Why has my facebook messenger app stopped working?

Why has my facebook messenger app stopped working? I cannot open it either. Tried unistalling then install it again but it still won't work. Is there a way this can be fixed?

Welcome to Android Central! Have you also updated the main Facebook app? Try also going to Settings>Apps, select both Facebook and Facebook Messenger, and Clear Cache/Clear Data.
