Why can't my phone find the Bluetooth device

I had bought a Bluetooth noisehush N500 and just got it today. It turns on just fine but my phone can't find it. Is my phone not compatible or is this particular Bluetooth defective?

Make sure the device is in pairing mode and then go into your blue tooth settings and tell the phone to find the device. You must have the device in pairing mode first though.

As DougD84 said, the headset must be paired to the phone before using it, the procedure if relatively clearly defined in the manual linked above.
