Verizon Galaxy S3: 4.3 update questions and issues!

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues!

I have now cleared the system cache. Things seem a little better. WWF has settled down. Trulia is still slow to slide pictures, but only when I open it through an email update. It's fine when I go through the app. I can live with it since I don't want to wipe out everything.

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues!

I noticed one time when my phone was booting up a screen appeared with SAMSUNG on it and a picture of an unlocked pad lock and the word CUSTOM written under it. I've only seen this screen the one time. I don't believe I saw the Verizon screen either during this boot up, but I don't 100% recall now. Every boot up since then has had all the normal screens.

Anyone else get this? What could it mean? I'm fully stock and never been rooted.

I've read posts from other users that have seen that weird behavior. Does your phone have an SD card present? Seems like that was a common factor in most reports.

I do have a SD card in my phone. I don't really have anything on it like music or movies.

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues!

There is one suggestion located in the following thread listed below via rooting your phone (I personally don't know as I have not tested this scenario but am confident that this might be the permanent solution). This thread will also make mention that you can "Force stop" the SDM app in the Application Manager and that this will stop this from reoccurring in which is NOT true at all as it's not exactly as simple as that scenario. Good luck to you

After a few days of deferring the update, I wiped cache, rebooted, and then forceclosed SDM and the notifications never came back (stock, never rooted). This way should also remove the OTA from your phone altogether, but i'm not 100% sure about that. This method was mentioned here by DMAC5429 Verizon S3: How to stop the 4.3 update?

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues!

Mine flashes when it rings too. I am not sure if I like or dislike it but I agree I would like to know how to shut it off if I want to.

I'll read on and maybe there is an answer in the next 6 pages.

OK - I saw the answer to shut off the flash when the phone rings. Settings/accessory/ turn on flash and then turn it off. Thanks:)

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues! wifi shuts off

OK, here is my problem and it use to do this sometimes with the 4.12 software I had before 4.3 upgraded. I will notice that my wifi connections is not on. The switch in settings is off and I did not turn it off. My wife has the same Galaxy 3 with 4.3 and hers does it too. Not all the time, now and then and there is a good wifi signal in the house. I have tried many switches and none seem to fix it.

Ideas???

Do you have Power Saving enabled? This could cause that behavior as the battery reaches a certain level.

Otherwise I'd say that you (both) have an app installed that's causing this to happen. You could try booting into Safe mode and see if the issue goes away - if it does then some app is at fault.

How do you reboot into safe mode? Power savings is on, but I rarely allow the phone charge to drop much and it is often in a charger and it still happens.

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues! wifi shuts off

So, I got the update in early January. At first, I had a LOT of issues, but many seem to have straightened themselves out. However, at the time, it was extremely frustrating and I followed the lead of a few posters and wrote the FCC.

Yesterday, a CSR from Verizon called me and mentioned the letter to the FCC I had written. We discussed the issues I still had (nav, fast battery discharge, lag, random freezing, occasional heating up of phone).

He offered to send me another phone (S3, refurb). When I asked if it would have the update on it, he said yes and I said I didn't want to do that. So then, he offered to send a refurb S4. His offer was to send it and let me use it for a few days, and then send my phone back or the S4 back, no contract extension, etc.

So my main question is whether getting a refurb S4 is a good idea, assuming the phone functions properly. I will have some extra time when the new phone comes to really play with it and it seems like a rather fair offer. I've only ever bought a new phone and have no experience with refurb. Are they generally okay? Could I be worse off? I did forget to ask him if my insurance will cover the replacement device, so that could be a factor.

Anyone else receive this option? Opinions? TIA

How do you reboot into safe mode?
Reboot the phone like you normally would - once the phone finishes shutting down, press-and-hold the Volume Down rocker and continue holding it while the phone finishes booting. Once you get to the login screen you'll see 'Safe mode' in the lower left corner.

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues! wifi shuts off

I followed the lead of a few posters and wrote the FCC.
The recommendations I've made to contact the FCC have been in cases where a carrier is refusing to unlock a phone so that the user can move to a different carrier. This is directly in the purview of the FCC, and President Obama has in fact asked the FCC to crack down on the carriers for this.
Problems with phones? Well, not so much...

Of course, the S4 will also have 4.3 on it, so I'm not sure what you're hoping for.
You are getting a newer model, so there's that. I haven't read the S4 forums but occasional S4 users will post here with problems similar to ours (SD card corruption being one example), so you'll probably experience a snappier phone while being subject to whatever oddities the S4 has.

You should read through the S4 forums, focusing on the post-4.3 issues, to see what you're in for.

And maybe you can get the CSR to agree to send you a new S4 since you have some leverage. ;)

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues! wifi shuts off

GSDer, you're absolutely right about the FCC business. I realized pretty soon that I'd been impulsive in my frustration and irritation, but then I figured it would just be ignored since it didn't really apply. Somehow, it got to Verizon, so there's that.

I figure nothing ventured, nothing gained, in trying out the S4. Worst case scenario is I keep the phone I already have, with its new idiosyncrasies to which I'm becoming accustomed, except for the significantly shorter battery life. Just learning a new phone has its own frustrations, software issues notwithstanding.

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues!

rubbish update this one, phone is now crap.

Could you please be more specific? What problems are you having? I didn't take the OTA, but I'm using a fairly stock 4.3 ROM, and I kind of like 4.3. So I'm curious what problems are making your phone crap?

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues!

why my S3 cant message or make a call after s3 4.3 update....???? :'(

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues!

My only real gripe is it broke the folder actions that was fixed in a previous update (the 4.1.2 maybe?). I use folders on my home screen with my most used apps. When I open an app in the folder prior to 4.3, when I exited the app or pressed the home button, it would return to the home screen, with the folder closed. Now after the update, when I return to the home screen, the folder is still open. Just takes another tap of the screen or home button to close, but an annoyance nonetheless.

Is anyone else experiencing this, or know of a way to resolve the issue?

I have found the same issue and can't resolve it.

Perhaps if you use a 3rd party launcher?
Action Launcher: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.actionlauncher.playstore

Nova Launcher: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.launcher

Themer: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.mycolorscreen.themer

I use Action Launcher, and used to use Nova Launcher, and I haven't seen that issue with either. Themer is another great launcher.
