Who is upgrading to S24 Ultra?

I think the thing that has changed my outlook on smartphone addiction, at least always buying a new device or upgrading every year is when you meet someone irl who has the itch to upgrade phones more than you. It makes it look ridiculous. I don't judge this guy, he can spend his money however he wants. But it made me realize my problem or how I could change my outlook on it.

I don't want to be constantly adding on more devices and debt into my life to distract me away from spending actual quality time with people. I definitely connect with my friends through the phone and sharing videos with them. But I'd rather my phone be a tool. I still love smartphones and tech and podcasts devoted to tech. But only for the purposes of learning how to get the most out of my device.

It seems I go through this cycle every year where I realize my addiction to smartphone tech but then somewhere along the line, I regress a little bit. But this time it feels different. I'm very satisfied with my S23 ultra. If there were bugs or slowdowns, I'd feel differently.

Also, when the Pixel 8 pro came out, I felt the same after my poor experience with the Pixel 7 pro. I just didn't care about it or believe the hype and ads surrounding it.

I'm happy for everyone who is upgrading to the latest phones. I don't judge anyone for wanting a new phone every year. If that's what you're into and what makes you happy, go for it.
Yeah, that's always been my thing. If you want something and can afford it, go for it.

I'm currently in the privilidged position that I just buy my crazy unnecessary crap outright. my bank account is currently in the black and it will still be in the black when the money for the S24u goes out.

Problems come when you're going into debt or not paying bills so you can buy this stuff. I've got a friend who is always getting new stuff on contract and then selling it because he over extends himself. He will be paying off the galaxy watch 6 he recently had to sell for probably the next 18-24 months...He's actually paid pretty well, he just keeps painting himself into the corner. You have to be able to recognise your limits.

Although Samsung offers $750 for an S23 ultra, Verizon says my device isn't eligible to trade in, even though they claim to offer $1000 for "any" device.

I already said I'm not upgrading but I do like to compare the deals. Plus I hate the idea of being stuck with the same phone for 36 months as they are bill credits spread out over that time. There's no way in hell I would do that.

But I'm just curious as to why Verizon says my device isn't eligible. I am financed through Samsung with it.

Possibly because it's not paid off?

I was looking at doing the reverse. Just investigating it.
Hmmm. Makes me wonder what the deal would be w/ Xfinity Mobile. I'll ✔️ it out. ;-)
It could be different now ..also was traded in for the unlocked pay full price with trade in offset ..
Our Xfinity Mobile deals for upgrading to S24's are:

S23 Ultra –to– S24 Ultra:
"Save $800 where you trade it in"
"Estimated monthly payment estimate of $20.83 reflects 0% APR when paying over 24 months"
$20.83 x 24 months = $499.92 – "Includes $800 off" – "Estimated delivery date: Jan 31"
–or–
"Pay in full price" = "$1,299.99 due today"

S23 Plus –to– S24 Plus:
"Save $800 where you trade it in"
"Estimated monthly payment estimate of $8.33 reflects 0% APR when paying over 24 months"
$8.33 x 24 months = $199.92 – "Includes $800 off" – "Estimated delivery date: Jan 31"
–or–
"Pay in full price" = "$999.99 due today"

🤔 . . . which doesn't make much sense, for why would they be willing to discount them so much for financing them over 24 months?! 🤔

EDIT . . .
After speaking with an Xfinity rep (somewhere btwn the Phillipines and India, from the sound of their very annoying, typical background noises —that not only makes it hard to understand them, but also hard to even think—while you're trying to talk to them), there's lots of penalties for upgrading early! Such as (in our case):

> 'Early upgrade fee' = $70. (for Samsung's)

> 'You can become eligible for a device upgrade; once you’ve paid off 50% or more on your current device, you’ll be eligible for a device upgrade. Note: Upgrading to a new device will stop the promotional monthly credits being applied on your current device.'
So . . .
> paying-off our 'promotional credits' on our S23U would cost an additional $374.29 (+$70.)
> paying-off our 'promotional credits' on our S23+ would cost an additional $303.73 (+$70.)

Bottom line:
S23 Ultra –to– S24 Ultra . . a significant loss; not worth doing

S23 Plus –to– S24 Plus . . with the 'early upgrade' penalties, an S24+ would cost approx $633.64 (w/ $8.33/mo payments over 24 months). Currently I owe $586.91 on my S23+.

it makes perfect sense. This is the new version of a contract to lock you in to paying for the service for 2 years...

I pulled the trigger too. 750 trade in for S23U, 150 Samsung credit for accessories, healthcare credit,, got blue S24 U 512gb unlocked for 550. I get 12% rebate from Rakuten too.
Same everything (edu discount) except my total was $502. Probably different tax rate.

Have u seen any unboxing for the blue color? I haven't. I guess the Samsung exclusives aren't being shipped out as review units.

Katrina no I have not seen any unboxing for blue yet. It looks in photos to be similar to blue on s23ultra. I actually almost got violet it was very pretty. But blue is my favorite color. Then purple.

Blue was my 2nd first choice lol. I was set on grey until I saw the contrasting black frame and cameras on the blue. Violet and grey seem to be the favorites this year.

Although, a 24 month contract w/ 0% is no big deal to be locked into; especially if your monthly pymnt amounts and overall cost decreases.

Frankly, I don't see why anyone should or would want to upgrade from an S23U to the S24U. 🤔

I agree. I'm not planning to upgrade this year, but I have been upgrading yearly for a while now, and when I got out of the Note 9, I had to give up the remaining bill credits to pay it off early.
I've been buying unlocked directly from Samsung ever since. The trade-in values and extra freebies were enough that it was worth it to me. Well, except the S22 Ultra trade in sucked, but then the S22 Ultra sucked...
I am glad that the S23 Ultra is so good. I don't feel a need to trade up yet.
Maybe there will be a good deal later on this year. Or maybe I'll go to the Fold 6. Maybe I'll wait for the S25 Ultra.
Being locked in to 36 months of credits isn't for me. It's a good deal, if you are one to keep your phone that long anyway. You can't argue with $1,000 credit.
