Waiting for Local Storage

Well, most often I'm the passenger. :p (I'm 14) :

If you are 14 aren't you supposed to be more concerned with changing the radio and being a general nuisance than using a Nexus? Darn kids.

Perhaps I see things differently because I can't read or look at devices inside a vehicle. Many people get car sickness from that. I haven't tried watching movies in a car. To me the only thing I need in a car is music and that's small enough to fit a nice assortment in 2 or 3 gigs.

Someone said watching a movie isn't the same as reading and doesn't cause car sickness. That seems plausible since TV's are so common in vans now.

People who keep saying they have to delete / re-add (micro-manage) files to make space I don't think ever used Google Cloud services.

You "make available offline" or it stays in the cloud. Simple.

Yes we know. And if it stays in the cloud, you need wifi, to download (micro-manage) files or stream. Car trip? Unavailable until you stop at McD's or ?. Plane trip? Either EXPENSIVE wifi connection, or it stays in the cloud, unavailable. Hotel stay? Either EXPENSIVE wifi connection, or it stays in the cloud, unavailable.

Simple.

For somebody that doesn't travel much, the cloud might work fine. Or with a carrier 4G connection on the device, like my phone, with unlimited data. But with the new shared data plans coming out, if you have 5 phones (I do) using data from the cloud, I shudder to think what the overage costs would be.

Otherwise, nope.

I know because it's so hard to find a McDonalds, Burger King, or a Wendy's anywhere, they are a rare site (eye roll). Also what tiny airport are you flying out of that doesn't have free wifi? Or what cheap hotel do you stay at that doesn't have free wifi?

Regardless of all of this, my solution is best just load on it what you will use until you can see a computer again, or until you are within wifi.

You don't need 10s of hours of movies, or weeks worth of music. Nor do you need a ridiculous amount of apps. Treat a tablet like you would a computer and don't bog it down with stuff you aren't using.

Just an observation, but it doesnt seem like you travel too much...

A) Most "free Wifi" at fast food restaurants (in my area at least) have MAYBE a 1mbps download speed and have denied access to some sites. Try waiting and downloading a 700MB file while your kids/co-workers are waiting. I have had to do it when I have left a presentation at the office. Very embarrassing.

B) Most "cheap" hotels DO offer free Wi-fi (at least in the lobby). It's the expensive ones that usually want to charge for it. (for example: The Hyatt in Savannah charges about $20 a day for wi-fi, same with almost every condo in Panama City Beach) Oh yeah, they will allow free WIRED connections, but WIFI costs money. Either way, all of these places (including my work) have blocks to certain websites/databases. I can't even access my iTune account at work (Government).

So, I for one, prefer as much space as possible without having to access the web. Yes, its nice to know that tethering and fast food wifi is available in a pinch (such as forgetting your presentation), but I dont want to rely on doing that when on a trip. Luckily 16GB is usually enough for me to plan accordingly, but an SD card certainly would provide piece of mind.

But thats just my personal opinion. :)

I travel a lot (US Army). I am often in places where there's no WiFi and little to no cell phone coverage. I know why someone needs offline storage. Google drive, Google Music, Drop box, and all the others are great when I am in the States or near civilization, but that is not always the case. Plus it's not like the Government will allow us to download anything to our personal devices on their systems. I also have had to drive cross country and when you do it, you just want to get it over with. You don't feel like spending an extra 15 minutes in McDonalds just 2 get some entertainment for the kids who have been annoying the crap out of you because they are tired of being cramped in a car for 8 hours.

I know why we need sd cards and usb drives.

I hate proving your wrong but it has to be done with you provide no facts and I have all of them.

McDonalds Wifi Speeds

How fast is AT&T Wireless' Wi-Fi service at McDonald?s?
AT&T Wireless' high-speed Internet access is up to 50 times faster than standard dial-up service. Data-transfer rates are up to 11 Mbps for wireless access, however, they also depend upon on the underlying transport rate.

No thats nice to see, i welcome facts.
But the fact is: I have been there / done that. I have first hand experience. Whether they ADVERTISE "up to 11mbps speeds" is irreverent, its what speed you can actually get when there. (funny, in that link, my Zip code doesnt bring up my local speeds - says "Sorry! Can't open the page for you, please contact to DEP SUPPORT Team"). If you ever travel in rural areas, you would know that there is no chance for 11mbps speeds.

I would hope that eventually fast-food wifi rates would grow as technology does. However, I would prefer to not have to rely on them when you have 2 screaming kids / anxious coworkers in the car.

Edit: Just for reference - at a solid 11mbps, that equates to 1.375 MegaBytes per second, meaning that a 700MB movie could be downloaded in just under 9 minutes.

However, at a constant 1mbps (which is what I see when connecting to most free internet in my travel area), it downloads at 0.125 MegaBytes per second - meaning it would take over an hour and a half to download the same file.

Well you can always use your wifi hotspot on your cell. That's basically the only thing i have my cell for, is the free hotspot to use with my nexus 7. Granted it's crappy 3g but it gets the job done :-)

Fine. The new data plans are DESIGNED specifically to get people to limit their data usage. That's completely contrary to the "cloud" design. Use the cloud to stream music and movies and other media. Download documents. Data usage is going to go up, not down. Better buy the most you can. What is VZ new plan? No such thing as unlimited, could get 100GB for how much?

Could get expensive pretty fast.

How bout this, like I said before. Load the content you need for a trip, not an insane amount over the amount you need. If you are to take a 4 hr car trip do you need 20 hrs worth of video? Plus Google Music would work well even with the low end of the speed spectrum.

...Ouch So every 14 year old is now obsessed with the radio and is a pain in the ass on the car?

Alright, 4 hours on the car. Let's just say that's 2 movies at 700mb apiece. If I get the 8gb version, I don't think I will have 1.5gb to spare seeing as the actual allotted storage is 4.5gb. My apps and other content take up more than 3gb.

How about this? In a semi truck that rarely stops, team driving, coast to coast, driving, or sleeping in back as it moves, hauling time sensitive expedited freight ( like Samsung phones) for three weeks at a time. Yeah, I don't think pre loading that 1 or 2 gigs of content is gonna get it. The cloud is not an option. Hell, I'm not happy with the lame storage on my Nexus phone, and it's my only device.
PS, we truckers make Lots of calls as well, our office is on wheels, and problems won't wait.
Google is using design to drive cloud storage, and as much as I'm in love with the Nexus concept, if they don't give me choices, they will lose me. I can flash stock, derp!

Fine, load data for a 4 hour trip. So then you never take car vacations? Or you never travel farther by car than 4 hours? Or you never do anything out of wifi area for more than 4 hours? Cloud is built for you then.

My family and I take car/motorcycle camping vacations that last days. Most camp sites don't offer wifi in our tent or popup camper. I suppose your RV will have satellite internet so you and your wifi will work. But we hike, bike and camp in the back country also, for a 2-3-4 days. We have to carry spare batteries/chargers. We carry our media with couple of extra pounds for all that, no big deal. The GPS will work in open sky, but the cloud is not accessible.

8GB model, as someone mentioned, has 4+GB left after os. You load some apps, that will be gone in a hurry. Believe me, with a tablet, the sizes for apps will grow much larger. Even some of my phone apps are over 30mb now. And each app has a cache for settings, data etc. You'll find out soon on your "4 hour trip" that you will be uninstalling apps and clearing files to have the room for a single standard def movie. Don't even consider HD (but I wouldn't either, what's the point on that form factor, except to connect to big screen)

If you get the minimum storage and use the cloud you will regret, unless you will be using this device minimally. I wouldn't spend a couple hundred dollars to surf the web, listen to music and check email while I'm sipping latte at Starbucks. I can do that on my Rezound. For me, doing that with a Nexus 7 would be a waste of money and good hardware.

NOVA 3 requires 2gb and some Tegra THD games need almost 500mb to run.

Here is a crazy idea, if you are going camping how about leave your technology at home or in the cars. Enjoy allowing companies to rape you for $50 for 8 gb of storage.

EDIT:
The 8 Gb Unit has 5.74 gb of storage left. So stop saying 4 gb.

Here is some more fun info for you

If 8 GB isn't enough, 16 probably won't be either. If this is the case it seems to me as if that $50 extra would be better spent on a high speed 64 gb usb stick and a 1" micro USB cable. At least that was my thought when I preordered the 8 GB model.

I don't think you're going to see a Nexus 7 with an SD Card anytime soon. If that's a deal breaker, you'd probably do wise to look at the Galaxy Tab 2 7 inch model.
