Why do most people hate TouchWiz?

I think it?s ugly, I especially dislike the square icons, the general colour palette and the shade of blue used through the system. My problem with TouchWiz is purely aesthetic at this point. I haven?t used the latest version on the GS4 and company, but I think I may not like the excess of features. But I reserve judgement until actually using it. All this is just personal preference and we all have the right to that. I love the simplicity of stock Android (I have a Nexus 7), and looking very closely at what the Nexus 5 (should that be its name). There are people who think stock Android is too plain.

It?s all subjective.

My exact sentiments. I love the modern and clean look of my husband's nexus 7. Being able to change the grid and widget spacing was just a bonus. I LOVE Nova Launcher, it's perfect for what I was looking for.

Coming over from years of iOS use, I personally love TouchWiz so far. This is my first experience with it, been 2 days. Used Nexus 4 for a month a few months ago, and I personally found the vanilla Android to be bland(hoping I don't get flamed). TouchWiz is more intuitive and more flavorful IMO. But again, I am basing my thoughts on a very limited usage.

I like Touchwiz but the reason I stuck Nova Prime on my SGS2 and SGS3 was that there was too much wasted screen. I like a tighter grid pattern and Touchwiz couldn't accommodate me in that regard. I hear that TW on the Note 3 is better but still suffers from not being able to customise the grid size. However, although I have played about with my friend's Note 3, I have not used it in depth so I cannot verify that for certain.

Huh? What does childish mean? What does a hint of Motoblur mean? It's almost as if you've never actually owned these phones with these skins on them and are just repeating buzzwords from tech reviews... what exactly from each of them do you not like?

i've owned. motorola droid razr maxx hd, droid razr, htc thunderbolt, samsung galaxy 2/1, droid x, droid, lg optimus , htc hero, sony xperia c905, sony xperia 1, htc g1, so i guess i dont have experience with phones. by childish i mean the icons, animations, a lot of show and not much functionality. even though i disabled most of the features and animations, the apps still took a while to open. i've had the galaxy phones each for about 2 weeks and returned them.
the motoblur when it first came out, i did not like. i liked stock android, but until they removed most of the motoblur on the newer phones, the devices acted more like stock and actually were useful. and did not slow the phone's true capabilities to be a smart phone.
lg always seemed to make it look like samsung's touchwiz, and motoblur. mixed together. if you find a way to mirror two devices on a tv example: lg optimus and a galaxy s3. most average people will say they are both galaxy phones.
i've had different home screens installed and after a while the updates on them make them useless. ive rooted a few of them to make them stock and they work great.
what i like about the phones are simple easy to use, quick access to features. the note 3 kinda has these features, but i am willing to try it out and see how i like, or dont like about it. it has abit of a learning curve, but from what i have seen personally in a store, it works smoothly and efficient. i can access what i want, when i want. the camera is basic. the note taking is quick. i can multi task easier. the settings are easier to get to.

the phones i listed are only the android phones i've had. i've used others from family member, friends, stores. and ive had other dumb phones from my first nokia 3390 (damn i loved that phone) sidekicks, other qwerty phones from nokia and motorola. music phones. premium camera phones. not asmuch as other people, maybe you have had more experience with more phones than me and know more, thats great. congrats.

edit, i also have had iphones(4,3gs,and original) windows phones(8,7,6.1) symbian(these were awesome for their time),

I really like the GUI on the new Moto X and Droid Maxx more than TouchWiz (tw). The Motorola GUI is crisp, clean and definitely performance driven. TW always seamed to slow things down to simply add some bells and whistle tricks. I wish i could run Motorola software on Samsung hardware. The Note 3 hardware is able to speed things up so most users will no longer notice the weight of TW. Props to Samsung for making this adjustment.

This is what i am noticing, but maybe the guts have some thing to do with it? but the xony xperia z is laggy, and it has the same processor. so, what ever they did to the note 3, lets hope it continue.

I'm not saying you're wrong, it's your opinion. Just back it up with something other than "it's childish and laggy", which you've done in your second post. To be fair, all of your experiences sans the Moto Droid Razr are with much older iterations of their respective overlays. Touchwiz is in no way laggy or slow on my Galaxy, so when people complain about such things I typically think PEBKAC. Again, I'm not attacking you, I'm just saying that some people say "Touchwiz sucks" or "stock Android or GTFO", and don't provide a single detail to back it up.

Oh OK my bad. At least I hope I explained myself a little. I've used my brother's s4 and seems to work smoothly, compared to the previous galaxy phones. but the note 3 looks like a good contender.

This is exactly what Apple has done with the FOSS used in OSX and iOS. The difference is that Samsung usually makes changes that perform worse than the original. Messaging client, Gallery and Android Beam come to mind.

They need to stop worrying about bullet-points on a features list, and get what they have working well. Instead, they seem focused on releasing as many different models and different versions of the software as they can. This is a partial list of their devices from the last 12 months. There is no group of software engineers on the planet who can keep all of this in check. When you look at your Note 3 or S4, realize that THIS is where all the software engineering is going, and phones like the Mega or Duos Grand are absolutely horrible because nobody is working on making them better.

Samsung is Android for all intents and purposes. I want better from them.

I agree. For every "that's pretty useful" feature they have, they have 3 "who cares?" features that are poorly implemented. At the same time, I can look at Google and say the same thing with some of their apps. I love Google All Access Music, it's probably the best music service for my needs. The application and widget are such steaming piles of crap that it shocks me that this is the best that Google can do given the manpower and knowledge they possess. I look at the latest iteration of Maps Mobile and say the same thing, really Google? I think we deserve better from Google AND Samsung.

I honestly don't find any problems with it... Not sure if it's because I am more of a samsung person than anything else, But can someone who dislikes Touchwiz tell me why you dislike it?

I don't think anyone here is in the position to start dishing out business advice to Samsung based on their quarterly numbers. Their features (or gimmicks) made Galaxy a household name. I see way more Galaxies out more than iPhones now. The stock Android purists are only a small minority, but even then Samsung threw them a bone with the Google edition S4.

I like touchwiz. Didn't bother me on the S2 or my Note 2. I was hesitant to get a S2 because of the reviewers disdain for touchwiz, but i'm glad i actually made the jump. I don't see how Samsung made the some Android features worse and actually the Gallery and the messaging app works way better than stock on my Note 2. Don't really just beam enough to even care.

If all Android OEMs were to go strictly stock, there would be no way to differentiate phones outside of physical design. They all use the same hardware and by default they would be using the same software. Not much for diversity. You could just toss them in a hat and pick one, so I'm glad the the OEMs are trying to bring a different experience with their software. Really is there any difference between the Google Editon S4 or HTC One besides design? For those that want stock...just get a Nexus or the Google editions, but don't cry about touchwiz or sense. They most definitely serve a purpose.

And as far lag, it affect all phones. Not just touchwiz phones. People are making it out to be more serious than it actually is just for the sake of an argument. For the record, I've seen Nexus 4 lag, Nexus 10 Lag and (oh my stars) IOS6 lag. In IOS7 lag is just a feature now...

For me it's two things. 1. Failure to adopt many standards set in ICS (UI, buttons, menu keys, etc) and 2. an uneven application of UI cues that seem to remain mostly unchanged from Gingerbread.

The reasons for them NOT modernizing their UI are obvious... brand recognition. You can tell a phone is a Galaxy phone from across the room (or an LG Optimus Pro, that one's kinda hard to ID) based on the form factor and UI.

As the leading OEM (in sales) for Android, Samsung has an opportunity to be an amazing contributor to the advancement of Android design, and they're not doing it.

Actually, a third thing is 3. Tying their features to their UI. TouchWiz shouldn't be necessary to run S-notes, s-beam, s-whatever. As pointed out above, the majority of those apps are redundant and inferior to the apps that they emulate, but the really useful ones could easily be coded to work on a much closer to stock UI.

All that extra effort spent redesigning an entire OS and replicating functionality from existing services could easily be spent focusing on a few, killer features that add to the experience, and an approach like this would reduce the delta between receiving an Android update from Google and Samsung having something workable to send for testing by nearly 100%.

Any UI modifications they HAVE to make can easily be done in the form of a launcher. That's how LG did it in the Eclair/Froyo days, and Moto's approach to software is being rewarded with the highest praise this year.

I'm not sure anyone has said that everything should run stock. That would be very boring. The complaints about TouchWiz are not that they're are not stock, but the about disjointedness. Are you saying that if your Note 3 arrived with 100% of the features/functionality, but a better UI that you'd be upset?

After reading literally dozens of these threads (they've been in these forums since at least 2010, and the arguments don't change much except for stock becoming much more popular post ICS), the general theme is that everyone wants things to remain open and to have a variety. Wanting that variety and wanting to see improvements are not mutually exclusive. Stock isn't the measuring stick that everything has to live up to (at least it shouldn't be), I think of it as a minimum standard. But that means 4.3 is the minimum standard, not 2.3.

Razr Maxx guy here! waiting on My Verizon Galaxy Note 3....(been a few years since I owned a samsung...hmm I wonder why??)

Paid a visit to Best Buy to see my new toy...slightly larger than razr maxx....6' 3..large hands.

User experience should be the top concern for Samsung, but the people who make those decisions are looking at numbers and pushing their teams to the limit. I am a novice in the cell phone subject matter....I can and do read, sometimes I even understand what I read!...

I believe Samsung makes the mistake as was stated previously of trying too hard to customize existing ideas to make them "Samsung" ideas. The Execs push for numbers, their concern (correctly) is the majority experience.

I like live wall paper and folders...clutter on my desktop or cell phone is annoying to me. I am sure I will like most of the touch wiz features and curse at how stupid some things have to be accomplished.

Do I or anyone else on this forum know more than the phone manufacturers? NO...But it is up to us to let them know what works and what they can do better. They CAN do better. If we do not ask for better quality products they will gladly sell average overpriced products to the general public.

I think he was just looking at overall sales numbers. I imagine it would have been difficult for him to check at your school before posting.
