Why does my Moto X 2014 battery go from 20 to nothing?

Re: Moto X 2014 battery goes from 20% to nothing

I get this at 40%, it's bad enough the battery became crap over the last two years but now this makes it worse

"Battery dies at [INSERT NUMBER GREATER THAN 0]%" means the battery is dying.

There are three possible solutions:

1. Get an external battery case for the phone so you aren't dependent on the internal battery. Adds weight.
2. Replace the battery: (not easy on the X2014, sadly) https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Motorola+Moto+X+2nd+Generation+Battery+Replacement/40717
3. Replace the phone (what I did - I loved my Moto X but I've been rocking a Note 4 for a while now). There are plenty of fairly equivalent phones in the used market with batteries that can be replaced - though many manufacturers are going with sealed batteries in their new models. :'(

This is untrue. It's a software issue, not a hardware issue.

While I'm no longer using my moto x, when the battery would suddenly crap out at 8, 12, 15 or 20%, I could immediately put it on a charger, unplug it, and the given percentage will be useful right down to 0%. There's battery life stored in the battery, the device is just powering off for no reason.

Was having this issue. Luckily my upgrade time was up and I got a Z Force. Best was nearly 5 hours of sot. 30 hours of battery.

I have the same issue, dying at 20%, but if I turn it back on I can get forty minutes of browsing and thirty minutes locked (displaying 2-3%) before it is completely drained. I have just factory booted it and it still happens.

Re: Moto X 2014 battery goes from 20% to nothing

Mine died at 34% yesterday!!! This is getting ridiculous and is getting worse and worse. Started off dying at 5%, then 15%, then 20% and so on. 34% is taking the ****. Now I basically only realistically have two thirds of an already mediocre battery available. Upgrade needed ASAP

I've been having problems too for the last few months. Here's a typical example of how the battery nosedives from over 30% to nothing in no time at all.

Sometimes I'll pick the phone up and find it's dead; other times I'll actually be using it and it will just die on me. Yesterday it did that and every time I rebooted it, it just died again until I was able to get to a charger, even though the battery had previously been reported at over 30%.

It would be good to know whether it is the battery or the software. I wouldn't mind having a go at changing the battery, but I don't want to spend a lot of time and worry over it if it doesn't solve anything.

Incidentally, I reported this in a thread on Motorola's forums. It seems I'm far from the only one with these problems. One of Motorola's staff suggested that I needed to do a factory reset, but that didn't achieve anything other than waste an evening setting the phone up again.

Yeah, this is a well known issue. I personally suspect it's a software issue. I got a Moto Z Play two weeks ago, so now I have insane battery life! It feels so liberating after having to put up with the faltering Moto X battery that I had. I sympathise with your current situation.
