Why are people buying a SCREEN PROTECTOR??!

i wanna see all these videos of people taking a razor blade or a sharp pocket knife and putting pressure on the screen.

Well, you may have your foot-in-mouth and not the person starting this post. The Evo does have Gorilla glass. Ask Sprint or HTC.

Hi. I work for Sprint. To my knowledge no the evo does not have gorilla glass. It was never mentioned in the very extensive training we went through ot in any of the literature regarding the phone. It would be safe to say that if it was gorilla glass sprint would have liked to make that fact well known.

The way I see it is if a $15 screen protector and a $20 case mean I don't have to pay the $100 deductible to replace a broken phone than its well worth it. I need the phone for work and any downtime could mean losing money.

Having to replace the phone because the display got scratched to hell is a waste of time and money on something that can be easily avoided.

I also admit that I am not the most gentle person when it comes to my cell phone. I don't abuse them intentionally, that's just how it always seems to be.

Please note that this is how I treat all if my devices and am not saying anyone here is right or wrong and that it is a personal preference.

Sent from my HTC Evo 4G

I'm very interested in this topic as I have not used a screen protector but have been thinking about one.

Not that I'm not worried about scratches, but, my concern is the glass shattering altogether if I drop the phone from a reasonable height. Would a screen protector prevent shattering?

I sent HTC an email before, and they said it was Gorilla Glass. This was before the EVO was released, and I was not a member of these forums yet. I did not keep that email. So I sent another email to HTC asking if they can tell me which kind it was. If they reply (about a 25% chance) I will let you know.

The more I come on these forums the more I see android users are just as ill-informed as iPhone users. Why do 'dumb people' use 'smart phones'... I will never understand.

Rofl...research is a good thing mkay.

The main reason people buy screen protectors is because people like me sell them!

By the way I own one too.( Invishield)

I installed an Invisible Shield by ZAGG and it IMPROVED the touch screen performance.
I play World War and Vampires Live and I always had a problem highlighting the "Do IT" buttons. Since the shield installation one push and it has connected each time. If I knew it would do this I would have bought one just for that feature. I no longer have to push any app buttons more than once to activate :D

I thought this thread was stupid when I read it yesterday but for the people on here that are on the fence and reading this, I have something to add. I have a ZAGG on my evo with a Platinum case (the front and back one) which took a nasty fall yesterday. It bounced off the corner of my Granite counter with screen down and then flip flopped its way onto the tile a few times before reaching a halt. I had that feeling in my gut thinking it was a holiday weekend and TEP wasnt going to get me a replacement soon enough to cover me since I use my phone a lot for work. I bent down, picked my phone up, and everything was fine. Would it have survived without the Zagg and case, maybe & maybe not but I will take the slight rubber feel for the piece of mind it gives me. I prefer naked and agree with most people when they give the reasons why they leave it that way but for me, the added protection is worth any downside. Just like others have said also, a little Sand in the pocket which is normal here in Florida and my screen will look like crapola.

i don't know or don't care about whether or not the evo has gorilla glass.

the fact of the matter is that my first evo got about 6 minor scuffs. never dropped. my current evo has nothing because it has had a screen protector since day one.

enough said.

Call it what you want but I have seen my fair share of scratched screens of various forums. For $20 it's cheap insurance.(or even cheaper depending on what you get) I'll get my $20 back and them some when I sell it next year with a perfect screen.

this thread is full of insults so im going to delete every insulting post. please try to show some respect and understanding towards others, even if you do not agree with what they are saying. if you know someones info is wrong, is it better to insult them or educate them so they understand where they were wrong.

put it this way, would you like somebody to say "Your a (enter insulting name). You don't know what you are saying and should put down you android phone and never pick it back up". or "i can see where you are coming from but here is a site i have come across stating that..... and this is how it works." get the point.

if this keeps going downhill after the cleanup then the thread will be closed with possible infractions handed out. be courteous to your fellow members.

We are debating SCREEN PROTECTORS not CASES. I doubt ANY of you have dropped it the amount that I have just because I had a replacement coming in so I didn't give 2 craps about the one I had. I literally dropped the funk out it just to see what would happen - I have a platinum case I got from BB. The screen is scratch resistant - period. I kept mine in my pocket with keys, change etc. All these ficticious bullcrap stories are for people to get scared and buy useless screen protectors. Instead of listening to us why don't you just do a test yourself. You can always swap the phone out. I have - and NO SCRATCHES.

I always thought Screen Protectors were dumb until I stupidly put my Pre in my keys pocket and made a nice sized gash. I learned my lesson and picked up the cheap HTC protectors when I purchased my EVO for 'just in case' extra shielding.

This is my last warning before serious actions will be taken. Be civil to each other and discuss the topic, don't ridicule others.

My Evo has not had any screen protector since day one and I have no scratches....then again, I baby it.

You can't compare the EVO's screen to the Pre's screen. Two screens completely in different leagues.

I use a screen protector to protect the screen & they do a good job. The screen does have oil residue buildup or smudges. Its nothing an alcohol wipe wont clean. It keeps the screen looking almost new when I sell the phone to upgrade...The 4.00 I spend on Ebay for 5 screen protectors nets me atleast 50-100 extra when I sell the phone.

While I agree the point is 'Accidents Happen' and I'd rather put a $9 clear protector on my screen even if I don't need it for peace of mind.

I have already posted, but thought I'd give some perspective from someone who has perpetual GAS (gear acquisition syndrome ;)).

Back in the day, Palm and Pocket PC devices used resistive touch screens. Because they were resistive (i.e. needed pressure to register touch), they were often made of far less durable materials like plastic and often subjected to much more abrasion (i.e. styli). A screen protector even then was not necessary, but if you didn't want your screen to look like you'd tried to carve your initials into it, a screen protector was a wise investment.

Coming from several Palm and Pocket PC devices, the iPhone was my first capacitive touch screen device with a durable glass screen. Because of my history with those earlier devices, what was the first thing I did? Slap a good quality static cling screen protector on there! I wasn't going to take any chances!

Even if the glass screen of my Evo is scratch resistant, that is a far cry from scratch proof. It is just as easy to express disbelief that a phone which has been subject to abuse and carried in pocket with keys is not scratched as it is to express disbelief that a phone carried under the same circumstances is scratched. Everyone's different and everyone has a different level of OCD when it comes to their personal devices.

My point is, the screen protectors on the market today by companies like Seidio, Brando, SGP, Pocket PC Techs and others are all high quality products. It's hard to believe that a company that knows it's pulling the hood over your eyes would invest so much time to come up with high quality products if they didn't believe in them. It's up to the individual as to whether or not they want to install one. Me personally, I just put an SGP ultra crystal on and I love it. Great fit, feel, and I love that I don't have to baby the touch screen. Would it be fine without it? Probably. Do I want to take a chance on scratching the screen? No. Do I give up anything by having a screen protector on there? No. And I've tried several on the Evo already- Clarivue, Seidio, and SGP. They're all good, although slightly different in design, but made of high quality materials. As you can tell, I'm a little OCD on this subject, but that I also means I have a lot of experience with them on multiple devices- they are not BS.

FYI, I am not a paid employee of any of these companies. The opinions expressed above are mine and mine alone.
