Re: TIPS: How to re-enable Tethering on KitKat. *updated*

The update to 4.4.2 reenabled my ability to tether wirelessly (or maybe it is because my data cycle reset today). Unfortunately, prior to discovering this I may have deleted more drivers than necessary. I deleted several Google drivers and a couple of Samsung drivers (mtp and USB, I think). Now my phone can't tether via USB. How to I restore my original drivers so I can USB tether (or where can I locate the Samsung USB and mtp drivers I deleted)? Thanks!

Does anyone in this thread have ST-AT&T? And have you lost tethering when upgrading to KitKat? I have held off on upgrading because I do need to tether occasionally. It's rare that I tether a computer, mainly just to my tablet and my kids' devices.

I have ST T-Mobile. Upgraded to 4.4 and lost ability to tether. Upgraded to 4.4.2 and can now tether again. My service cycle also reset on the same day I upgraded to 4.4.2 so I guess it's possible they're just giving me the 100 mb of tethering another thread mentioned. I did a system restore to undo all the screw-ups I made on my computer trying to figure this out, so it's nothing I've done to fix tethering, it's either the 4.4.2 upgrade or the billing cycle restart.

Hi all,

I need to know if does exist a way to get bluetooth theter on N10 (no root) from a smartphone android 2.1
I guess there is no way and I am a bit sad, couse I like my N10 and I like my Xperia U201.
In case it is not possible, usb tether may be fine too, but ClockworkMod's Tether won't works on 2.1, so I do not get any solution on the web until now... Thanks in advance for any suggestion

I have tried to watch this podcast with several different browsers and computers, is there some trick? Can't seem to open it. Hope it is true that an app can restore tethering.

It does. Just download the app and tethering is in the menu under network. Actually, it should be under tools/net manager in the menu.

The app (ES File Manager) did not help, still got the upsell screen (running 4.4.1).

However, I upgraded to 4.4.2 and, as reported by circusclown44 and rickyd5000, wifi tethering is working again! Using N4 with T-Mobile grandfathered T-Zones $5.99 plan.

If your smartphone is running 2.1 (Eclair, which is prehistoric by Android standards IMHO), then you probably need to ask in the general OS section. This thread is specific to wi-fi tethering on a host device running 4.4.x, KitKat. That the client you're using is a N10 is irrelevant; in my case, one client was on iOS 7. ;)

Just looking for confirmation - 4.4.2 restores the ability to use wi-fi hotspot tethering? A few folks above are reporting 4.4.2 fixed the tethering problem, but a couple replies after say you still need to use a 3rd party app? I'm still on 4.3 as I use wi-fi tethering somewhat frequently and I haven't had time to root my phone yet to upgrade to 4.4 and then get tethering working again. But it sounds like I might now be able to do the OTA upgrades from 4.3 to 4.4 and then to 4.4.2 and tethering will continue to work? Thanks in advance...

I lost wifi tethering after upgrading to 4.4.1 but got it back with 4.4.2, no 3rd party app needed. Can't guaranty it would be the same for you, I'd stick with 4.3 for now if wifi tethering is important.

Hey NexusGirlX, so did you do this and get your tethering back? Okay. I found the link to the area of the podcast that talks about this app. I downloaded it.

Aren't you on the T-Mo $30/mo plan? I'm trying to figure out if this will work on ST-AT&T. I haven't upgraded yet, still on 4.3.

I'm still on 4.3 and haven't upgraded. Sorry, not really using the Nexus anymore, got an iPhone 5S on the $70 unlimited postpaid and also bought a Retina Mini.

I'm pretty much off this site now. I'll come back next fall when the new Nexus comes out and I'll see if it's worth buying then. For now, I'm happy with iOS.

Good luck with your phones.

How can you get used to that small screen, keyboard in all caps, and lack of ability to change anything on IOS?

Some people prefer the simplicity. My son has always been a diehard iPhone user. Recently, I convinced him to try Android. His biggest comment was using an Android phone is liking having a mini computer. Although he did like it, he has gone back to iPhone, but his biggest reason for that is because he claims he needs the iPhone messaging app to receive certain messages from his friends that are on iPhone.

That's why we call it a walled garden or 'locked in'. But not everyone needs all the customization and feature of Android which confuses them so I don't have a problem with that. (It's only when someone come to Android and complain about why it doesn't work a certain way like iOS should or lack an iOS 'feature'.)

I've used iPhones since the original in 2007. Too me there is no other device that I have used that I like more than using an iPhone.

It's also about the apps. Back in early July, I posted a thread I think in the Nexus 7 forum comparing several iPad apps to the same apps on the Nexus 7. Just about everyone of those apps had no tablet version on Android, yet they have an iPad version, different then the iPhone version on the iOS side. It's been nearly a year me using Android and only one of those apps was given an Android version. Why? The app developers don't care? Too lazy?

Then there is what I can't do on Android that I can do on my iPad/iPhone. I have 13,000 songs in iTunes Match and when I play a song on my iPad/iPhone using iTunes Match, the play counts and played dates are updates on my computer and also updating playlists that I have on my iPad/iPhone. I have one playlist that will only include songs that I have listened to in the last year.

Then, I have thousands of TV show episodes that I have bought in iTunes and hundreds of HD movies bought in iTunes.

I doubt if I will ever own another Nexus 7 due to the iPad Mini now being Retina. I have a police officer friend who has my Nexus 7 and has promised me that he will give it to someone (a young teen) who he feels needs it and would be so happy to have one. He will give it this person on either Christmas eve or Christmas day. He will come across someone on one of those days, he says it's guaranteed. All I ask is that I get a picture of the person holding it . That will make me happy.

Like I said though, I will look forward to next years Nexus phone to see what it has and maybe I will buy it. For now, I am extremely happy with my iOS devices.

Sorry for going off topic, but I needed to say it. Happy Holidays all, and the New Year has to be better, right?
