When will Google fix Android's fragmentation?

Fragmentation will be fixed in approximately 2011 or 2012 on Google's end. On the carrier and OEM side, it'll be fixed when people stop buying into the model that they have to have garbage devices on garbage contracts with exclusive nonsense.

Dude we are just talking about phones calm down. I was just trying to get people's thoughts on things.
If you wanted a simple answer you should have mentioned that in you OP. Android is not going to give you what you are asking for. Simply because of the way it works.

It is true that iOS cheats a bit with version numbers. Devices get updated, but features are dropped for older hardware so it's the same version number, but not the same software. Sometimes this is for hardware reasons (like the fingerprint scanner) but sometimes it seems to be just because they want people to buy a new device.
There is no reason the iPhone 4 should not have gotten turn by turn navigation. The hardware was clearly capable of supporting it.

But the real point I wanted to get across is that not all iOS devices will get the same features just because they have the same version number. The iPhone 4 got an "iPhone 4 version" of iOS7...it did not get the same iOS7 that newer phones got. Fragmentation does exist on iOS.

I've had my ga3 since it came out. I run nova launcher prime on it. I am familiar with what a custom rom can do for me. I am not ignorant of the subject. I got the phone because it was different at the time from everything else. As time went on I realized that I don't need most of the features Android offers.
Then there is no reason to buy an Android phone. If you just need basic features, and you do not mind the premium, buy an iPhone.

I doubt you will be happy on Windows Phone. Their app situation is far worse than Android, and I think that was one of the things you said that you liked about iOS.

The vibe I've been getting is that Android is superior in all categories. Apple is the work of the devil. If you didn't buy a nexus you have no right to complain. I realize this is an Android based forum, but come on no one has given thought to switching to IOS?

Do you believe that Android has any flaws?
Yes. There is a lot of room for improvement in UI optimization for example. Even in Vanilla Android.

Your bad experiences have to do with Samsung, not Android. You bought a Galaxy S3, which is burdened with Samsung's additional crap on it. A lot of people still buy Samsung products despite this because Samsung does make good hardware.

If you want the optimal Android experience you'll need to stick with Nexus devices. They will allow you to get the timely updates you are looking for.

Not all, but most. Apple apps are going to be more polished, and the UI is going to be faster in general. There are fundamental differences in the way that each platform handles the UI and Multi-tasking.

In most areas, Android is going to be better. Certainly in features. But if you really don't care about features, you should probably go with an iPhone. It's going to have better support.

Thats the reality. You are complaining about something google can't control. Google cannot force Samsung to do things the way you want them done...they don't own Samsung. Google only has full control over Nexus products.

Marketshare numbers don't lie. There is a really good reason Android is stomping Apple in marketshare now, despite the fact that Apple had a 3 year head start.

Anyone who thinks any OS is flawless is either blinded by fanboyism or is not tethered to reality--perhaps both.

The trick is figuring out which compromises you are willing to make in choosing an OS.

Android is superior in all categories

Not even close in all categories, but I'd wager a guess that either it's better in a very important category or in most categories for most forums members (a very small subset of Android users).

Apple is the work of the devil

There's probably a bit of a lingering over-reaction to the Android vs iOS flame wars of the trolls of old... ;)

If you didn't buy a nexus you have no right to complain.

This isn't true - many people, especially in 2012, didn't know what a Nexus was. It wasn't actually that popular and if you were new to Android and/or smartphones, how could you know? Now that Nexus is more popular, hopefully people see the benefits as a more valuable option than some of the other devices out there - but a lot of people like the game that the OEM's bring and we want them to be aware of the tradeoffs. You should buy what you want. We may disagree on what makes a device good or bad or whatever and I may want something different, but you shouldn't buy what I want unless it's what you want too...

I've played with iOS (not a lot, but I have about 60 hours logged) and for me it made me appreciate Android more, reinforced a few preconceptions and laid many others to rest. iOS isn't bad, it's just different. Most of the moderators and ambassadors here either currently or have previously owned iOS and Android devices and many members have crossed over from one side to the other (sometimes multiple times). Apple is playing a different role and it's very good for some people and rubs others completely the wrong way. Having the choice is important to me.

I don't use any Apple products or services, and I haven't since 1998. They've never been the right choice for me for a variety of reasons.

iOS is lovely, but it's not for me. People in these forums almost all have Androids because they chose them, not because they aren't aware of the alternatives. The reason that there are multiple platforms is that none is right for everybody. Each has virtues and drawbacks. But of course around AC, most people prefer Android.

I just wonder over time will manufacturers begin to think about separating themselves from Android. Like Samsung may do with Tizen.

In the long run, all bets are off, but in the short- to medium-term, it's a matter of ecosystems. Google, Microsoft, and Apple have them, and masses of people are already heavily invested therein. In a service-based world like mobile, going your own way is extraordinarily difficult. I don't think we'll see new major players in this space anytime soon. Then again, technology can be disruptive: the future none can know.

I have to wonder if Android would stay the biggest OS if Samsung left them behind.

Over a long time it'd definitely have an impact.. more importantly, there are other things that can change Android's standing in less time that are far more likely.
