Thanks for posting this.

I recently changed this setting with a bunch of other stuff and am going to undo what I did now.

My phone is less than a day old. I panicked when I got that black screen. I'm glad the volume down button and power button helped.

I just got the black screen too. Day 5 of the S7. I did not have the screen on display off...it was on, none of those settings were changed.

just try the volume down button and power button trick, it worked for the rest of us

Same thing happened to my Galaxy s7 & I've had it for like two weeks now. Yes, holding down the down volume key & the power button on the right side did restart the phone. Here's to hoping Samsung will be releasing an update to resolve this as all the carriers are reporting a lot of this back to the manufacturer.

First, thanks to all who posted with the solutions to this. Last night I was playing on my phone, while gaming on my computer. Phone was plugged in to charge for the night (I was about to turn in). I was basically tagteaming between the computer and the phone; when I needed to wait for something ingame on my computer, I'd play a bit on the phone. Put the phone face down on my lap, something I'd done many times before. It'd been like that for just a few minutes, when I picked it up to resume where I'd left off, and there was the unresponsive black screen of this forum. Bottom keys would light up occasionally, but were unresponsive, as was home button. LED light came on to show phone was charging when plugged in. I gave up and went to bed.
This morning, I searched online, and after reading this thread, I tried the power + volume up, and got nothing. Within seconds of trying power + volume down, I got an instant reboot, phone working fine again. As with others, the phone rang when called while this problem occurred.
My display settings were what they came with for the phone, save that I'd taken off the automatic brightness adjustment. The "Keep screen turned off" option was "off".
Phone was in its Otterbox case at the time.
Thanks again for the help!

Same thing happened to me today after have phone about two weeks. Volume down and power ...then did normal boot and it seems fine. Phone was just sitting on the table in full daylight.

If it happens again, the phone os going back for a replacement. Hopefully Samsung will send out a fix for this

Just adding my experience too. Have had my S7 for about 7 days. Screen went black this morning. Had just read some messages from the Verizon message app. Phone was fully charged. Put it down and when I came back it was black! Sound and internal functioning seemed fine. Thanks to the advice from this forum, got it functioning again. Otherwise, love the phone! Guess I'll see what Verizon is recommending. Hope there is a fix in the next upgrade. Hate to go through all that set-up again!

Hi all, thanks for the great instruction! I just experienced the black screen on my new s7, I've only had it 2 days..I will be calling Sprint tomorrow! The power/volume down button did the trick immediately and I didnt lose any data..but my phone was off for 6hrs before stumbling on this post.

Got this problem too.
I experienced some other fixes. For me stays the screen black if I turn off the "Screen Allways On" Option.
No Resets or Safe Modes can handle this problem.
If I keep the already called option on, I'm able to use my phone normaly.
Hope that helps you and the support

Ive never had Blackscreen or buttons stop working - knock on wood
Weeks ago I did research finding some S6 owners experiencing same Blackscreen & Vol-Pwr button bugs.
A few of their postings blamed VR Gear Software being cause which kind of makes sense.
When device is attached to VR Gear , black screen - buttons not work kicks in as should Gear hardware takes over.
After finding that out I went into prevent mode disabling VR Gear software.

Hi folks,

My wife and I have both come across this black screen, unresponsive issue.

Although holding down the Power and Volume DOWN buttons for 10 seconds works, but it is only a workaround.

Please note that this is not the actual fix as the root cause still needs to be determined.

I've had the phone for almost a month, and noticed this black screen issue after two days from a Tmobile OTA update.
And my wife just got the phone 3 days ago, that too she did the Tmobile Update the day she a bought it, and came across this issue.

What we noticed was that, the phone was set on the wireless Samsung charger overnight and woke up the next morning and found it in this state.

Here are some setup info of our phones:

Also have Samsung SD card the Pro plus 64gb version.

The reason I provided the above data is to determine if we can call narrow down a commonality in hopes to rule out software issue vs hardware.

For me it seems an Software issue. Cause I experienced this error in safe mode and in total reseted system condition.
The issue is reduced by 95% if I keep the "Always Display On" function on, maybe you can try this.

I've had my S7 Edge for about a month. 4 days ago when my phone would go dark, after a second or so, it would lighten back up a little and take on a reddish hue. My night clock was on at the time so I turned that off and it seemed to stop doing this. I figured I would wait and take my phone to a store during the weekend and talk to them about it. The next day as I closed out an app I using, the screen froze then went black. It also became really hot. I immediately brought it to a Verizon store in which case they tried all the button pushing. That didn't work so they called a Verizon tech and we pressed more buttons...didn't work. They had me go home and call back and we pressed more buttons, connected my phone to my computer and attempted to try a software upgrade. That didn't work either. So since I've passed the 14 days it was decided they would send me another "like new" phone to replace mine.

Long story, but in short...the buttons did not work for me. I have continued to try the buttons while waiting for this other phone to come and nothing. Oh and the "Always on Display" option has always been disabled on my phone so I don't believe that is it.

Before the S7 Edge I had the S6 Edge which I passed on to my son and it did and still does work perfectly. Hopefully just new phone glitches that will be worked out in future updates. Hopefully.

I enabled that feature also last night and my phone had this issue. I turned it off this morning after rebooting 4 time and all seems good now. I haven't had the issue since I changed the setting back to off.
