Verizon S9+ Unable to set individual SMS notification tones

I haven't gotten a update yet for my s9 plus and I don't have the option so it wasn't the update you got.

According to Samsung, who I am chatting with now, the update they sent out yesterday removed it. Or that's the party line they are sticking to.
They say a future update may bring it back. You just need to wait and see.
So basically it was a feature on the phone for 2 days and then it was removed. According to Samsung

:)

There are several great SMS apps that will give us back this capability. HOWEVER, if you have the Gear S3 you must use the default Samsung messaging app from which they have removed this capability.

I'm using Textra (thanks to the advice on this thread) and I'm having no issues with using it on my Gear S3. Granted I can't open the messaging app to initiate a text, but i can see and reply to notifications.

From Samsung support page after I complained
Thank you for bringing this to our notice. Till now there are no reported issues, I will take this as a note and forward this to our appropriate department to get this addressed.

That does work! I tried a couple of other SMS apps and I kept getting a message "IN order to get notifications on your Gear S3 your default messaging app will be changed to Messages" which is the Samsung default app.

Thanks!

It is not an Oreo issue. It is a Samsung issue. It has worked on every Samsung phone for the past 6 years or more. They have willfully removed the option.
It works on my Pixel 2L, so it is not an Oreo issue. I got rid of the Samsung texting app and installed Google's texting app (the one used on Pixel). Suddenly I can add individual text tones to callers.
So it's not an Oreo issue at all. Since it is now working on my S9 Plus. Samsung simply removed the option on their new phone and are blaming it on software updates.

Samsung's SMS/MMS Messaging app no longer has that option?

Or is it the Samsung's Contacts app?

It used to be in the contacts on Samsung. It is no longer anywhere. They told me last night the software update they pushed on 3/14 got rid of it. They claim it may return in a future update.
If you use Google Message, you can go into the individual text chains and add a special text tone. That is the best I have found for now. It did transfer over all my old text chains from the Samsung Message to the new Google Message.

You mentioned regarding Samsung in your post above, number 37, "Or that's the party line they are sticking to." I loved that! :D My husbands S9 hasn't been updated yet, (I haven't installed the sim or configured the wifi) & the text notification option is not available in the contacts. Sounds like Samsung is giving us a Song & Dance routine. :D

No, Sorry that's not it.

I have T-Mobile also, notifications are no longer listed (that I could find) when you edit the contact. It does list Ringtone & Vibration Pattern which can be edited.

I read in the S8 forums that they thought the feature was deleted in Oreo.

I have t-mobile .. but this is how to do individual contacts ..

go to the contact
edit
scroll down and press view more down arrow
u will see ringtone .. and default ringtone is kind of highlighted .. press it and work from there

my issue is separating text messages from regular notifications .. THAT i need :)

for all who say it was deleted in oreo that is incorrect i just figured out how to change the text message ringtone from general notifications also .. You have to go to the text messages and u will see everyone u text .. From there press the 3 dots on the upper right .... Go to notifications press general notifications ... Right now sound will say default notification sound .. Press that and change it to what you want .. Also back out to notifications and press new messages and then press sound and change it to what you desire to hear ..
Welcome all :)

This isn't what people are asking about. We want the notification for message alerts per contact to be different. That was taken away.

See one missing and one not.

The Contacts app on the Galaxy S9 does not have the ability to set an SMS/MMS alert for the contact. Previous Samsung devices had this ability. This is what people are complaining about.

With the S9, if you want to set an alert for a contact, you have to do it on a per message thread basis within the SMS/MMS app itself instead of at the contact level.
