Unable to get 5.1 audio from Chromecast

I have been trying to get 5.1 audio from Chromecast for a week now since it showed up at my door. Until tonight when I noticed that I wasn't getting DTS or DD from my Sony Google TV either, I had dealt with this issue before so I knew exactly what to look at and sure enough under the HDMI menu on my Sony STR-DH800 Audio out was set to AMP+TV, in this mode it will only do PCM audio, something to do with HDCP. Anyway I switched the audio out back to AMP only, and I tried a 5.1 Title from Netflix. Low and behold the screen displays Dolby D + instead of PCM this time.

Just replying to say thank you for this and in case anyone else is googling it - it fixed the problem with only getting stereo from Chromecast on my Sony STR-DH820. Got DD+ straight away after changing to amp only.

Hi All,

Just a quick one, I'm also having issues with the whole Netflix and 5.1 issue. I have a Sony STR-DA2400ES Amp that supports DD+, however I've noticed that it only supports it through Optical not HDMI. My TV is old and defiantly doesn't support it. Can anyone recommend a way for the amp to see DD+ over HDMI or is there a spilitter type box I can buy to split HDMI in to HDMI Video out and Optical Audio out?

Thanks

Kev

Hi, I had similar problems i.e no DD 5.1 (Let alone DD+) from my Chrome Cast. Solution was to plug directly into AMP instead of a HDMI port on TV. TV was outputting DD 5.1 audio fine to the AMP/Receiver using the optical cable when watching TV but it obviously couldn't passthrough the DD signal. All is good now tested Hunger Games and my Onkyo TX-SR805 is now displaying Dolby Digital + on the screen!!

Going through the TV is certainly not optimal.

I got a new UHD TV that supports ARC that won't pass through of DD+. I was suprised because technically it has everything needed to support it. The best it will do is dolby digital 5.1. The sad part is it clearly can decode DD+, it just won't send it over the HDMI ARC connection. I was really disappointed to find this out.

I had to change how my HTPC is connected so I could continue to get HD Audio.

I am also not getting any 5.1 from my chromecast

I have my CC plugged into my Denon s500bt. This reciever does support dd+. Most of the content I am playing is through plex, and I am certain it has either DTS or DD encoded surround sound. I have not had any luck getting this to work.

Reciever says it's a pcm signal with 48k something. It also will not let me put the reciever in a DD or DTS sound mode.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

From what I've seen, most TVs support Dolby decoding or Dolby pass through. But few support Dolby encoding on their outputs. This might be a Dolby licensing issue.

I know this is an old thread, but in case anyone comes across it with the same problem I was having, the fix was beyond easy and so goddamn stupid that I feel obligated to post it in case it can save at least one person hours of struggling with the countless suggestions out there that don't address the actual problem.

In my netflix account settings, there's a "playback settings" option under profile settings. I had mine set to "low". Not sure why. Maybe it's the default or maybe I set it there at some point to reduce data consumption on my cell phone data plan. Anyway, I set it to "high" and now I have the "dolby digital plus 5.1" audio option.

Didn't help me. I suspect the 2nd Gen CC will now ONLY work with a DD+ Avr. I can cast DD5.1 to a firestick but if I cast to a CC that is connected to a DD5.1 amp, I only get stereo.
