Which Messaging App?

Re: Which Messaging App

The developer has been pretty good at listening to peoples comments on Textra lately so that's cool. I wonder if he will be putting android wear support on Textra. I figured the stock messeging app is not going to get updated to get support so I'll have to go 3rd party if I do get a smartwatch. If the developer decides to only support it on Chomp, I may have to give that a try.

They are going to update Textra so that you can once again customize the chat bubble colors. I emailed them and complained about them taking it away. They wrote back and said many people have complained and they are listening to their users.

Re: Which Messaging App

I'm back on Textra. I missed the notification texting too much while I was away and I've gotten used to the new design. I really did like the old one though. I look forward to customizing the user bubbles again.

Re: Which Messaging App

I was a big fan of textra on my old phone... But on the g3 am using stock. I like it! Customization is perfect for me. Lovin' the g3!

Re: Which Messaging App

I use hangouts but for the life of me I cannot figure out why all the pictures I attach from my phone turn landscape instead of the way I took them.. Has anyone else noticed that and figured out a fix??

Re: Which Messaging App

I'm using Handcent, but had to restore version 6.0 from backup as the last couple of updates won't work for me. The app shuts down immediately upon trying to open it.

I'm wondering if anyone using Handcent is using a version after 6.0 on a rooted LG G3.

I know it works for some people on the G3, and wonder what is different in my case that it won't even open. (I have tried the usual things such as deleting cache, uninstalling, and even deleting every sub-directory I could find which has any Handcent files before trying to install the latest version.)

Did you a clearing the system cache partition? Different from apps caches.

Do you mean deleting the cache partition? Not having a custom recovery program, and Nandroid backup, I haven't tried doing this, not knowing if there is any risk.

There's no risk to personal data. But it can take a few minutes.

Re: Which Messaging App

I just tried deleting the cache partition. It didn't make any difference. Handcent 6.05 still will not open. Handcent 6.0 works fine when restored with Titanium Backup.

Re: Which Messaging App

Speaking of message apps: Hangouts

Has anyone noticed they have a message in Hangouts from "unknown sender" from a random date, that they can't seem to get rid of? It seems to be somehow connected to voice mail (I don't actually have any new voice mail of course). I have a G2 and a G3 and I'm seeing this random message "stuck" in Hangouts on both devices. When I delete the message, it just reappears, sometimes almost instantly. I've tried archiving it as well, which seems to work for a while, but it eventually seems to pop up again. Tried clearing cache, data, restarting phone, battery pull. Nothing seems to remove this message from Hangouts on either device. I've seen a couple of people online that have also had this problem and can't seem to find a solution.

Re: Which Messaging App

I'm using Handcent also. I've been using it for years.

The main reason I use Handcent is I love how it pops up a window on the lock screen with new text messages and I can reply right there without even unlocking my phone. To me that's the golden feature.

I've tried Version 6, but although I didn't have any of the issues some people are having, I did find it a tad laggy. So I searched online for the previous version, 5.9.1 I think, and just sideloaded the APK.

That's what I don't get while reading user comments on new versions of apps on the play store. People say the newer version of whatever app is terrible and they're going to stop using it. Well duh....just google search the previous version APK and go back to that. Case closed. Guess some people just don't have the smarts to do that.

Sorry to hear it. You should tell the Dev and maybe they'll fix it. Their email is at the bottom of their download page.

There's no way of knowing a side loaded app will be the original apk or something another party loaded with something bad.

They just did an update and I don't see the customized chat bubble colors option. All that change was the color of the Textra icon. It went from green to blue.

I've tried emailing a couple of times. No response. I also note that their Facebook page has multiple complaints and no responses.

Makes me nuts when they (don't) do that. :-) Oh well.

Restoring an old version from backup, as I did, is another solution which is also safer--no risk of it containing malware. However, while a working solution, I wouldn't say "case closed." There is still one problem with using an old version.I can no longer use the "update all" option in the Google store, or it will replace the working copy with the new copy. It takes longer to have to update each program individually.

I tried disconnecting my copy of Handcent from the market several times using Titanium Backup. It works for a while, but after a couple of days it will somehow reconnect and download the new version. Then I have to restore the old version from backup again.

(I'm thinking of trying to move a copy of the version I'm using elsewhere, uninstalling from the market, and then side loading the copy to see if I can fool Google into no longer thinking I have a copy to update. I haven't tried this yet--there is a limited amount of time I've devoted to this issue and have first concentrated on seeing if there is any way I can fix things so the current copy will work.)

Re: Which Messaging App

I certainly agree with this. You need nothing more advanced than Hangouts.

It's a great way to connect with other stuff.

I know, I was disappointed in that update. But they assured me they are fixing it. Maybe they will soon.
