Why does my LG G3 screen flicker and fades to darkness?

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

I just called LG and, according the rep I spoke with, this is primarily a software issue. Judging by the bulk of this thread, my experience with my G3, and intuition, it is primarily a hardware issue in my eyes. However, this issue seems to usually be initiated by software changes.

What sort of software changes do you mean? I can definitively rule out firmware changes, because my phone is rooted and the device will not accept firmware updates.

I wouldn't say exclusively software changes, but often with Android updates, this seems to occur.

A crazy solution I found is putting my phone in the freezer for 15-20 minutes. I did it, and I have not had any problems since (~6 hours). Short-term solution?

I won't hold my breath on any "fix" that lasts under a week. Custom ROM seemed to give me the best results at first but I'm back to square one... Holding out hope for a permanent fix outside of actually replacing hardware

Is there any sort of benchmarks i can set to run on loop? I have used antutu since baking and its been fine but ideally would like to allow it to run for a few hours constantly.

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

Today I baked the motherboard in the oven. 300F for 8 minutes.

Could have used a sprinkle of salt and pepper, possibly a dash of garlic powder. And I think I chipped my tooth on the CPU....

Kidding of course. I did bake it and it powered up beautifully, I couldn't even get that previously. Thinking I'll run it at work tomorrow and pack my S4 along just in case.

Now you're just being silly.

Everybody knows mobo goes best with lemon juice!

Dang, so that's what I did wrong! I couldn't figure it out!!

So far so good at least ... Hoping it lasts, but I'll keep you posted

Hi
I've had the same exact issue, i though it was the screen..

i love the body to screen ratio and the thin bazels of this phone that are nowhere else to be found. g4 is ugly as f.. and g5 isn't that beautiful either. i thought i'd wait few more years, before buying another phone but screen flickering made me consider to get another smartphone.. and than. as strange as it may get.. the little paper thing brought my g3 back to life.. so strange.

i can not resist to ask the question to the inevntor of the trick.. i mean how on earth?! :D what brought you to the idea to open things up and stick a piece of paper there, exactly there..

anyway works like a charm for few days already

Ok, I figured I had nothing to loose so I baked my board too. 9 minutes at 325F. I also cut and folded up aluminum foil to fill the gap between the processor and aluminum chassis. I then applied thermal paste to the processor and aluminum chassis and "sandwiched" the aluminum foil in between. Phone is working flawlessly now! I didnt want to add alot of thermal paste to fill the gap because I know that can trap heat. So folding aluminum foil and using paste on both sides transfers the heat to the chassis. I'll update in a couple days but so far the reflowing in the oven seem to be working. Time will tell.foil resize.jpgrecessed processor resize.jpg

Just started experiencing this last week. Sent mine in to LG USA for repair. It's out of warranty. Here's what the diagnostic results said:

Symptom/Cause: Main Display-Line/Segment. Out of Warranty by Date code, LCD (LCD, connector, cable) problem

I called LG, informed the rep it was the motherboard, but the rep couldn't tell me anything beyond what was written by the technician. She claimed the technician was not taking calls and she couldn't send the tech a link to this thread. As we've discovered, it's definitely not the LCD. It's the motherboard.

Regardless, was $153 for a full refurb, so that should cover the mobo. Comes with a 90 day warranty, so if the problem persists, back to LG it goes.

Hope the rest of you have better luck with LG.

Smart move using the aluminum foil. I just added some more thermal paste (I had a "hole" in my coverage, so I filled that in)

Speaking of holes, I put a hole in the upper housing next to the power button, just as one more way to help bleed excess heat. My post below has a link to the pictures (Google Photos). At this point I'm thinking Samsung was smart to include liquid cooling on the Galaxy S7!

Joining the tinfoil brigade myself. I baked 9 min at 325, and used aluminum foil + Arctic Silver to fill the gap. I will, of course, keep you all posted.

EDIT: Not sure if it matters really, but I baked it CPU side up.

Hi all,

Here's my experience: Got my D855 through Carphone Warehouse in September 2014, after returning a 5 month old Sony Xperia Z2 due to major overheating issues (admittedly I was using it in Afghanistan ~50c!). So, my phone is only 17/18 months old. I've never messed about with ROMS on this phone, something I always had to do with other Android phones to get the best out of them. I love this phone, when it works.

The phone had previously been back to LG to replace the entire front, due to cracking across the mic hole and IR blaster, a known issue for which LG will repair regardless of warranty, (something the rest of you may use as an excuse to get the screen replaced, to see if it fixes this issue). All has been well for a couple of months since, until one morning the other week when I took my phone off charge in the morning and the screen almost immediately did a funny fade to black, like in this video I uploaded to YouTube: (It's video yXwL5KvS06o, I can't post links here)

As an IT Coordinator by trade, I did a bit of troubleshooting myself, which included the step of trying to factory reset the phone from the recovery menu, where the phone still did the fade to black thing. This leads me to believe that it is not a software problem, as the OS hasn't even thought about booting at this stage. Please, correct me if I'm wrong on this.

So, I got in touch with LG support through their very useful chat feature, where I chatted to a nice young chap who agreed to bring it in for repair. He told me DPD would be in touch to arrange a collection. Well, you can imagine my surprise when a DPD chap turned out completely out of the blue. Fortunately, I had the phone ready for collection anyway, so off it went.

I waited around a week to here anything, when I received an email from an LG address, in Polish. Bit of Google Translate action ensued, and it was apparent that my phone had been sent to another department. No explanation of why, or what this department did, just a random acronym.

I let a couple more days go by and rang them. A lovely lady was very helpful and told me my phone had been released for depatch and I would hear from DPD to arrange delivery. Guess what? Nothing from DPD until a fella turned up with it. Fortunately, I was in the house at the time. So I open it up to find the attached letter saying they hadn't fixed it as it had water damage. Well, it never had water damage when I sent it to them, so I have no idea where that's come from. They also included a photo of some random electronic component, with some arrows and stuff on it, none of which means anything to me as a non-electronics engineer.

So, as suggested on the letter I called their out of warranty call cenre to explain to them my experience. Well, I may as well have rang the speaking clock for all the good it did me. I was empathised with about the DPD debacle, told I should've been contacted before the device was returned to explain what was wrong, and that someone will call me regarding my claim there couldn't be water damage.

2 weeks later, I'm still waiting for that call.

You should all do what I did, and just drop it in the nearest bin and get on with living an LG-free life. I'll never buy another one of their products, based on the shocking customer support I've experienced. I was really looking forward to the V10 coming out in the UK, but they pi$$ed us about with that one, then the G5 is announced with gimmicky slot in gubbins. No thanks LG, I'm off back to Samsung with the S7 Edge.

Good luck everyone,

BS...

Re: HELP - LG G3 Screen Flickers and fades to darkness

Update: this morning my G3 began to flicker again. Last weekend I baked the motherboard (300F for 8 minutes) and it worked for 5 days. Maybe I didn't bake it long enough or hot enough. I'll try again this weekend if I hope. Perhaps a bit hotter and longer will do the trick.

Or you'll burn everything up lol.

Update on mine: It faded a few times but the rom i was using kept having issues so I formatted everything and installed CM13 and haven't had an issue since. Can't imagine it's related at all but interesting none the less.
