This phone had really become a disappointment (stock)

I have to agree with Paul627g, overall i was happy with the hardware of the device. It was the software that always needed constant tweeking. Once i put SRF 1.1.1 on mine with EE03 Modem i didnt want to change a thing. But as the original posted mentioned he does not want to root. In that case the EPIC probably isnt the right phone for him. Sorry..
Its a great device WITH the right software. Unfortunately that means ROOT and Custom Rom / Kernel.

I just don't trust my self to root. I would have no problem getting it done. My point is the phone should live up to expectations and rooting should be a plus

I completely agree with you. Problem is as an adviser I see a lot of what goes on and honestly I really feel there is slim pickings for any stock device that doesn't have its quirks and issues. If things ran perfect or close to perfect there wouldn't be such a demand for custom ROMs and devs to create and fix things..

It seems like most devices, once people start really digging around they find out their so called great stock OS isn't as perfect as they nearly thought when compared to what rooting will offer them..

But to each their own, its your own decision to root or not and I respect that. :)

I would like too but when reading instructions they are written as if everyone knows what is being said. Terms and instructions aren't broken down for novice like my self. That's just my opinion. Otherwise if def mess around with it

yeah dont forget about the corporate pockets. I would love to see how many people actually like sprint tv, spirnt radio, nascar apps, all the stuff they pre-load, aka bloatware.
Your right Some of the blaotware alone is cause for a number of devices to have custom roms.

I also resepect his decision to not root. Hopefully he can stick with it to get a stock rom that he likes.
My device was good but when i found ACS SFR 1.1.1 with EE03 modem it truly was a great device.

I'm with the OP - my Epic has gone to crap too. I bought it last August and I am due for an upgrade Aug 1 again since I'm a 10 year customer, but not sure what phone I'll be switching to. Not interested in another Samsung device but I think the EVO is too big and clunky.

My phone restarts itself all the time - randomly, while it's on, it just freezes up completely and then it basically goes through a reboot without actually turning off. It's strange - just another added feature I suppose.
The battery is brutal - have used the recommended apps and such but with little success. I don't use 3g or 4g beyond when i'm driving, the battery goes too quick. I keep wifi on all the time and if I really need data, I'll fire it up for a minute or two. I have 4g in my area and the speeds are good, but it's spotty at best and consumes too much battery life as it searches for the 4g signal and toggles back to 3g constantly, unless I stay in the same spot.
The force closes are insane, almost all the time, good times.
I am stock, I'm not rooting. I did a reset about a month ago and wiped everything off completely, did nothing to help the device.
So, don't know where I'm going next. Samsung really sucks though and I'm tired of waiting on updates to make it better - froyo sucks since eclair. eclair worked at least. someday they might launch gingerbread, but probably not til sept or oct i bet.....
I do like sprint though for some reason :) and i'll stay with them especially since i can get a new piece of crap once a year!
cheers!

I feel ya but the phone has gotten a little better after a three finger salute 3x's. First time out like normal and the next two times when you see the Samsung logo. So ex: once now. Second time as soon as you see the Samsung logo. And third time just like the second time out. It's improved signal and it works a little better. Not anything to brag about other than the signal

14 years with Sprint. Have had a Treo, Blackberry and now Epic. Epic has been the worst user experience. Unless it's pure Google, Android is too much trouble. Also up for a refresh in August. Waiting for the new iPhone. If Sprint gets it, great. If not, goodbye Sprint. BTW, my company pays for Verizon, but I pay for Sprint out of my own pocket. So I've been as loyal as possible. Hoping I won't have to defect.

I will stay Android, its the now and the future... Not to say Apple and others won't be there but Android is growing and exploding so fast it would take a major event to stop its momentum.

Pure Google, sure that would be nice but at the same time it currently limits you to the Nexus line... We will just have to wait and see what the future Nexus holds and maybe that will be a bit more appealing to me..

As far as the Epic being a disappointment? I wouldn't go that far.. The Galaxy S line in general has been very successful.. I pay attention when I'm in the stores and out and about.. I would say a very good share of people walking around with Android phones today are running a Galaxy S line. Many seem to forget this is the first run of a new line and like anything else it has its ups and downs. You buy a new line of car, first year may completely blow but it gets by enough for a second year and it gets better with refinements. Sure Sammy could be better with software updates, but really give them credit for doing as well as they did supporting all the different carriers selling the Galaxy S lineup. I'm sure things will be better for the next line, the SGSII and others...

Only time will tell.. But in the end, my Epic 4g has been a lot of fun and will continue to be until I decide what to replace it with somewhere down the road.

If somebody paid my phone service with Verizon. I would be with Verizon long time ago.

I pay $65 after tax on Verizon... Should have gone in before the tiered data plans though. I used 11GB last month (amazing how much crap you can download with LTE). The data alone would cost $100. fortnuately, I don't have to worry about it.

I'm up in the air right now.. I'm watching the Samsung Galaxy S II whenever that drops on Sprint, the new Epic 2 and whatever Nexus plans to drop down the road... Those are the 3 directions I'm heading...

WOW what an opposite expererience. he says Treo and Blackberry are better then the EPIC.
I have a 3D and kept my EPIC as a back up. I still miss the screen and how stable it was.
Guess its all user dependent. Stock EPIC is not so great. Rooted mine and put ACS Frozen 1.1.1 and was extremely happy.
If it wasnt for daul core, better battery life and 3D i would be back to my EPIC.

I believe Samsung has made the Epic that way on purpose, so people will keep buying new phones all the time. Also,
I agree with Paul I am going to wait until the new Nexus comes out!!!:D

Everyone's experience and expectations are different, I guess. Over the years I have had Treos and BlackBerrys and finally the Epic which I purchased at launch last year. I have found the Epic to be the best of the bunch even with the stock OS. I didn't really experience any MAJOR issues when my Epic was stock but once I tried some custom ROMs there was no way I was going back to stock.

The only other Android phone I have owned was an HTC EVO. I'll never understand what all the fuss about the EVO was as I thought the screen was poor and the overall performance was very choppy to say the least. My point is that, as others have said, each phone has its pros and cons. For me, even in stock form, the Epic is a very good phone and one which I will happily keep until something much better comes along.

My biggest concern at the moment is Sprint's network which definitely ain't what it used to be. Hopefully there will be some big network improvements in the near future as I really don't want to change to VZW.
