Using the Nexus 5X on Verizon?

I think I now have definitive proof of the Verizon SIM blocking the OTA.
I tried the suggested reboot without the SIM and it did not work.

I have another SIM that I use in my car and for overseas travel, working on a GSM network and in the US T-Mobile.
I put it in the Nexus 5X, rebooted and within seconds the OTA uploaded.

So it is clearly the Verizon SIM.

Is this a problem with Verizon or Google? Either way, I'd appreciate if someone could work on a solution.

Which update are you referring to? The monthly security patch for November?

Yes, as long as the sim card is already activated. I had no problems activating mine on Verizon before it was on Project Fi.

Are you getting updates? Are all calling and data features working properly? Data working while on a call? The more I read about this phone on Verizon the less I want it. Just seems like too much of a hassle.

I've been using my 5X on Verizon since 10/20 and have not received a single OTA update despite the fact that I check multiple times per day for the November security update. I haven't had any glaring issues with the phone, but the main reason I decided to give Android another shot is because they released a non-phablet sized Nexus that works with VZW. I may go back to AT&T for the Lumia 950 because I prefer that OS over Android.

I am not sure about ota updates. I put my Fi sim in before the November patch was life. I can, however, confirm that calling, SMS, MMS, and data all work as they should. There is no VoLTE compatibility because that requires Verizon specific software to work properly.

I'm not sure I care about Volte but I don't want to have issues not getting updates. Anyone know if Verizon will ever support this phone? I just bought the Moto X Pure which is unlocked and the only issue i've had so far is the my Verizon widget doesn't work. The phone is too big and the Nexus 5X is the only normal size phone i'd want to buy. I'm not going to switch networks because Verizon has the best service in my area. I might just buy the Nexus 5X and see how it goes but i'd only have 15 days to return it and i'd probably have to pay to ship it back.

I think as long as Verizon cannot slap their bloat on the 5X they won't "support" it; though it should function on their network for basic services. I'm not certain how Verizon could actively block OTA updates indefinitely since they should not be in the OTA pipeline for the 5X. And, while it would be a pain, I would think pulling the SIM should allow a WiFi only connection to Google's servers to collect the update (granted, one doesn't just connect to Google's OTA servers and request the update - Google decides to send it, so not having the SIM installed for several hours would not be acceptable). I received my 5X and did not immediately install my Verizon SIM, and did receive the first OTA that many users indicated receiving on initial unboxing; I've not yet received the November security update.

I too was successful in getting updates initially when I didn't have a SIM ready for the 5X when I first received it via WiFi. I am going to try removing the SIM and attempting the update today since it's my day off and don't really need the phone at home for a bit. I'll post up if the update is successful.

This is going to be a royal pain if I have to do this every single month just to get the update because Verizon is being a total bag of choads and not allowing the updates to come normally.

So in roughly two hours with the SIM removed, I've tried to update 3x. Phone continues to say it's up to date (MDB08I build).

MDB80M...when will you finally make it to my phone...:'(

I was wondering if any of you with the 5X on VZW are on More Everything and out-of-contract? Are you getting the $15/$25 monthly discount for ooc lines?

I guess some non-VZW branded or non-VZW compatible devices haven't gotten it in the past...

Thanks!
I was just on chat with VZW about this, because the $15 off M2M was on my line but not my spouse's. They've appeared to fix that now. He's on the 5x, evaluating it as a possible new phone.

Went ahead and just unlocked the bootloader and flashed the two available updates (MDB08L & MDB80M). Went ahead and did a full wipe as well, phone is reinstalling stuff as we speak.

No issues so far.

Perhaps also try putting it in Airplane mode and then turning wifi back on. This should give you wifi connection to Google w/o any radio contact to VZW.

Just received MDB08L OTA on Verizon so I don't think they are blocking OTAs. Seems to be a slow rollout if all.

I'm on Verizon and about an hour ago I received the MDB08L OTA that included the November security update, I think it's just rolling out extremely slow.

On a side note, my Nexus 6 that has been without the Verizon sim card since the 5X came out barely received the Marshmallow update this past Sunday (it's been on wifi all this time) so once again I think updates are just rolled out slowly.

That's encouraging that the updates are coming. Are your phones working properly? Is there still no talk and data at the same time or was there a solution for that? Are there any apps that aren't working? I returned the Moto X pure but as I said in my post last week the only issue I had was the stupid My Verizon widget wouldn't work. Does it work on this phone?

Talk and data has worked for us since day 1 on Verizon. You just have to enable advanced calling on Vzw website then enable enhanced LTE on device. As for my Verizon widget, I don't regularly use it but I just tried to get it to work and couldn't.

Are you able to use advanced calling with Google Voice handling voice mail? I found that with both enabled, sometimes calls would go directly to voice mail even when I was in a good coverage area with my phone on. Toggling airplane mode would fix it, but going back to VZW's v/m seems to eliminate the problem entirely.

What widget do you have? When I had the Moto X Pure I thought I saw one in the play store that said Nexus.

Would you say that other than the widget the phone works like any other phone should work on Verizon? I'm just trying to find out what some differences are that may not be fixable.
