. Where is it? Thanks.

can you go more in depth? a.k.a. dumb it down

basically the phone uses two different addresses when you use different connections:

3G - "yournumber@vzw3g.com"

hotspot - "yournumber@dun-vzw3g.com"

Hotspot uses the same authorization address as the aircards use, which is a DUN username.

Remove dun from the username and make it the same as the user name on the 3G username and voila, FREE hotspot!

to access EPST here's the tutorial, if you have a Droid Incredible, or EVO you can try it out.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

##778 - hit call/send

a popup will show up: click "edit mode"

PASSWORD: 000000

Access: M.IP Default Profile

Click: DUN NAI

remove DUN from your user name (it should look like an email address when you remove dun, make sure there are NO spaces (ie: @vzw3g.com)
(basically make sure it looks exactly like this "yournumber@vzw3g.com"

YOURNUMBER is what your phone number would be in the address
Once your done, click OK

HIT MENU (capacitive button) click: COMMIT MODIFICATIONS

-----------------------------------------------------------------

It will ask to reboot (not always)

Then voila, FREE hotspot and Tethering :P

Your welcome :P Now, isn't that more painless than having to root if thats all your gonna use ROOT for until a good custom rom arrives? ;)

THIS WILL ONLY WORK ON HTC PHONES, THE SAME METHOD CANNOT BE USED ON MOTOROLA OR OTHER BRANDS!!!

BMX is going to give details about the release because Verizon is announcing the release tomorrow so then he won't really be releasing information before he should. Just my theory....

Thanks NCX. So when I turn it on just ignore the warning? I'm assuming it wouldn't turn on if you haven't subscribed to it.?.?

The warning is just a disclaimer so you can go back and say "well i wasn't informed, give me my money back"

anyway lol, no ignore the warning, its there by default, and it will not let you use hotspot if your not subscribed, SO if you changed your DUN NAI address, and it starts to work, you have succeeded in sticking it to the man for not giving us HTC users free hotspot like they currently do for PALM users on Verizon.

the dun nai address is basically your user name to connect to the hotspot/tethering feature on the phone, its used in the same manner for air cards, except on aircards, they don't have any other choice but to use a DUN NAI address.

it fools the phone into thinking its just using regular 3G basically

Is there anyway for Bid Red to figure out you are doing this? I am paranoid by nature. Took me forever to root my OG Droid for fear of bricking it. I want to be more of a risk taker, just not part of my psyche I guess.

Also, this is to use hotspot with 3G, do you think it will be this easy to do it for 4G or do you think they will find a way to prevent this...?

That's awesome. Seems to me by charging to use the hotspots they are basically charging you twice for the use of the same data. Doesn't seem quite right. But hey what do I know? :)

Not unless you call them up and say "hey, i hacked my phone into giving me free hotspot, take that!"

But really no, even if you change roms, its changed in your PRL until you edit it again, you can flash as many roms, format, flash a stock RUU and it will still be there.

I've used this for over a year now and i've NEVER gotten charged for hotspot.
(Makes you wonder why they want to switch to Tiered data don't it?, because they can't do anything about it)

Longtime member of XDA here

believe it or not, its the same method Windows mobile 6.5 uses to get around hotspot/tethering charges.

for 4G, i would assume it would be the same, but its possible they may have found a way to block or even track with LTE since LTE can broadcast more info back and forth, and we also have a SIM card to deal with.

I am NOT 100% certain,

so instead of it looking like this

"yournumber@vzw3g.com"

it would look like this

"yournumber@vzw4g.com"
"yournumber@dun-vzw4g.com"
