what is condsidered normal battery life?

Go to Anandtech best technically minded reviews. Nothing changed from Razr except the battery so that is what they reviewed.

8.13 hrs 4g screen on constant web browsing Razr Maxx vs 9.85 hrs for 3g iPhone4s
20.84 hrs constant talk time Razr Maxx vs 9.26 for iPhone 4s

AnandTech - Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX Review - 1.8x The Battery

You can also go to their "smartphone database" and compare other phones.

I would be all over the Maxx except for the craptabular display. I have a Inc 2 SLCD is the way to go, Nexus hi res super amoled is good too.

First cant believe no one mention it. Your task killer is helping kill the battery your force it to stop android will just start it back up.

Why use juice defender when
Moto has this feature built and even works better.
In case you have not noticed before, some people lie......They want you wondering why you are not getting the same battery life they are, and they are using it so much heavier than you are. It is because they are liars.

I can get two working days out of my battery (which would be about 36-38 hours), but I am not what you call a heavy user.

My phone is almost always on wifi connection, either at work, or at home, so I rarely use the 3G / 4G radio.

I use my phone for phone calls during the day (about 1-2 hours per day). Other than that, my phone is sitting next to me, and will check my corporate email, and Gmail very regularly.

I do not have any social media apps (like facebook or twitter) because I do not use them.

I have two weather apps installed that update every hour.

Screen brightness set to 0%

When I get home, my phone is on wifi. I usually surf the internet for about 2 hours at night while wife is preparing dinner, or we are just sitting around, or we are watching tv. Then go to bed.

I do use Juice Defender. For comparison, I upgraded from the Droid X, and with the regular 1500 battery that came with the phone, I was able to get 12-15 hours on one charge with the same exact usage.

not sure why the maxx is having such battery issues. I get 2 full days easily with moderate usage (no wimax) mostly wifi, some 3g with EVO 4g and a 1800 mAH battery. low background data syncing/usage.

Jeez, I get about 12-14 on my GSM Nexus with its much smaller battery... and I use the crap out of it.

I figured the MAXX would rule the planet with battery life...

But, battery life is a mysterious beast, alas.

Is it true it tales a few cycles for the battery to work properly cause after about 15 minutes of Pandora... I dropped 8 percent.

10 hours of use today of moderate use and down to 50 percent... Mostly internet.. Full breakxown later... But how does CNET and others claim 18 hours of straight talk time when I cant manage to get this thinf to last.

The biggest killers of battery life will be the screen and voice calls.

On 4G, I get about 4.5 hours of screen on time. This is usually over 12 hours or so.

Haha . . . dictated that to voice recognition, didn't you? The period (.) after extended is a dead giveaway :D

Beat me to it!

Yeah, Motorola told me to do the following tonight, and I am...

1. Fully charge the Maxx
2. Safe Mode the Maxx.
3. Airplane mode the Maxx.
4. Let Maxx sit for 6-7 hours overnight without using it.
5. Report back to Moto the list of battery suckers...

Game on, g'night!

Ohh, and I have a brand new Maxx sitting at VZW, went there today and they said try what Moto told me and they will hold the Maxx as long as I like to see if I need it...

I don't know why you are ignoring items some of us have pointed out:

- That app you use for work is a GPS machine, and is probably what is killing your battery. Even if the app isn't open, I'm willing to bet its running in the background and still hitting GPS.
- It appears you don't have a great signal, even on 3G (based on your previous phone getting not great reception). Even if your MAXX shows more bars, its better radio may be just working harder (see: using more battery life) to get that decent signal. Thus, using that signal for anything will kill the battery (same goes for GPS too).

Also, is your screen brightness all the way up? If you use your phone outside a lot, I assume it is.

As we said, give it a few cycles and see what happens. 8% for 15 minutes of Pandora isn't good, but, again, if you're just on a weak 3G signal vs. strong 4G/wifi, then that could be your issue. If the issues continues after your 3rd or 4th charge, then consider another trade-in or figure out what you can do to improve the battery life.

The batteries aren't magic. If it needs to give more juice to make your phone work the way you're asking it to, then it will.

I will be waiting for your report back. I just sent my Maxx back for a brand new replacement, for not that great of a battery life versus my wife's brand new Maxx. Purchased the same time, one from Verizon and the other from Target Mobile. Just about the same usage but she was getting at least 6 hours or more of battery life with very similar setups (I set hers up and let her know what to do) and usage times. I was only getting 12-15 hours max and she was averaging 20-26 hours, with very similar usage. New Maxx should be here within a week or so.

I would also consider us moderate users
- 4g always on, decent coverage area
- wifi for about half of the total usage time
- Live wallpaper
- GPS off
- Screen down to 0% brightness or whatever the lowest setting is
- 1 hour sync to FB
- Words with friends light usage
- Accuweather
- Pandora and that stupid mediaserver seem to be the biggest culprits thus far for me at least

FML, was expecting waay more out of this phone, hopefully the replacement is better for me, I'm not liking my wife right now either, lol.

After 10 hours and 11 minutes in the idle - safe mode/airplane mode and sitting overnight here are my percentages:

Idle 49%
Android OS 35%
Display 6%
Android System 4%
Com.Motorola.home 3%
Alarm 2%

I lost 22% of my battery without even using the phone other than to turn off my alarm twice... ODD!

If the stand by is 350+ hours, using basic math in safe mode/airplane mode which means no signal and no apps running, I am looking to get ~40 hours of life in complete stand by...

Anyone have anything to add here? I am stumped...

Ok I think I got my Maxx last Wed.
Did the full batt drain til my phone shut
down...............
This past Sunday I got about 14 hours with heavy usage. Network turned off.
Yesterday morning 4:30am I unplugged my phone fully charged I left network off
moderate usage screen full brightness I woke today up checked my phone at 4:30am
50% batt....
Did a call this morning playing a game with intense graphics..... 6:30 am batt is at 40%
Also enabled data and background data trying to knoc the batt down to 20%
Soooo we are talking 26 hrs....
The first Maxx I had I was pretty much getting the same batt life and that was with
data on (no background data)

Battery life can be a tricky item to decipher, as it depends on a lot of factors with cell phones: usage, signal strength, radios, apps, background items, etc.

If you are unhappy with the battery life you're getting and think it could/should be better, then call Verizon and switch the phone out. If your second phone gets the same battery life, that's a tough decision. The chances of getting two bum batts is small, so I'd say its more likely how you're using the phone.

With my DInc, and being on wifi for 85-90% of the average day, I can usually get about 20 hours of use between charges (with mostly FB, Gmail, Twitter, some FourSquare, Internet, and Texting, and I'd classify it as low-end moderate usage). So, if I get my Maxx and don't, at least, get upwards of 28 hours with my typical usage, I will be disappointed (my expectation is on the low end, because I don't know how good 4G is here). So, if after a few charge cycles I'm only getting 18 hours, charge-to-charge, with my typical usage, the phone will be getting sent back.

It's really a relative situation. But, again, if your phone is dropping 20% overnight from just sitting on the nightstand, that's definitely an issue that should be addressed. My DInc doesn't drop more than 10 percent overnight, sitting with radios/data on and screen off.

Agreed, Moto has elevated my case to the tier 2 technical support, on the call with them now... If they say to switch it out, then I am... I will be curious to finish this call and see what they say. I'll keep the boards posted!

I know from experience that signal strength plays a HUGE role in battery life. I usually charge my phone at night but forgot to the other day and made it 38 hours before hitting 20% with what I would consider moderate use (4 hours of screen usage) but I was in an area with a constant 4 bars of 4G service. Yesterday though while at Disneyland I was only able to get 12 hours of usage before the low battery warning came on with less than an hour of screen time because it was constantly trying to connect and good not maintain a good connection.

Ok, so I am entering 1 hour with Moto Tech support. The purpose of the call is the over night draining of ~25% while idle with everything off.... They proceeded to tell me that Wi-Fi, Data and bluetooth will drain the battery... REALLY? Come on... I asked them to focus on my reason for asking for help...

Back on hold with the"Tech support" team, but I think I might have more brains than these folks....
