Why Are You Not Upgrading To Or Buying The S20?

I spent enough money on the S10 I'm currently typing this response on. Does the S20 look sweet? Sure it does. But can I justify spending another $1K+ on a phone that's only marginally better for my needs than the phone I'm currently rocking on? Nope. Do I really need a 100Mpxl camera when I can't find anything that would show a better photo on it? 120Hz display? Not playing games on this phone, so 60Hz is fine for me right now. Oh, that unsightly dot where the selfie cam covers the top right of the screen? I've gotten used to it. Sorry Samsung. You're not getting my money this year.

Managed to talk myself out of getting the small S20. It's great they have bigger sensors, but a little disappointed Samsung make you go for the Ultra to get the bigger main camera. Going by the fov's listed on the specs and someone calculating the equivalents, the 'tele' lens is almost the same focal length as the wide (while the image may very well be clean at 3x, initially I believed it was 3x optical then digital up to 30x). Still undecided on Samsung's post processing of the images. 8K video having to use the 'tele' lens because of the MP count but having the crop in which I don't want.

I'm waning a smaller phone and hanging out for the rumored 5.4" iPhone, but was considering the S20 as I was wanting a change from iOS (have had 7 iPhones and 7 Androids) and it came in pink. But the phone as a whole didn't entice me enough. 120Hz is great, I've used high refresh rate monitors for a long time, can easily see the difference, but at the same time I don't really care if my phone has it or not.
Well consider this....they are not making you go for the Ultra to get the bigger camera. It is physically impossible to put the bigger camera in the smaller devices.

I'm not upgrading since: I just got an S10+ five months ago; there is no 5G where I live; and the S20 Ultra, which has the better camera, is too big for me.

Tempted to upgrade from my s10 to the s20+. Main reasons are larger screen, less screen curve, center punch, larger battery, otherwise, happy with my s10 performance and cameras. If I could get that stunning red s20+ with matching galaxy buds not available in the US I'd pull the trigger for sure. So leaning toward no.

Have you tried 120hz, or even 90hz on a phone though? You will have a very difficult time going back to 60hz.

Yeah I've played with the Ultra, it is very nice scrolling around, but it's not a make or break thing for me. Possibly using it for an extended time I would have a different opinion. On desktops I do not like moving windows or even my mouse around on a 60Hz screen.

I mean the main wide camera, not the super zoom periscope setup, which would not fit. But yes even the main camera may be restricted by physical constraints still.

I actually have reconsidered purely on the physical shape, I got my hands on the smaller S20 and even though it is slightly narrower than my iPhone X, together with the profile of the edge, it feels a lot smaller in hand. It makes me not want the possible 5.4" iPhone, because I can comfortably reach the opposite side while having a solid grip. Plus I get to keep a bigger screen and possibly higher specs, assuming the 5.4" phone will not be in their "Pro" line up. And it comes in pink.

I cancelled my pre-order, having played with a demo normal and plus and dummy ultra. My reasons are as follows:

- Price. Like size it keeps creeping up!
- Not a fan of the taller aspect ratio
- Camera doubts (Samsung smear and blur still seem to be present)
- Base storage/Price
- No secure face ID
- Compromised 120hz

Lastly my OnePlus 7 pro is a big reason too, unlike the exynos Samsungs I can get a working gcam which makes the camera pretty good and it still feels faster/slicker than those demo units I played with, 90 Hz at full resolution too.

Of course this means I am nailed on to have an ultra on launch day!

Today I walked into my carrier store in Australia and to my complete suprise, all 3 S20 Galaxy phones were on display. The store person told me they had just been out on display 20 mins before I came in.

Well, I went nuts playing around with camera on the S20 Ultra. And it certainly was impressive, from the detail of the 108 MP photos to the zoom capabilities. Holding it in person and comparing it my Note 9 I was surprised it's only a fraction taller than the Note 9 and the camera bump seems much less in person than you see on YouTube videos. By the time you put a good case like Spigen on it, it would make the whole back just about flush. So I was really surprised by this.

I was however also surprised that putting my Note 9 next to it, the display of the S20 Ultra seemed to be barely any larger than my Note 9. I kind of expected 6.9 vs 6.4 inch would seem a bit bigger than what it was.

For those who already have phones like the Note 9 and Note10+ and who are concerned about size and the camera bump I can honestly say don't be. It's a non issue.

I'm still on the fence and have decided that in 2 days when I have a day off I'll make my final decision whether to upgrade or not. But the camera was seriously impressive.

IMO it really is time for manufacturers to stop using the diagonal measurement to define screen size, it is misleading.

3 reasons, Price.. Price AND Price...
Also now it'll be good fun to watch Samsung drop prices because they are not selling as mad as they thought they would....

We dont have any sales figure to support the theory that they aren't selling and it's not going to drop until after the preorder period is over. We can't use the responses in this forum as a barometer for sales.

Of course we can't use the responses here only as a barometer and I wouldn't suggest that ever.
But price is getting a lot more mention all around this time and it not because of the the great deals offered :-)
But even if you just look at the responses from people on this forum that were normally on the pre-order wagon etc. Hype just isn't the same this time around.

We've seen drops in numbers the last few releases and there is no doubt that the price makes people squeamish. There is also no doubt in my mind prices will drop to mitigate slow sales if need be.
I also think we will see a boost once it gets out into the public arena if the camera shows it's true potential. Funny how the cameras have become so critical to move a product now that RAM has quadrupled in size.

I am keeping my s10+...thought about the upgrade but..not a big difference...no head phone jack..I'll wait another year when 5g is more available.

Price and the fact that my S10 plus is amazing and not convinced the ultra is a worthy upgrade at that price

But that doesn't mean I may not get it a little later on when the price drops lol

I find it better to upgrade every year the longer you keep your phone the less you get for trade in

IMO as phone is not an investment, it's something to be used and enjoyed, they will all lose value (obviously the more expensive the phone the more the loss) but it is what it is, we buy them because we either want to be on the top of the food chain or because certain features appeal to us. In my case, I pre-ordered the S20+ 5G not because I wanted to upgrade really but I recently sold my MacBook Pro and iPhone 11 Pro and want to get back to using Windows + Android so it was a non-brainer to pre-order it.
