which insurance did you guys go with?

Go for it. Like I said if that works for you. I have never had cancer or serious injury either but I have health insurance. Do you put your no insurance money away in a safe just in case? What I am getting at is that is just not a good recommendation for most people. Insurance buys piece of mind but to each his/her own. I just hate seeing people come in with smashed screens or stolen phones with no insurance. Esp younger college kids. Beer and cell phones = bad. Lol.

i'm not saying its for everyone. and health insurance is completely different. we're talking about a phone that cost 4x what the insurance cost at the maximum. healthcare cost way more than 4x. i'm just letting people know their options, and i have supported all my claims as far as i am concerned. if you correct me i will retract my statement because i do not wish to falsely inform anyone.

He said what if you broke it this month. That's $99 deductible and $7 for monthly.

thats quite an unfair view since that would give you the absolute lowest pricing on what you would have paid on the insurance.

Squaretrade

$600 coverage w/ $50 deductible
2yr w/ ADH

$99

this would be more fair and thats at least $150.

I plan on dropping insurance after a year. But my thing is I don't have $600 to just pay. Nor do I want to downgrade.

Even after 12 months it is still only $183 to replace the Thunderbolt. Why pay $200 to downgrade?

Right on. I would just say from my 8 years exp that most people are not good with their phones. In fact most people are awful with them. Hahahaha. I see so many people talking on them in puring rain. Once I was at a Hokies game during a hurricane type storm and you would not believe how many people had their phones out taking pictures. You know what you are doing and change phones often. Most people do not and need protection from themselves and others. But I hear ya.

I've never worried about insurance for past phones but I think I'll be going the Squaretrade route for this one. Cracked screens make me weep and accidents happen.

The thing is, if you shop around (craigslist), the phone will never be $600. It will be $500 at highest because retail is $600. Also with the rate of new phones coming out, the rate that the price drop is significant. Now with the 14 day return policy, the going rate on these phones will drop even faster. For example, a new phone MSRP at $600 will be on craigslist for $500 until around the end of the return policy (30 days before the new policy but only 14 days now). From there on it will drop about $100 in that follow month and another $100 by the second month. This puts it at $300. Lets say you need to replace a phone at 6 month mark, you will be paying $7x6=$42 +$99 (and i'm pretty sure there is probably tax on it) = $141$. In this case you would save around $169. Each month you dont break your phone this amount you would possibly save would decrease. In a year whatever phone you get now will be worth $100ish. Just look at the Droid 1.

Another thing, these has to be more money going into insurance (such as the phone insurance) then they are paying out in order for them to stay in business.

I guess I dont know what the average person does or their knowledge about a phone is so my statements may seem wild. Most of my friends are pretty tech savvy which includes phones. So I'll say it with a bit more emphasis, take what i say with a grain of salt unless you know what you're doing with your phones :P

sorry for all the edits, sticky keyboard so i keep spotting typos

At 12 months, the thunderbolt will not cost more than $200 on craigslist (in fact it will probably be cheaper than $183). So with that assumption, at 12 months, I would save money regardless.

I'm not so sure about that. Last month I couldn't find a Droid X for under $200. It held its value I guess.

droid x came out in july, it hasn't been a year yet.

droid incredible came out april 29th, so its close to a year and its already being sold at $175.

thats jsut because it was so popular. look at the fascinate, its being sold at $200 and it came out 6 months ago. at 8 months it will be $150 or less.

just saying that insurance is only worth it in the first 8 month or so and if u dont use it u wasted money in a sense but if it buys u a peace of mind then it may not be a waste...

Had a few semi-close calls with the TB already (worst was nearly slamming the car door on my jacket-- which had the phone in my pocket) so I added the insurance for now. I figure I'll keep it on for a year or so and then cancel the insurance. I really babied my last phone and only dropped it a couple of times in 6 years but with a much bigger phone (and lots of glass involved) I don't think the TB will be quite as rugged.

I went with the insurance through Verizon because of the lost/stolen aspects and the time to replace-- I love Squaretrade but am not sure about the length of time I'd be without a phone in their plan.

I figure with my luck buying the insurance is the ONLY way to guarantee I won't do anything stupid with the phone! :)

Thats all insurance to me. Its like Chris Rock said I understand I am paying you in case some crap happens. Now when no crap happens..... shouldn't I get some money back!? Lol. But when crap does happen you are covered.

But thats not a bad plan. Keep it until you see the cost of it new on ebay etc go down to a point where its ok to get rid of it. If you pay the monthly option that is.
