Why are people buying a SCREEN PROTECTOR??!

From what I understand, the Evo does NOT have Gorilla Glass, but rather a different type of scratch resistant glass. If HTC was using Gorilla Glass, I think they would advertise it as a feature.

I do have a couple small scratches on my screen. They are impossible to see when the screen is on, and I have to hold the phone at just the right angle to see them when the screen is off, but they are there.

it would all depend...... Some one wrote on this forum once that it had Gorilla Glass and other people said it didn't. I sent an e-mail to HTC and the Makers of Gorilla glass at Corning.... HTC just said they could not confirm or deny (Like they were in Congress or the Senate) and Corning said they do not discuss who their partners are but they could tell me that their product is used by over 150 different MFG's in the world.....

I have never seen or heard HTC or Sprint say it has Gorilla glass and none of the spec sheets show that either...

As for screen protectors... You know if you want to use one then do it... They are $10 - 20 depending on what you use.... Chump change really.. If you want to go naked then so be it.... If your @$$ burns don't complain you were naked.... Why any one would question what other people want to do..

Why do people buy bottled water when you can get it free out the faucet? To each his own......

Nothing stays perfect forever, but I for one personally like the feel of the naked screen much better than one with a screen protector on. I am only going to have this phone for one year, maybe 2 years.... and I am pretty careful with my phones, so I am not too worried. Even my Pres plastic screen is barely scratched.

Personal preference, that's all it boils down to.

I've read this whole post so far. If you want a screen protector, great! If you don't, great! Gorilla glass or not, it is still mostly a personal preference. Whatever makes the owner feel better, right? Its your phone, put on it whatever you want to. Everybody is different.

Peace of Mind...that's it.

I love my Ghost Armor on my Evo, I don't freak out if my keys are touching my phone. Or if their are coins in the same pocket.

The more I come on these forums the more I see android users are just as ill-informed as iPhone users. Why do 'dumb people' use 'smart phones'... I will never understand.

Dude you need to chill out. Posts like the reason people are hesitant to join a community like this. We're here to help and give opinions- you can do both without name calling and personal attacks.

That said, I had my Evo for about a week and it already had a light scratch on the screen- that and the reduction in fingerprints/grease on the screen a protector provides made it a worthwhile investment in my eyes. If you don't want to use one, don't use one. To each his own.

New android users.... don't believe the crap posted in this thread. If any of these obsessive fanboy who have evos right now which meant they would have to preorder like crazy or wait in line for hours were to get a scratch they would return thrift phones. There are countless videos showing people taking a razor blade to an evo and not scratching the screen try somehow I'm supposed to believe a story about grains of sand leaving a long scratch on the screen? Please.... I have personally dropped my evo so many damn times I can't even recall. I have dents and scratches everywhere but the screen. These fictitious stories to cover up ignorant buying are horrendous. Screen protector not needed.

So a scratch on your screen makes you an obsessive fanboy?

The screen may be scratch RESISTANT but it's not scratch PROOF. The scratches in my screen are hardly noticeable, but that doesn't mean they aren't there. You have to hold the phone at just the right angle to see them, but they are there. I'm not obsessing about it, just stating a fact.

Also, my girlfriend had her Evo fall out of its case (the white one from Sprint) and it landed flat on a concrete floor, it now has a few tiny scratches in the screen as well.

Neither of us have screen protectors so I cant really be covering up "ignorant buying".

Oh, and I diidn't "preorder like crazy or stand in line for hours". On launch day, I walked into my local Sprint store about 7 PM and asked if they had any left. Just so happened they did.

I had a scratch on my evo. It happened while on my way to Long Beach. I stuffed my evo into my pocket which also had my laptop cord.

Insta-scratch!

Shortly thereafter I ordered my phantom skinz complete kit which also protects the sides which would benefit alot of members here rockin those hard shell cases that flex and bend on their phones giving them scratches everywhere.

Werx, what do you think glass is made out of? Sand. Razor blades and the other props from those videos aren't as high on the hardness scale as glass is, so no, they're not going to scratch your screen. But I can speak from firsthand knowledge that sand in your pocket + glass screen = Scratched screen. It also does not take that much sand, just a couple of grains floating around in your pocket while you're walking and it will scratch.

My Zagg helps with glare and with fingerprints...BIG TIME.

I don't care for its rubbery feel but I think its a fair trade off...

This.

Sharpness isn't what determines if something will scratch your screen. It's all about hardness. Go outside and grab a rock with some quartz in it and run it across your screen- dull as it may be, I promise it will destroy your screen- even if your scissors didn't. There are plenty of extremely hard minerals that are all around us which can easily find their way into your pocket and scratch whatever glass thing you have in it- even in extremely small quantities.

But hey, to each his own. Don't use one if you don't want to- but don't go running around uninformed screaming about how scratch-proof the giant piece of glass in your pocket is.

Exactly. Go find a piece of jewelry with a diamond and run that across your screen a few times. Then see what your screen looks like.

Werx: The provocative tone of your posts and the name calling does not fit in with the spirit of the forums. Please reconsider the way you word things.

Trolling - Do not engage in repeated attempts to start arguments, harass users, or draw users into a fight just for the sake of it.

And from my experience there is no such thing as glass that doesn't scratch, Gorilla or otherwise. If you disagree, I'm wondering if you would mind placing a few pieces of sand on a microfiber cloth and then rub your screen with it, and then post your results. The fine scratches that people - including myself - have experienced/reporting are not made up. I am extremely gentle with mine, yet somehow I almost always end up with small hairline scratches after a period of use.

P.S. - If you guys are interested in more information about Gorilla Glass, you can visit their website.

And here's a quote from their product description:

Gorilla? Glass for Hand Held Devices

Gorilla glass provides damage resistance and improves the lifespan of portable display devices. The mobility of electronic devices is driving the need for durable cover glass on handhelds, and Gorilla glass offers a more scratch-resistant, durable and pristine viewing quality.

I'm sure that the screen (whatever it is made of) does scratch. However, I haven't had a scratch on a device that I have owned in about three years. I dint use screen protectors but I do use skins. There are certain rules that I follow to reduce the chances if a scratched screen. I rarely put my phone in my pocket, but if I do, I make sure that there is no change or keys or anything that may be able to scratch it in my pocket. I dont put my phone face down and I am careful how I handle it. Therefore, it isn't necessary for me to have a screen protector. But I can see why others would want one. For those like me who want to be able to sell their devices when it comes time to get a new one, a screen protector is a good investment. You are able to get top dollar if you are able to indicate that your device is scratch free.

I got a scratch on my evo from loose change on my pocket I think. Therefore I put on a screen protector. Period.

Don't know if the EVO has Gorilla glass or not. But Gorilla glass is a trademark of Corning. It's not the ONLY hardened, scratch resistant glass available. Other companies make similar products.

Whatever it is, it's clearly (no pun intended) highly scratch resistant:

But like others have said, it's a personal choice. No one should be insulted because of their choice to use, or not use, one.
