Using Hangouts for SMS/Texts/MMS is really going to take some getting used to

in hangout account settings, im trying to figure out how/why its showing a half a dozen old phone numbers for me (from old or test phones) under "Phone number confirmed" section. its driving me crazy and it doesnt seem like there's any way to remove any of them...

what is annoying me is the inability to remove old devices from Android Device Manager in Google Play Settings on PC. i can't even hide them. i try to uncheck the box but they keep coming back. old devices are showing up in Chrome history too.

I am frustrated with my SMS texting with my new N5. Even after I manually typed in everyone cell phone number with their names as the N5's contacts, all I see when I get a text from them is their phone number without their name as who sent it. Gave up trying to text using "OK Google". Love the phone hate the contacts, texting and Hangout.

Only thing I can think of is that it may be saving your contacts to the phone instead of to Google or the sync may need to be nudged. That is frustrating, might deserve a new thread to troubleshoot if that didn't resolve.

is anyone able to confirm their phone number by doing -

Hangouts-->Overflow-->Settings-->YourGmailAddress-->Phone Number Confirmed-->Confirm

???

i get a "we can't confirm your number but you don't necessarily need to to use Hangouts".

weird.

This is what thought... Why would you even have to "manually typed in everyone cell phone number with their names as the N5's contacts"? They should have been auto-synced from your Google Account when you activated the phone.

The way hangouts has been integrated into the operating system is much like how facetime has been baked into the messaging app for iOS. Nice to have all of your messaging and video chat features in one app.

The "Google-ness" of the Nexus 5 goes well beyond the new Nexus 5 Launcher. Hangouts is the default SMS app on the Nexus 5 — and though the SMS integration will be available on other devices soon, the fact that Google didn't even deign to include Android's stock messaging app is telling. Users can download and use another SMS app if they prefer, but for Lockheimer the benefits of sticking with Hangouts is obvious. "Unification ... is just a better user experience," he says. "We've merged three icons into one, and it's just a lot easier for people to understand that."

I can't believe this hasn't been brought up more frequently. This is a huge deal breaker for me that I can't send a text longer than 160 characters.

sure you can. it just breaks it up. isn't that what every SMS App does?

If there's a major shift in the software beyond interface cleanup and additional under-the-hood improvements, it might be the new version of Hangouts. The messaging app now fully integrates SMS and MMS, and replaces the "Messages" app from previous versions of the software. You can now send texts, instant messages, voice calls, and video calls all from the same place, giving it a feel much more akin to iMessage. It's a fantastic idea on paper, but a really clunky execution in KitKat. If you’re talking to someone via Hangouts, and then you text them via SMS, it starts an entirely new, separate conversation. Unlike iMessage, which combines everything into one stream whether you’re using SMS or not, Hangouts bifurcates those conversations, making communication actually more confusing and harder to navigate. Coupled with the fact that Google still doesn’t group separate accounts together in its apps, things are downright puzzling at times when trying to carry on a conversation. How can this be so hard? webOS got account linking and merged conversations right in 2009.

It's odd. The phone knows that the person I'm texting with is the same person I'm chatting with in Hangouts (the user card is the same), but those two conversations sit apart from one another. Why can't those conversations be merged? Even if you had to hand-select what kind of message you wanted to send, it might be easier than switching between two completely different streams. My assumption is that Google knows this isn't a perfect execution — I only hope they deal with it sooner rather than later.

Nope, once I get to 160 I can't add anymore characters. Incoming is fine, but outgoing seems to not allow it.

are you sure? i can go over 160. it just adds a (2) next to it just like the old Jelly Bean SMS App. i'm with AT&T.

Positive. Just tried it again. It shows no numbers at all until I have about 10 characters left, which then counts down to zero. Can't do anything after that. I'm with Sprint but I can't see how carrier would make a difference. Guess I'll download 8sms and give it a try.

I was able to text the entire quoted post above and successfully send it to my cell phone number and to email. So no issues sending over 160 characters via text here. I am using AT&T GoPhone, if that matters.

Side note: I am totally in agreement with the quoted post. I think the Hangouts app has a LONG way to go. There needs to be more merging of text conversations and hangout chatting as well as an ability to better separate the two. Right now, it's so dreadful to send a text. There also needs to be more appearance customization.

Outside of Hangouts, I f*****g love this phone. And I know Google will cleanup Hangouts because they've been making many overhauls to Hangouts since it was Google Talk.

i would like to see "SWIPE TO DELETE" and a "DELETE ALL" for SMS. i'm real OCD and hate clutter and like to always keep my SMS clean. it feels like a PIA to delete the inbox. anyone agree?
